Climate Change This Week: Gore Comes Out of Winter Hibernation

March 5, 2010

In the wake of the recent irrefutable counterattack on climate change “science,” one would think that those who have forecasted the end of civilization would be running for the hills, or — at the very least — quietly dropping their phony claims and stepping aside in light of, well, the inconvenient truth. But leave it to Al Gore to make even more excuses for years of incompetence and dishonesty, and leave it to the New York Times to provide him a platform from which to pontificate.

And pontificate he did, in a weekend op-ed worthy of Michael Moore in terms of pure, unadulterated horse pucky. The former vice president once again wailed that we will face an “unimaginable calamity requiring large-scale, preventive measures to protect human civilization as we know it.” He should just come clean and tell us what he really means: redistributing the wealth, from our pockets to his.

Gore also valiantly defended those of his brethren exposed in the Climategate scandal, referring to the UK’s University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit e-mails as “stolen.” (As if that somehow justifies the corrupt content therein.) He further claimed the abused scientists involved had succumbed to the pressure of climate skeptics, blatantly ignoring that for years other scientists who questioned climate change found themselves either silenced or blacklisted.

He even went so far as to blame the U.S. Senate, by way of stalling the Obama administration’s cap-n-tax scheme, for other world leaders’ lack of commitment at the Copenhagen Summit. China, Gore confides conspiratorially, was really gung-ho about limiting its carbon emissions until the big, bad U.S. decided to take the low road.

The government Gore and others like him envision is a danger to our Essential Liberty. Preserving a government that encourages both a free market and free thinkers can mean not only the difference between prosperity and ruin, but literally between life and death. We need only to compare the recent earthquakes in Chile and Haiti to tell us this. The earthquake in Chile registered 8.8 on the Richter Scale, which was hundreds of times more powerful than the one that struck Haiti, but due in part to Chile’s superior infrastructure and wealth, only 708 people were killed, as opposed to more than 220,000 in the third-world Caribbean nation. Thankfully, more people are starting to realize that we cannot take our prosperity and our way of life for granted, and that includes vigorously confronting opportunistic charlatans like Al Gore.

In related news, the University of Tennessee is giving Gore an honorary doctoral degree because, gushed Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek, “his work has quite literally changed our planet for the better.” Both the publisher and managing editor of The Patriot Post hold advanced degrees from the University of Tennessee and, accordingly, have submitted protests. (Our editors did actual research for their degrees.)

Climategates purveyors of phony science get a look from The Patriot Post…

Denial: “Nothing that has come out in the public as a result of the recent email hackings has cast doubt on the basic scientific message on climate change and that message is quite clear — that climate change is happening much, much faster than we realized and we human beings are the primary cause.” –UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon

“I think the e-mail scandal is being used as a political side show to deflect interest in actually dealing with climate change. I think, in that regard, it will fail.” –Princeton University’s Professor Michael Oppenheimer

“There is nothing in the hacked e-mails that undermines the science upon which this decision is based.” –EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson asserting the farcical government stance that carbon dioxide is harmful to humans

It’ll never be enough: “Are we doing enough? The answer is obviously no — [restricting world emissions of carbon dioxide at or below 450 parts per million] is not the right target. But it is presently seen as beyond the capacity of governments around the world. We are stretching the capacity of governments even to hit a 450 target. We are gambling with the future of human civilization in accepting odds that by any definition make our present course reckless…. But it’s still the most likely path to success.” –Algore

It’s already too late: “Even a final treaty will have to set the stage for other tougher [emissions] reductions at a later date. We have already overshot the safe levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.” –Algore

Looks to be right out of the stupid is as stupid does file to me.

The Junk Science front

October 11, 2009

No, this time your tax money didn’t go to more man made global warming stupidity. But rather to a group that uses predetermined outcomes in order to bolster their failed belief that surrender is the way to go when your life is threatened.

One would think that a group of Doctors would seek proper treatment for their mental disease. There is hope for this devastating condition. Hoplobe’s resist your un-natural urges!

Now, more than at any other time in anyone’s memory, the federal government is in no position to waste taxpayer dollars on gun control advocacy “research.”  Nevertheless, the National Institutes of Health recently gave anti-gun researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine $639,586 to conduct a survey intended to prove that possessing a gun doesn’t benefit assault victims.

Criminologist Gary Kleck calls the resulting survey “the very epitome of junk science in the guns-and-violence field—poor quality research designed to arrive at an ideologically predetermined conclusion.”

Here’s how it was done.  The Pennsylvania researchers surveyed only those assault victims who were shot, limited in the last six months of the survey to victims who were fatally shot.  It did not consider the far more numerous gun owners who used guns for self-defense successfully without being shot, nor crimes that were not even attempted because the criminals feared that prospective victims might be armed.

The survey was further limited to residents of urban Philadelphia who, according to the research, “were significantly more often Hispanic, more frequently working in high-risk occupations, less educated, and had a greater frequency of prior arrest,” compared to the rest of the population.  Victims who were shot in Philly, but who were not from Philly, were excluded too.  The survey considered a victim to be “armed” even if his gun was “in a nearby vehicle, or in another place.”

As Kleck says, “none of the evidence presented by the authors actually has any relevance to the issue of the effectiveness of defensive gun use, for the simple reason that at no point do they ever compare crime victims who used guns defensively with victims who did not.”  Kleck notes that other published research “reached precisely the opposite conclusions” reached by the NIH-funded survey.

What Kleck had in mind were the results of the federal government’s annual National Crime Victimization Survey, covering tens of thousands of assaults.  Kleck and others have reviewed those surveys and found that people who use guns to defend against assaults are less likely to be injured than people who use other means, or no means, of protection.

Climate Change This Week: ‘Consensus’ Via Gag Rule

May 2, 2009

Earlier today I posted about Freedom of Speech what follows directly relates to that issue.

Climate Change This Week: ‘Consensus’ Via Gag Rule

Call it the Global Warming Gag Rule. Last week, House Democrats barred Lord Christopher Monckton, former science advisor to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, from testifying along with former Vice President Al Gore at a global warming hearing on Capitol Hill. Monckton — a critic of global warming who was invited to testify by Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX), ranking member on the Energy and Commerce Committee — learned upon arriving from London that Democrats had nixed Monckton’s appearance. “The House Democrats don’t want Gore humiliated, so they slammed the door of the Capitol in my face,” Monckton stated. “[They] have a lot to learn about the right of free speech under the U.S. Constitution. Congress[man] Henry Waxman’s refusal to expose Al Gore’s sci-fi comedy-horror testimony to proper, independent scrutiny by the House minority reeks of naked fear.”

This came just days before Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, speaking at the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate, blamed the U.S. for contributing to climate change, claiming an international crisis and arguing, “The facts on the ground are outstripping the worst case scenario models.” These “facts,” however, are hardly indisputable. Regardless of the facts, Democrats, as usual, have decided to follow the surest, safest path to “consensus” — silencing all opposition.

Global Warming, political correctness, and oh yeah…

April 21, 2009

Fat people are destroying the earth! Quick! Someone get a special international court set up! I mean..? After all, people simply cannot do anything at all about volcanoes, or the oceans, and certainly not the sun. But we sure as hell can come up with some stupid idea to further ridicule people that are over weight. Talk about political correctness…

Scientists: ‘Fat people cause global warming’
According to the study, the transportation and food costs of obese people are contributing to increasing energy prices and food defects.
Tuesday, April 21, 2009

LONDON (UPI) — Some British experts say fat people are contributing to global warming more than those who are thin because they require more food and fuel.

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine scientists said the transportation and food costs of obese people are contributing to increasing energy prices and food defects.

“We are all becoming heavier and it is a global responsibility. Obesity is a key part of the big picture,” researcher Phil Edwards said.

Critics argue that food waste causes a much bigger strain on resources than obesity and it is unfair to blame overweight individuals for the world’s problems, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.

“Obese people have enough issues to deal with without being demonized for their impact on the environment. The truth is all people are an environmental burden,” said Keith-Thomas Ayoob of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

Science is beyond dispute?

April 15, 2009

Fake “scientists” are still at it. Seems they have always been around though actually. Don’t allow facts to get in their way though! They will have a hissy fit and go off on their politically correct agenda’s. This is in fact the norm for to so-called “soft sciences.” Sociology, Psychology, and the like. Not from fact based sciences, such as geology or climatology. At least that is not the norm. Remember global cooling..? I do, and no to the Chicken Little’s of that bygone time, the sky has not fallen. I would say the same to the alarmist’s of today…

Read on.

“President Obama has said that the science of global warming is ‘beyond dispute,’ and therefore settled. This is the justification for the imposition of a carbon cap-and-trade system that will cost $2 trillion. But Obama does not understand science. ‘Settled science’ is an oxymoron, and anyone who characterizes science as ‘settled’ or ‘indisputable’ is ignorant not only of science, but also history and philosophy. Aristotle, who lived and wrote in the fourth century B.C., was one of the greatest geniuses the world has ever known. He invented the discipline of logic, and founded the sciences of ecology and biology. Aristotle’s physics were accepted as correct for nearly two thousand years. … Aristotle taught that heavy objects fall faster than light ones. Over the centuries, a few unreasonable persons expressed skeptical concerns. But the consensus was that the physics of motion were described by Aristotle’s dicta. The science was settled. Around the year 1591, an irascible young instructor at the University of Pisa demonstrated that Aristotle was wrong. He climbed to the top of the tower of Pisa and dropped cannonballs of unequal weight that hit the ground simultaneously. Aristotelean professors on the faculty were embarrassed. The university administration responded by not renewing Galileo’s contract, thus ridding themselves of a troublemaker who challenged the accepted consensus. … President Obama, a lawyer and politician, would now have us believe that the process of history has stopped. For the first time, scientific knowledge is not provisional and subject to revision, but final and settled. Skepticism, which has been the spur to all innovation and human progress, is unacceptable and must be condemned. But in fact, it is our awareness of what we do not know that determines our scientific level. … Knowledge begins with skepticism and ends with conceit.” –University of Oklahoma geologist David Deming

More from the Gore

December 12, 2008

Pumping the new religion of man caused global warming Al Gore is set to make yet even more millions. Never mind that his theory has been totaly debunked by responsible scientists the world over… I mean hell, it snowed in the deep south! Someone please tell those folks how that is global warming!

H/T to Texas Fred!

POZNAN, Poland (AP) — Climate campaigner Al Gore has urged negotiators at a U.N. global warming conference to free themselves of outdated ways of looking at the planet.

Gore says the delegates — like everyone else — are vulnerable to misperceptions, just as man once thought the sun revolved around the Earth.

He said scientists disproved that, beginning with the Polish astronomer Copernicus. Today, misperceptions may mislead us to believe there is little urgency to fight climate change. But scientists say quick action is needed to avoid catastrophic consequences.
