Bumper Sticker Politics and the First Amendment

The first salvo against the right to free expression was recently fired in Oklahoma of all places. Although this worked out it never should have happened in the first place.

The police officers who stopped Oklahoma City motorist Chip Harrison and confiscated a sign from his car told him he has a right to his beliefs, but the Secret Service “could construe this as a threat against President Obama,” according to the incident report released this morning.

    Actually, I have to agree, the abortion reference was a veiled death threat, an indirect threat, and even though I hope and pray that the kneegrow falls dead from a sudden coronary I know not to say some stupid shit that references KILLING him…

    It is indeed stupid to give the abortion reference, I fully agree, but it’s still understood that it’s in jest. It’s understood that two senses of ‘abort’ are being used, one to mean the impeachment of Obama, another to mean the premature termination of pregnancy.
