Georgia is on my mind

Georgia is on my mind, no not our southern state. The former Soviet state has been invaded, and American Special Operations personnel are in that nation. They just might be trading fire with the Russians as you read this.

Do we, as in the United States really want to throw down with Russia?

Sad to say, it makes one hell of a lot more sense than this Iraq adventure does. But? We are bogged down in Iraq, and the Taliban are staging a resurgence in Afghanistan. Is that Putin’s thinking? That he can just swarm over a smaller and weaker opponent and take the place as spoils of war?

This could easily lead to a World War…

Do you actually think before you write? Putin doesn’t have control of the Army (technically) because he’s the Prime Minister now. And Russia isn’t swarming over anyone. They had peacekeeping forces in South Ossetia to help preserve the separatist state’s western-style government and to keep Georgia from taking it over. So I hate to disappoint you, but there’s not going to be a “throw down with Russia.” And as for the special forces personnel you mentioned, that’s not true. We have military contractors and consultants in South Ossetia teaching and improving the Russian peacekeeping troops. We don’t have any actual fighting forces in the region. Why don’t you do your research next time.

SE you too go off into the proverbial woods you claim Mr P is lost in.
It is roundly accepted that Putin has much play with Medvedev.
Russia has tanks and personnel and now jets actively killing people. Russia supports the seperatist movement of South Ossetia from Georgia. Does and always has. Do you really believe the nation that so greatly and gravely fights Chechnya has any right to disrespect a sovereign nations internal struggles. South Ossetia is Georgia.
Throw down ? Well many pundits are playing the what if card. Like what if Georgia had been admitted to NATO. Follow the line of thinking from there on both sides.
Special forces troops are likely the military component of the 130 US personnel involved in preparing Georgian troops for Iraq.
When people pose a question or in this case ponder out loud over the net they deserve their rights. SE relax and ponder the posts questions and offer something other than a personal attack. WTF you a Russian ?

GORI, Georgia – Russia sent hundreds of tanks and troops into the separatist province of South Ossetia and bombed Georgian towns Saturday in a major escalation of the conflict that has left scores of civilians dead and wounded.

If S.E. did actually know anything about American Spec Ops, the numbers that he quotes should be a dead give away. Putin, the former KGB stud, has hardly turned over any power in reality. He is pulling the strings that his various puppets are hanging from. Personally I would let the secessionist go hook up with Russia as is their apparent want. Then go on about my merry way.

Is Georgia one of the places that we wanted to set up defence missiles in? I can’t comment much about whats going on over there as I have never kept up with what Russia was doing there! All I hope is that during this conflict that at least the civilians in both areas stay safe!

It does seem that all the countries across the pond is iching for a fight among each other..but is that anything new?

Interesting post patricksperry, try and keep us informed.

I would like to point out Russia’s presence in South Ossetia is hardly there with just good intents. When the Soviet Union broke up Russia’s way of maintaining influence and access to resources in former satellite states was to support little break away Republics just like South Ossetia. Without Russia’s military backing, South Ossetia would have never been capable of an armed rebellion and would have been peacefully integrated into Georgia back in the 90’s.

Russian interference in it’s former satellites is appalling and precisely why the world refused to recognize South Ossetia in the first place. Is it ok for the USA to allow Russia to use its power to undermine the foundations of neighbor states?

With that said, even if we weren’t bogged down in two wars I don’t believe we’d go to war with Russia over Georgia. This is one decision the US is quite happy to let the Security Council and the UN play a moral smokescreen for their actions. Also, do you realize what would happen to global energy markets if the US and Russia went to war? With the caucuses up in arms and Russia turning off its pipelines the energy markets would freak, making that a more expensive war than we’d ever get comfortable with, hence why georgia’s strategic influence is less than maintaining peace with Russia.

I mean hell, did we “go to war” when Russian invaded Hungary, Czechoslovakia or Afghanistan?

At this point in time Russia supplies most of the natural gas, and petroleum to Europe from what I have read. Hence, I don’t see the Europeans doing much more than verbal condemnation. Another wordpress blogger is all over this. Apparently she is there, or from there so I will defer to her for updates about this etc. She does apparently see things from the Russian point of view for the most part.
