San Francisco Proposes New Gun Control Measures

(CBS 5) SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom hailed new proposed city gun legislation, and he did it Wednesday from the neighborhood most plagued by gun violence.

“Enough is enough,” said Newsom in the city’s Bayview district. “We need common sense gun control.”

The announcement came nearly one year after a judge struck down a law banning handgun possession in the city.

One part of the measure outlaws the possession or sale of guns on any city-owned property, expanding the current ban from buildings like City Hall and schools to include outdoor locations like city parks.

Mayor Newsom said he also hopes to extend the ban to public housing complexes, but federal laws may make that complicated.

The proposed legislation would also require people who commit crimes with guns to sign up with the police department, then probation officers could keep better tabs on them.

Another aspect would require all gun owners to store their guns disabled with a trigger lock or placed in a locked-box. Authorities said lock boxes would help to keep legal guns from being stolen and then later used illegally.

“It is fair to say that a majority of gun crime is committed with illegal guns,” District Attorney Kamala Harris said. “It’s a reality that a lot of weapons and guns that we find in connection with a homicide are stolen.”

The idea, she contends, is to remind legal gun owners how to behave.

“Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn’t mean that we’re not going to walk into that home and check to see if you’re being responsible and safe in the way that you conduct your affairs,” Harris said.

San Francisco’s only gun shop is also a target of the proposed legislation, which would require it and any future gun shops in the city to send police officials a gun sales list every six months.

Even though criminals already don’t follow the law, city leaders believe any gun crackdown makes the city safer.

“It’s just time and it’s the right thing to do,” said Harris, citing existing laws in Alameda and Los Angeles counties that are similar to the proposed ones for San Francisco.

John Dingell (D-MI) continues his assault on Americangun owners. Dingell has been tapped by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to broker acompromise with Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) on H.R. 297, a gun controlbill being pushed in the wake of the Virginia Tech shooting. The bill provides about $1 billion to the states to “provide theNational Instant Criminal Background Check System [NICS] with allrecords concerning persons who are prohibited from possessing orreceiving a firearm… regardless of the elapsed time since thedisqualifying event.” As GOA has pointed out in previous alerts, this could lead tomillions more Americans being included in the FBI’s database ofprohibited persons. Dingell, being a former NRA board member, is in a unique position inthe Congress on Second Amendment issues. Despite the fact that hebetrayed gun owners by supporting the Clinton semi-auto ban, he isstill viewed on the Hill as one of the few pro-gun Democrats. So his support gives the bill the appearance of having the support ofgun owners, when actually it is the most massive expansion of guncontrol in over a decade. McCarthy, of course, is the most notorious anti-gunner in theCongress. Her sitting down with Dingell to decide the fate of ourgun rights is like two foxes deciding how to best guard the henhouse. To make matters worse, Dingell is in negotiations with the NRA tocome up with a ‘compromise’ as quickly as possible. The NRA itself told Newsweek in an exclusive interview on April 24that the group “backs [the] proposed new legislation” in the House. Newsweek reported, “The NRA’s position puts the group at odds withthe Gun Owners of America, which has already launched a publiccampaign to block the legislation that the NRA supports, warning thatthe proposal could ‘block millions of additional, honest gun ownersfrom buying firearms.'” Politicians always seek to pass laws in the aftermath of a tragedy,as if one more law will stop evil people from doing evil deeds.Instead of passing more and more laws that ultimately will snuff outour liberty, we should consider repealing gun control laws thatprevent citizens from defending themselves when a madman strikes. Taking aim at guns

Last week, we reported on a new Virginia law which prohibits exactly the kind of sting operation run by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who blames guns from Virginia for crime in New York City. At first, the Mayor appeared ready to buck the law in Virginia, but now it appears he will abide by it. That hasn’t stopped a gun-rights group, The Virginia Citizens Defense League, from holding the “Bloomberg Gun Giveaway” in Annandale, Virginia—two free guns were awarded in a gathering to thumb noses at Mayor Bloomberg.

In Illinois, the state senate passed a bill this week that would ban the sale or ownership of gun magazines that hold more than ten rounds. Thomas Mannard, executive director of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence said, “This is a significant step in our efforts to reduce the lethality of firearms sold in Illinois and reduce the risk that weapons that can accept high-capacity ammunition magazines pose to Illinois communities.” Apparently, it’s that 11th round that is the really dangerous one. Oh, and one can buy such magazines in all surrounding states.

An apparent Texas-size quandary has arisen in the Lone Star State regarding the possession of firearms on private property. A state senate bill would allow concealed-handgun carriers to keep guns in their cars on business owners’ lots. Gov. Rick Perry said, “I think it makes sense for Texans to be able to protect themselves from deranged individuals, whether they’re in church, or whether on a college campus or wherever they are.” However, some Republicans are squeamish about the idea of telling property owners that they can’t determine who or what comes on their property. Then again, criminals are not concerned with committing violent crime on private property. The “guns are scary” mentality is the reason potential victims are the only people being disarmed.

This is the time of year when wildlife give birth to their young. The Colorado Division of Wildlife advises people not to approach, touch or handle young animals.

“We know that people are trying to be helpful, but young animals are best cared for by their own parents,” said Tony Gurzick, southwest assistant regional manager for the DOW. “The best thing people can do is to leave young wildlife alone.”

During spring and early summer, people often see young animals that appear to be alone in the forest, in backyards or along the sides of roads.

“The animals have not been abandoned. Young animals are often left alone to allow the mother to feed, to help them avoid predators and to learn how to live in the wild,” Gurzick explained.

Deer provide a good example of how wildlife adapts behaviors to help them survive. Young fawns have no scent and are born with speckled coats that provide a natural camouflage. These two factors help them avoid being found by predators. When the mother doe senses a predator might be near it moves away from its young. Many other animals use similar techniques.

Young birds often fall out of their nests or are pushed out of nests by parents to encourage them to fly, explained Chad Morgan, a district wildlife manager in the Greeley area. Young birds should not be touched. An exception can be made if a bird can be placed quickly back into its nest. But the nest must be easily accessible, Morgan said.

“If a young bird is on the ground it will quickly learn to fly,” Morgan said. “It’s best to let nature take its course.”

People also need to keep their pets under control. In the woods, dogs–acting on their natural predator instincts-can find animals and attack them. The stress of being attacked often is fatal for young animals unable to defend themselves.

In neighborhoods and backyards cats are adept at finding eggs and young birds. Cats are pets–but they’re also predators.
Many studies show that cats are damaging the songbird population. The DOW asks that people not allow their cats to roam free.

Except for what’s put in birdfeeders, people should not provide any type of food for wildlife. Providing food causes animals to bunch up in small areas which can make them vulnerable to diseases and predation. If animals become accustomed to being fed in one area they will act aggressively to protect the food source and that can pose a danger to humans and pets. Wild animals also should not eat pet food or human food.

People also need to know that not all newborn animals will survive.
“In the case of all wildlife, we have to understand that mortality is part of the natural cycle,” Gurzick said.

If you see a young animal, admire its beauty from a distance and then move on quietly. Talk to youngsters and others about this topic who might not be familiar with wildlife.

There are times when one must simply admire the courage and unadulterated Valor of our children. This young man saved so many American lives that, if it were in the early days of World War Two he would have been sent home to raise money and awareness of the foe that we faced.

Many serve (much too few) and all are to be admired. Yet? Among them, a cream arises. American Warriors. No better friends, and no worse enemies.

Lance Cpl. Christopher Adlesperger now guards the gates of heaven. Have a beer with Chesty.

Profiles of valor: Lance Cpl. Adlesperger
Lance Cpl. Christopher Adlesperger of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was on a “clearing mission” in Fallujah with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, when he and his team encountered heavy enemy fire. His point man was killed and two other Marines were injured. Despite shrapnel wounds, Adlesperger advanced the attack against the jihadis, while single-handedly clearing the stairs and moving the wounded to safety. According to the citation on his award, “On his own initiative, while deliberately exposing himself to heavy enemy fire…[Adlesperger] established a series of firing positions and attacked the enemy, forcing them to be destroyed in place or to move into an area where adjacent forces could engage them.”

A month after the Fallujah battle, the 20-year-old Adlesperger was on another clearing mission when he was killed by enemy gunfire.

For his courageous actions in Fallujah, Adlesperger was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross, the second highest military medal for combat valor. His family was presented with the medal at a recent award ceremony. Adlesperger’s actions “destroyed the last strongpoint in the Jolan District of Al Fallujah and saved the lives of his fellow Marines…” the citation states. “By his outstanding display of decisive leadership, unlimited courage in the face of heavy enemy fire and utmost devotion to duty… Adlesperger reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”

Patriots, please pray for the family of Lance Cpl. Adlesperger.

Old Dead White Men

All to often, the phrase “Just a bunch of Old Dead White Men” enters into the political and historic debate. It often takes the form of  the concept of the “Living Constitution.” Which is something that I simply detest. The Constitution simply never died. It’s DNA never has changed, only the meaning has been changed to suit to people of the times. In direct confrontation of the principles enshrined within the founding documents. Be that reading something into those writings, or saying that the founders never foresaw what happens in this day and or age.

Well guess what? Those old men were a lot brighter than most people give them credit for. The ideology of liberty and freedom always remains the same. Our friends over at “The Patriot Post” have once again blazed a trail in understanding just what thought went into making the final drafts. Specifically they have updated the Federalist Papers. The originals are also available for side by side comparison.
