Profiles of valor: USA Sgt. Claude

August 8, 2008

In September 2007, United States Army Sergeant Charles Claude Jr. was on patrol in Mosul, Iraq, as the turret gunner in an M1117 Guardian Armored Security Vehicle (ASV). Claude’s convoy noticed an IED ahead and sent forward troops to neutralize it as quickly as possible. As soon as it was disabled, however, insurgents attacked from all directions with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. Sgt. Claude fired back, taking out two insurgent vehicles—known as “technicals” —before being hit himself by a barrage of fire. His vehicle commander was also wounded. But Claude fought on despite his wound, and despite the fact that the sights of his machine gun were destroyed by enemy fire. Then, in close-quarters fighting, an insurgent jumped onto Claude’s vehicle. While the driver tried to throw the insurgent off, Claude spun his turret toward the enemy and ended the threat. As the area was secured, Claude continued to ignore his wound while providing defensive cover. Later it was discovered that the two disabled enemy “technicals” were mobile weapons caches, and they were no longer in the hands of terrorists. Sgt. Claude’s courageous actions that day saved numerous American lives and turned the tables on an enemy ambush. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor.

Senate Vote Is Good News For Gun Rights

Gun owners won an important vote in the U.S. Senate this week, when more
than three dozen senators stood with Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma
in his battle against Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

Reid fell eight votes short on Monday of stopping Coburn, who has been using
parliamentary maneuvers to keep anti-gun legislation (and pork) from coming
to the Senate floor for votes.

Sen. Coburn has placed a “hold” on more than 80 bills since
January of last
year — including the bill which recently extended the National Parks gun
ban to the Washington-Rochambeau trail.

Under the rules, one senator may block the progress of an objectionable bill
by issuing a “hold” — a maneuver which prevents a bill from
speedily moving
through the legislative process.

The frustrated dictator of the Senate (a.k.a. Reid) combined 36 of the bills
which have come under Coburn’s ire into a big omnibus bill and added all
kinds of pork to entice senators into supporting the measure. Nevertheless,
Reid still fell eight votes short of what was needed to defeat Coburn’s
holds.

GOA wants to thank all of you who took the time during the last week to urge
your senators to stand with Coburn!

VETERANS DISARMAMENT UPDATE

In other Senate news, Richard Burr’s bill to repeal large parts of the
Veterans Disarmament Act is gaining steam. The Republican senator from
North Carolina introduced the Veterans Protection Act (S. 3167) after
President Bush signed a gun ban into law this year — a law which, among
other things, disarms military veterans who have been diagnosed with PTSD.
The Burr bill, which now has 18 cosponsors, would protect the rights of
military veterans and make it more difficult for the Veterans Affairs to
deny them their Second Amendment rights.

GOA members should have received their latest newsletter by now. This issue
contains a key update on the Veterans Protection Act in the House
(introduced by Rep. Virgil Goode) and answers frequently asked questions by
gun owners such as: what should I do when I’m denied by the Brady Check and
can I run a NICS check on myself?

ACTION:

1. Continue asking your two senators to stand with Sen. Coburn in defying
the strong-arm tactics of Majority Leader Reid. Further to that, urge them
to cosponsor Coburn’s bill (S. 2807) repealing the gun ban in the National
Parks. You can visit the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center at
http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm to send your Senators the pre-written
e-mail message below.

2. Make sure you check out the latest GOA newsletter and mail the enclosed
postcards in support of the Veterans Protection Act if you have not already
done so. Thank you!

—– Pre-written letter —–

Dear Senator:

I was very happy to hear that the Senate stood with Tom Coburn and refused
to vote for Harry Reid’s pork-laden omnibus bill on Monday, July 28.

I applaud Senator Coburn’s efforts to return our government to a
constitutional basis, and I hope that the Senate will act on his bill to
repeal the National Park Service gun ban (S. 2807).

Please stand with Sen. Coburn against the strong-arm tactics of Sen. Reid
and support the repeal of the NPS gun ban.

Sincerely,

Texas Guard troops penalized for breaking lease

July 28, 2008

TexasFred found out about this and I applaud him for exposing it! Lend a hand and pass it on!

MCKINNEY – A North Texas couple is getting ready for their second deployment overseas.

They’re leaving to serve their country but instead they’ve been served with fees from their landlord.

“It’s a job, we have to do it,” said Chris Horvath.

But they’re leaving with added stress, since they’ve been in a fight with their apartment complex – McKinney’s El Lago development.

The couple, both of whom are sergeants in the Texas National Guard, are soon headed to Iraq.

Full Story Here:
Iraq-bound guards penalized for breaking apartment lease

These are the names and addresses I have so far, there are some inquiries being made by a contact I have that IS in the apartment business. I do know this much, the TAA, Texas Apartment Association has a specific clause in their contract concerning military personnel and their transfers and activations, and that clause is in favor OF the troops.

I called El Lago Apartments and spoke to a person named Stephanie, and according to her the El Lago Apartments doesn’t operate under TAA leasing agreements. They would discuss the matter no further.

I am trying to pin down something on this El Lago Partners LTD, I might not be able to get it all until Monday, I have *feelers* out.

I will also be contacting the National Guard Bureau Public Affairs On Call, PAO email (703)-627-7273 and the office of Public Affairs email (703)-607-2584 on Monday.

I hope some of you will post this on your blogs and get involved, this type of thing can’t be allowed to happen to our troops. No matter how you feel about Bush and the war in Iraq, this isn’t about him, it’s about our TROOPS, and they have no choice but to follow orders and go when and where they are ordered.

Please, get involved.

Same old arguments …

July 26, 2008

Mayor Daley of Chicago keeps the old anti-gun rhetoric alive with the same old worn out, and for the most part baseless arguments. In the name of safety he decides that freedom can be taken away.

He wonders about Firefighters and Police Officers responding to crime sceanes. Hate to tell you this mister mayor, but responding to a DV as they are called in Public Safety are, and always will be one of the most dangerous calls to go on. I know, I have been there and done that, and even have a T-shirt!

Bad things do happen in life Mister Mayor. Get used to it. I spent more than twenty two years in Public Safety and have seen those bad things countless times. I also saw what the result was when people were allowed to properly and effectivly defend themselves, their families, and neighbors. Guns save far more innocent lives when in proper hands, that is citizans hands, than they ever harm innocents. The comparativly few times that the things you talk about happen are outweighed by the good things by far.

If what I say is not true, then why are “gun friendly” cities and states so much safer than Chicago, D.C., and so on?

Changing times, life in America goes on

July 7, 2008

I’ve been busy as of late. I’m going to be moving to Wyoming in about a month or so. My girlfriend is leaving this coming Friday. It is amazing how much clutter you can gather in the space of a few years. Still, some things have lasted over time.

The only picture that I have of my daughter Brianna that died while in my arms. The old Ruger revolver in a caliber that almost everyone loves, but that is going by the wayside. The Remington rifle that I scrimped by on other things for years to purchase. The Orvis Fly rod that took forever to finally get. My camo for bow hunting, even though the nerve damage in my arm will probably prevent me from ever going afield with a stick and string again. A DD 215 modified to reflect a few things that just plain were missed when the original was filled out. My old certificate for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and the Gold Paramedic shoulder patch. A copy of the cover of Field and Stream magazine that had an Elk that I took.

It has been a long time this stint here in Colorado. I love this place, for all it’s faults. I moved here thirty years ago to get away from all the crowding in San Diego, and Oceanside. The constant rushing just to survive. Now, the Colorado Front Range looks like the strip between San Ysidro and Oceanside and the people are acting exactly the same.It is probably a good thing that I am leaving this place that I love. For it has changed, and not for the good. We no longer have a Denver or Front Range area. Just listen to the preening people on the television or radio. Now it’s “The Metro.”

I may have time for one last trip into the Indian Peaks Wilderness where I know of three small pools where my fellow transplants, the Golden Trout still survive. They are wary, and difficult to catch, but well worth the effort. They are elusive, wild, and free, like men should be. I have always returned them to the water, and I hope that any others that witness their beauty will do the same.I will visit the place where I spread my daughters ashes near the Moffat Tunnel, and say a prayer, it might be the last time that I can get there.

Sua Sponte Colorado! Because I chose too!

Those Oldies but Goody’s …

July 1, 2008

I received this from my good friend TexasFred in the mail this morning. It is indeed and oldie, and a goody’s. Enjoy, or cry in your granola whichever fits…

I received this from my neighbor and fellow gun nut and thought it was really great, I am sending it email and will post on the blog as well, please feel free to send it out if you like, or use it on your blogs too…
Fred

The purpose of fighting is to win.

There is no possible victory in defense.

The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either.

The final weapon is the brain.

All else is supplemental.

1. Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

3. I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him ‘Why do you carry a 45?’

The Ranger responded, ‘Because they don’t make a 46.’

6. An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.

7. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. ‘Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?’

‘No Ma’am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.’

8. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

But wait, there’s more!

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did.

She said ‘Well I certainly hope it isn’t loaded!’

To which I said, of course it is loaded, can’t work without bullets!’

She then asked, ‘Are you that afraid of some one evil coming into your house?’

My reply was, ‘No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.’

To which I’ll add, having a gun in the house that isn’t loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

I’m a firm believer of the 2nd Amendment! If you are too, please pass this around.

Obamasia and his ever changing ways

June 29, 2008

Obama Tries To Move Forward By Backpedaling: By now we all know where presidential nominee Barack Obama stands on the Second Amendment. During the primaries, Obama tried to hide behind vague statements of support for “sportsmen” or unfounded claims of general support for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. But don’t listen to his campaign rhetoric! His real record, based on votes taken, political associations, long-standing positions, and his own words, shows that Barack Obama is a very serious threat to our Second Amendment liberties

GOA Hits The Airwaves On Heller Decision

June 29, 2008

— Now looks forward to challenging other gun control laws around the
country

Yesterday was a historic day for the gun rights movement.

For starters, Gun Owners of America is pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court,
in the DC v. Heller opinion, struck down the handgun ban and trigger lock
requirement in the nation’s capital.

As a result, GOA experts have spent the last two days using radio, TV and
print media to explain the Court’s decision and its impact upon the future
of the gun debate in America.

GOA’s amicus brief urged the Court not to use the Heller case as a
springboard to resolve the constitutionality of all of the nation’s firearms
laws.  In fact, the GOA brief was the only one making the request not to
rule on automatic weapons and other issues, upholding judicial restraint.

GOA is pleased that the judges heeded our admonition to limit the Court’s
holding to the case before it.

In so doing, the Court’s decision — in dissenting Justice Breyers words —
“threatens to throw into doubt the constitutionality of gun laws
throughout
the United States.”

Notable gun banner, Dianne Feinstein, was equally upset, saying she was
“profoundly disappointed” in the Court decision.

The U.S. Supreme Court also followed GOA’s urging and refused to do any
balancing of governmental powers and individual liberties — it just ruled
the ban was prohibited by the text of the Second Amendment, saying that its
language elevates, above all other interests, the “right of law-abiding,
responsible citizens to use arms in defense of hearth and home.”

However, the Court stated its opinion should “not be taken to cast
doubt” on
at least some prohibited persons’ restrictions, gun free school zones bans
and dealer licensing requirements.  This dicta implies that, in the future,
courts might go further than the Constitution permits in upholding some gun
restrictions.

Nevertheless, the Court’s opinion directly conflicts with what anti-rights
advocates — like those in the Brady Campaign — have been saying for years.
So GOA welcomes the opportunity to continue our fight for the people’s right
to keep and bear arms.

GOA is already preparing to wage constitutional challenges to a range of
laws — federal, state and local — that violate the Second Amendment
principles endorsed by the Court in yesterday’s majority opinion.

To contribute to these efforts, you can go to
http://www.gunowners.com/dogfund.htm and make a tax deductible contribution
to the Defend Our Guns (DOG) Fund.  Contributing to this DOG Fund will allow
our committed and courageous legal team to make Justice Breyer’s fears a
reality.

Gun Owners Foundation wants to lay the groundwork for the next battle in the
Second Amendment war between those of us who love liberty and those who
would allow the government to disarm us as the first step to our own
enslavement.

You contribution to the DOG Fund is tax deductible, and it will go a long
way towards helping us preserve our Second Amendment rights — not only for
ourselves, but for our children as well.

This battle is far from over my friends.

The “Supremes” again, and no, not the singing group

June 25, 2008

Today as I was driving the “Fruitliner” down I-225 there was breaking news … The Supreme Court had rendered yet another bizarre decision. That being, that the death penalty was both “cruel and unusual” punishment for child rapists.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/26/washington/26scotuscnd.html?em&ex=1214625600&en=c70d615789f2e6fc&ei=5087%0A

Is it cruel? Certainly it is, almost as cruel as the crime. Is it unusual? Yes, and that needs changing in a big way. What really bothers me though, is that these “Justice’s” overturned the will of a jury, duly selected from the perpetrators peers. There was no indication of racial prejudice, or prosecutorial misconduct. It was the will of the people that this person had so violated acceptable norms set by the community where the act had been committed, that death was appropriate as societal retribution.

I spent more then twenty years working the streets as a Paramedic. I saw things that most people can only guess at. People are always asking, what was the most terrible thing that you ever saw? Guess what, it was child rape victims. Those kids lives were wrecked, forever, period. I went on calls involving three of them again years later, as suicides. As far as I am concerned, the rapist killed those kids. Others that do live? I have never seen one that was fully healed. Drugs, alcohol, and the absolute lack of an ability to have a fulfilling sex life themselves, or an ability to trust others are the norm. Worse yet, sometimes they became sexual abusers themselves.

The death penalty is appropriate for certain crimes …

I’m too angry to keep typing, more later …
