DOW TO OFFER HUNTING MARKSMANSHIP CLASS SEPT. 26-27

If you are new to hunting a course like this can save you years of frustration. Hat tip to the Colorado Division of Wildlife!

MONTE VISTA, Colo.–The Colorado Division of Wildlife will host a Hunting Marksmanship Class in Monte Vista on Sept.  26-27. The class will take place at the Division of Wildlife Monte Vista Service Center, 0722 South Road 1 East.

The purpose of the class is to teach adult big game hunters how to refine and apply their basic marksmanship skills to become better hunters.  Topics include proper zeroing and marksmanship techniques, range estimation, shot placement and equipment.  This class will include a shooting session at the Rio Grande Sportsman’s Range.  Hunters of all skill levels are welcome to attend.

Participants must bring their own centerfire rifle (preferably the rifle used to hunt big game) and ammunition with a minimum of 30 to 40 rounds. This class will be limited to 20 participants and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will be three sessions: morning classroom on the 26th for all participants, a range session during the afternoon of the 26th for half of the class, and a range session on the morning of the 27th for the remaining participants.

UNCOMPAHGRE PLATEAU MOUNTAIN LION RESEARCH AREA MEETINGS

MONTROSE, Colo.– The Colorado Division of Wildlife will be holding meetings to discuss the upcoming lion hunting season in the research area on the south end of the Uncompahgre Plateau in portions of Game Management Units (GMUs) 61, 62, and 70.

Discussion will include quotas, season dates, a permit system for the research area and how hunters can participate in the research effort.  As time allows, biologists will discuss lion management outside of the research area.

The meetings are aimed at mountain lion hunters.  General lion information will not be discussed.  Mountain lion hunters are invited to ask questions and discuss issues with DOW staff.

The first meeting will be at 7 p.m., Sept. 16 at the Delta Montrose Electric Association building in Montrose, 11925 6300 Rd.  The second meeting will be at 7 p.m., Sept. 17 at the Redvale Community Center in Redvale.

Can you spell treason? I knew ya’ could! : Lautenberg S. 1317

Senator Lautenberg, after having sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America used deceit and dishonor to inflict what is perhaps the most destructive set of law that the American people have ever had to endure. He did so by directly imposing ex post facto law upon the people of America. That, ladies and gentlemen, is called treason, in the legal sense, as well as in the moral sense.

Once again, the race for liberty is on people. As I have been posting here and across the internet the health care debacle is nothing more than a smoke screen. These things are called “false flag operations.” Designed to catch your awareness so that other things may be done while your attention is concentrated elsewhere. These… Czars, they are appointed, not vetted by the people at all, and only on occasion by our elected representatives. Americans having Czars? How many citizens of America are ethnic Russians? One hell of a lot! They left Russia as well as the peoples paradise called the Soviet Union for a reason.

Now? We are dealing with what?

A full blown nut case!

Radical ‘Regulatory Czar’ Could Pose Problems for Gun Owners

Yesterday, another radical extremist joined the ranks of the Obama administration.

Cass Sunstein, who is an old friend of Barack Obama, is now our new Regulatory Czar.  You will recall that he is the guy who wants animals to sue hunters and other Americans.

He also supports gun control.

While his nomination as head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs passed the Senate by a 57-40 vote yesterday, the REAL vote was actually much closer — losing only by three votes.

That vote occurred on Wednesday, when Republicans tried to kill his nomination using a filibuster — a procedure which required Democrats to muster 60 votes.  Every Democrat (except for three) voted for Sunstein.  The three Senators who voted against Sunstein on the filibuster were Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), Mark Pryor (D-AR) and James Webb (D-VA).

Unfortunately, a handful of Republicans crossed party lines to help Sunstein overcome the procedural roadblock.  The Republican traitors who crossed party lines on Wednesday were Senators Bob Bennett (UT), Sue Collins (ME), Judd Gregg (NH), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Richard Lugar (IN) and Olympia Snowe (ME).

Dishonorable mention goes to Republican-turned-Democrat Senator Arlen Specter (PA) who voted for Sunstein — as well as Senator Mark Pryor (D-AR), who waited until the end of the voting period to finally cast his ballot against Sunstein.

Regarding Pryor, you will remember that in August, he waited until the last minute to cast his vote in favor of the concealed carry reciprocity amendment.  When it became clear the anti-gunners had a comfortable margin of victory, Sen. Pryor actually switched his vote at the last minute.

The cloture vote on Wednesday — ending the filibuster on Sunstein — was 63-35.  You can see how your two Senators voted on the filibuster and on final passage by going to the GOA Vote Tracking section.

As the Regulatory Czar, Sunstein will provide the final touches on new federal regulations.  No firearm or ammunition needs to be banned outright — that would be too transparent.  As the coauthor of Nudge (2008), Sunstein has already laid out how “choice architects” should carefully guide (or nudge) Americans into making better choices.

So with a little regulation here … a little regulation there … Sunstein can strengthen the iron fist of the federal gun police (otherwise known as the BATFE).  Or, he can implement additional federal requirements which will result in firearm and ammunition manufacturers paying more for their merchandise.

Of course, these costs will be passed on to the consumer as new “taxes” that will “nudge” Americans away from purchasing firearms or engaging in the shooting sports.

In short, be prepared for more “change” from Washington and less spare change in your pockets.

Be vigilant about BATFE spying!

GOA has received a report from a very well-known journalist at a big newspaper that the FBI and BATFE are teaming up together to get off-the-record information on gun owners.  The project, known as Vigilant Eagle, involves federal agents going to gun stores and doing “meet and greets” with shop owners in the hopes of obtaining informal information on people buying guns.

Just when you thought the news about the Obama administration couldn’t get any worse, gun owners find themselves needing to rally the troops once again.

This time it’s the proposed “Regulatory Czar” who will be coming to a vote this week in the U.S. Senate.

His name is Cass Sunstein, and he holds some of the kookiest views you will ever hear.

For starters, Sunstein believes in regulating hunting out of existence.  He told a Harvard audience in 2007 that “we ought to ban hunting.” And in The Rights of Animals: A Very Short Primer (2002), he said:

I think we should go further … the law should impose further regulation on hunting, scientific experiments, entertainment, and (above all) farming to ensure against unnecessary animal suffering.  It is easy to imagine a set of initiatives that would do a great deal here, and indeed European nations have moved in just this direction. There are many possibilities.  (Italics are his emphasis.)

If that’s all Sunstein believed, he would be dangerous and extreme, but not necessarily kooky.  Unfortunately, when you look at WHY he wants to restrict hunting, this is where he goes beyond extreme.

In Sunstein’s world, animals should have just as many rights as people … and they should be able to sue humans in court!

“We could even grant animals a right to bring suit without insisting that animals are persons, or that they are not property,” Sunstein said on page 11 of Animal Rights: Current Debates and New Directions (2004).

Well, that’s a relief … he is at least willing to concede that animals are not persons!  But he would still have animals suing humans, apparently, with more enlightened humans representing the cuddly critters.

Imagine returning from a successful hunting trip … only to find out that you’ve been subpoenaed for killing your prize.  Who knows, maybe Sunstein would have the family of the dead animal serving as witnesses in court!

By the way, if you’re wondering what he thinks about the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, you won’t be surprised to know that Sunstein is a huge supporter of gun control.

In Radicals in Robes: Why Extreme Right-Wing Courts are Wrong for America (2005), Sunstein says:

Almost all gun control legislation is constitutionally fine…. [O]n the Constitution’s text, fundamentalists [that is, gun rights supporters] should not be so confident in their enthusiasm for invalidating gun control legislation.

Hmm, what part of “shall not be infringed” does Sunstein not understand?

Imagine the power that Sunstein could have as the Regulatory Czar — the nickname for the person heading the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) in the White House.

As the Regulatory Czar, he could bring about changes in the regulations that affect hunting, gun control and farming.  In short, he could make your life hell.

Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) objected to his nomination several weeks ago, preventing him from being unanimously confirmed.

That means that the Senate will now need to garner 60 votes to confirm this radical, kooky choice to the OIRA.

No doubt, many of the people our President wants to associate with are radical kooks.  First, there was the Rev. Jeremiah Wright … then there was the self-avowed communist (Van Jones) who was nominated for the Green Jobs Czar … now, there’s an extreme animal rights activist who wants to take away our guns and get Bambi to sue us in court.

It’s time to take a STRONG STAND against this radical administration.

I urge you to vote AGAINST Cass Sunstein as the head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, as I am very concerned about the impact this “Regulatory Czar” would have upon firearms and hunting.

I hope you will understand that Cass Sunstein’s views are WAY OUT OF THE MAINSTREAM of American thought and that you should vote NO on this radical, kooky nomination.

HOTCHKISS MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO POACHING DEER AND SELLING MEAT

HOTCHKISS, Colo.–A tip from an observant citizen resulted in a felony conviction for a Hotchkiss poacher who offered big-game meat for sale in classified advertisements published in a local newspaper earlier this year.

Cody Hopkins, 23, pleaded guilty to illegal sale of wildlife, illegal possession of a deer and hunting deer without a license in Colorado District Court in Delta on July 27, 2009. Hopkins was given a one-year deferred sentence and fined $2,002.50.

A hearing examiner for the Colorado Wildlife Commission will also review the facts of the case. As a result, Hopkins may face a suspension of his hunting and fishing privileges in Colorado and 30 other states.

Hopkins was originally charged with four felonies. In addition to a conviction on the felony count of illegal sale of wildlife, Hopkins was convicted of one misdemeanor count of illegal take of a deer and one misdemeanor count of hunting deer without a license.

The investigation into Hopkins’ activities began in late January, when the Colorado Division of Wildlife received a call through Operation Game Thief from a concerned citizen who saw a classified ad in the High Country Shopper offering big-game meat for sale.

DOW investigators called the number in February and arranged to meet Hopkins in Hotchkiss where Hopkins sold about 50 pounds of meat to an undercover officer. At the meeting, Hopkins told investigators that the package included deer meat and meat from a cow elk that had been killed the previous weekend.  Hopkins also sold deer and elk meat to undercover investigators on a couple of other occasions.

Hopkins was arrested in April.

Doug Homan, district wildlife officer in Hotchkiss, said that the crimes might have gone unnoticed if not for the concerned citizen.

“We can never emphasize enough how much we rely on citizens to help us by reporting suspected crimes against wildlife,” Homan said. “People who take wildlife illegally are stealing from licensed sportsmen and women and from all the citizens of Colorado.”

Suspected wildlife crimes can be reported to Operation Game Thief at 1-877-265-6648. Tips can be given anonymously and rewards are often provided for information leading to convictions.

LAMAR SHOOTING CLINIC GEARED TOWARD LADIES AND KIDS

LAMAR, Colo. – The Colorado Division of Wildlife will offer a free Shooting Instruction Clinic followed by an optional guided Dove Hunting Clinic east of Lamar on Sun., Sept. 13.

The clinic is geared toward women and youth who are new to hunting.  The event begins with an informal cookout at 1 p.m., followed by an instruction session, and then a guided dove hunt until around 6 p.m.  The DOW will supply all of the hunting equipment and host the cookout.

“A similar program was held last year near Las Animas, and the kids and ladies who attended had a blast — pun intended,” said Linda Groat, and outreach education specialist with the Division of Wildlife.

This year’s event will take place at the Mike Higbee State Wildlife Area four miles east of Lamar off Highway 50.

“The first portion of the afternoon is what we call a Bang ‘N Twang,” said Groat.  The focus is getting hands on experience shooting shotguns and archery equipment.  There is also an electronic big-game hunting simulation game.

Following the Bang ‘N Twang, participants have an option of going on a guided dove hunt with DOW instructors.  Participants must attend the Bang “N Twang and a shooting safety talk in order to go dove hunting.

Dove hunters must have a valid Hunter Ed card and a 2009 small game hunting license with a HIP number to participate.   Each youngster must be accompanied by adult, parent, or sponsor; and must pre-register.

The cost of a Colorado small game license for youth under 18 is $1.  The cost for resident adult annual license is $21.  A one-day small game license is $11.

DENVER, Colo. — The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) will participate in its first-ever National Hunting & Fishing Day by hosting an event on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Denver Headquarters, 6060 Broadway, Denver.  The full day event, beginning at 9:00 AM, will be jam-packed with educational seminars and opportunities for newcomers and seasoned recreationists to cast, shoot and learn outdoor skills in a safe and comfortable environment.

“The DOW recognizes the importance of teaching the hunting and angling heritage to new generations of Coloradoans.  Our wildlife resource is one of the most treasured in the nation–it’s critical that we continue to foster stewardship, conservation, and concern about the future of our animals and fish,” said Mark Cousins, Hunter Education Coordinator for DOW.

Experienced anglers and hunters will enjoy an array of presentations from Colorado wildlife experts, ranging in topics from quail hunting to mapping your hunt, fishing hot spots to carp fishing on a fly, with noted author Barry Reynolds.  Novices, family, and friends of sportsmen can try their hand at shooting a .22, fly rod casting, or getting a Junior Wildlife Officer badge.  Plus, a demonstration of hunting dogs by Pheasants Forever will show everyone how skilled and smart these clever canines are on a hunt!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR COLORADO BIG GAME HUNTERS

Colorado’s big game hunting season is almost here.  As hunters prepare during the weeks ahead, the Colorado Division of Wildlife reminds hunters to be aware of the following items before entering the field this season:

CWD Testing

Beginning this year, chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing is now $25 at all DOW submission sites.  The DOW has increased hunter testing fees to help cover a larger share of the costs associated with the CWD testing program.  Currently, it costs the DOW nearly $100 for processing, testing, head disposal and reporting for each submission.

Testing is voluntary for elk and deer in all Game Management Units for the 2009-10 seasons.  Moose testing for CWD is mandatory statewide and is free at all DOW submission sites.

Leftover Licenses

Big game licenses are still available for the upcoming seasons. Leftover and general over-the-counter licenses, as well as over-the-counter bear licenses and turkey licenses (with caps), are available for purchase online (www.wildlife.state.co.us), by telephone (1-800-244-5613) and at statewide license agents and Division of Wildlife offices.   A list of all available leftover licenses is available at: http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/Leftovers/ .

Shooting Ranges

Hunters are encouraged to sight-in rifles prior to entering the field. Hunters familiar with their equipment make hunting safer for everyone, and practice improves marksmanship and builds confidence.

Sighting-in of firearms is especially important for nonresident hunters. Scopes and equipment may get knocked out of alignment during transit, and practicing at a range close to the hunting destination provides a last-minute equipment check.

Colorado offers convenient and diverse public shooting ranges that are open year-round.  A large number of private ranges also offer public “sight-in” days prior to the major hunting seasons.

Hunter Education ‘Crash’ Courses

All hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1949 must complete an approved hunter education course prior to hunting in Colorado.  The Colorado Division of Wildlife offers one-day “crash” hunter education courses intended, primarily, for non-resident hunters who wish to hunt in Colorado but do not have a valid hunter education certificate/card from their state of residence.

Crash courses are taught during one, eight-hour day of intensive instruction, within one week of the opening of a regular big game rifle season.  This compressed instruction and scheduling enables non-resident hunters to come to Colorado, take and pass the hunter education course and hunt—all in concert with their trip.

Successful completion of a crash course earns a temporary Colorado Hunter Education Certificate, which is valid until the end of the calendar year in which the course was taken and passed.

YOUTH ARCHERY and SHOTGUN SHOOTING CLINIC IN EL PASO COUNTY

RAMAH, Colo. – Youngsters interested in the sports of archery and shotgun shooting are invited to attend a free one-day event at the Ramah State Wildlife Area Archery Range, Sat., Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Activities include a shotgun target & fun shoot, a laser gun computerized shooting station, a 3-D archery shoot, and instruction.

“This is a great opportunity for youngsters to learn about shooting sports and try their hand at using a bow and learning about firearms safety,” said Steve Lucero, an education coordinator with the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Instructors from the DOW and trained volunteers will help youngsters learn the finer points of shooting shotguns and bows.

The DOW will furnish the equipment.

The Ramah Archery Range is located four miles west of the town of Ramah at the Ramah State Wildlife Area along U.S. Hwy 24 in northeastern El Paso County.

All ages are welcome.  Boys and girls under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  Activities will run continuously throughout the event.
