In another chapter in the ongoing attempt to blame the American gun community for Mexico’s internal strife, CBS News reports that the Mexican government has retained the New York City-based law firm of Reid Collins & Tsai to examine its options for suing U.S. gun manufacturers and distributors. This report describes Mexico’s actions as a “novel approach,” in reality, such lawsuits have been used for decades as a tactic by anti-gun groups and governments in their attempts to bankrupt gun manufacturers and circumvent the political process.
That’s why Congress passed the “Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act” in 2005. This act protects firearms manufacturers, distributors, dealers and importers from suits brought about as a result of “the harm solely caused by the criminal or unlawful misuse of firearm products or ammunition products by others when the product functioned as designed and intended.” The outlook for a Mexican government suit looks dim; since the PLCAA was signed into law by President George W. Bush on Oct. 26, 2005, no federal court has allowed such a suit by a government plaintiff to go forward against a U.S. firearms manufacturer.

The actual reason for the violence in Mexico (30,000 early graves in last five years) is twofold: rich urban Americans who have a bad habit of indulging in illegal drugs and who have deep pockets, on the one hand, and the Mexicans who decide to engage in a bloody competition with other Mexicans to supply those American druggies-with-deep-pockets. $60 billion a year gets one’s attention and is reason enough for a lot of bang-bang-bang. But we’re beautiful and we’re filthy rich. American gun manufacturers? Don’t think so, sports fans.

Just one of many reasons why I oppose the “war on drugs” Tony. Turning thugs into millionaires? (Shakes my head.)
Aside from that. When was the last time you heard “Attention Wal Mart shoppers, today’s special in sporting goods are full auto AK 47’s and fragmentation grenades, and don’t forget to pick up you’re very own RPG while they last!”
What next..? The hoplophobic’s screaming that C4 is selling like hot cakes at your local pharmacy..?

I have an error to confess in my comment: I should have said 30,000 early graves in last 15 years, not just last 5. my bad (puts “m” in lower case).
Codevilla has an good article on our border problems in the Claremont Review of Books, but the article is not yet available on their website, claremont.org. But he basically argues against the militarization of the border since that will only keep out the pacos that just want to work for Gallo wine or Dole or Subway sandwiches — the Nobodies, in other words. The Somebodies with the drug product to sell will still get their stuff through to El Norte.
