If you want to abolish war, you must eliminate its causes. What is needed is to restrict government activities to the preservation of life, health, and private property, and thereby to safeguard the working of the market. Sovereignty must not be used for inflicting harm on anyone, whether citizen or foreigner.

In my view, it is the restriction of government that has caused this latest disastrous war. After almost 30 years of “deregulation” it was claimed would “safeguard the working of the market” what we have are out of control transnational corporations corrupting our political system with huge campaign contributions to the dem and repub celebdidates.
The difficulty with libertarian ideals is that in the effort to restrict the powers of government, they remove checks on the economic powerhouses that can act just as badly and stupidly as government. The question we should be asking in not whether we should limit the market, but by how much it should be limited. No one in their right mind would argue that nuclear weapons should be freely bought and sold and that the marketplace is equipped to handle such issues as would be raised by such commerce.
I argue that government regulation of things like corporate pollution in fact falls under it’s libertarian ideal granted power to act on “the preservation of life, health, and private property.” As bad as unbridled government power is, unbridled corporate power is just as bad. A balance must be struck.
