Ruger 10/22 fans: More bang for the buck!

October 20, 2009

It’s not often that I endorse a product or service but that is precisely what this will be. If you are anti-gun or have something against the Ruger© 10 / 22 Rifles, the most popular rim fire rifle in the world then stop reading.

I recently purchased a 10/22 rifle for my better half, as she had expressed an interest in learning to shoot. She had attended two “Becoming An Outdoors Woman” clinics that were offered by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. They may have created an addict because we are now getting her a Remington 870 Shotgun as well.

I have taught so many people to shoot over the years that I have learned a few things about doing that. One of the biggest is that trying to teach someone with inferior tools just results in utter disappointment, and frustration. For the student as well as the instructor, and that friend, is not a good thing.

Please don’t misunderstand me. The 10/22 is one of the absolute best semi-auto rifles that exist in whatever configuration. However, my better half, is an Engineer, and (sighs) a perfectionist to say the least. Ruger, like all the manufacturers have to live in a world filled with lawsuits and political correctness. What that translates into is a trigger near eight pounds, which was rough, gritty, and not at all acceptable. The magazine release was rough to use as well, and the Bolt Release was a nightmare to get working properly, if it would work at all. Still, I had high hopes…

I topped it off with a good but inexpensive scope. Finally found some 22 Long Rifle ammunition, and off to the range I went after using a BSA brand Bore sighting tool.

I initially did a “200 inch zero,” and things looked pretty good. Then I moved out to about twenty-five feet, and put ten rounds into about a dime sized group. I thought, alright, I must have pulled a few. It happens to the best of us sometimes after all. I put up another target and put five rounds down the spout. Four o’clock on the Nine Ring and not much over a quarter inch. Not bad, not bad at all. Considering the solid lead ammo that I was forced to use due to the nation wide ammunition shortage. 10/22’s are notorious for liking jacketed ammunition. But, still I wasn’t all that un-pleased.

About then I decided to do a bore swab and then switch over to the single box of Mini-Mag© ammunition that I had been able to purchase. I moved to the classic fifty-foot range that NRA Rim-fire Three position Matches are shot at.

The cleaning was a nightmare but using Hoppe’s Elite the fouling from the Remington solid lead ammunition finally cleared the lands and grooves. I checked the tightness of the rings on the scope and the main stock bolt as well as the barrel band screw. Yes, both needed a little bit of help. That’s the way things are with new rifles so I didn’t have a worry in the world beyond the looming thunderheads rolling in from the Big Horns.

Target Number One was a U.S. Army fifty foot qualification Small Bore Rifle Target. Ammunition was CCI Brand© Target and plinking Forty grain ammunition at a rated 1235 Feet Per-Second. I put five down the spout from a rest at the upper Zeroing Bull’s-eye. Fairly tight group centered on the three ring at the six o’clock. Adjusted and fired another five round set, and they were on the nine ring at ‘noon! The groups were so tight that I wondered if I had completely missed two of the shots! Then I shot the Bull’s…

One through ten. I was not a happy camper. Anyone can blow a shot at anytime. That is why it is called marksmanship after all. Let’s just say that if I would have been shooting for qualification any Range Officer worth the title would have pulled me from the line. Sheer fact is, he / she would have been more than justified. I was pretty shaken… I gathered up all the toys, and headed home.

I fired up the Internet and looked around for clues. I was in a near frantic state when? Lo, and behold! Yahoo Instant Messenger popped up. It was Brother Bear! We talked, actually typed, and started going over things. I had the rifle in my hands as we checked things over. I had already scrubbed the barrel, and looked at the muzzle thinking I needed the thing re-crowned. Good grief! Things were loose, and torqued in a way that so that a lot went cock-eyed once things, such as the barrel got hot!

Two days later I headed back out to the range. Things were better. At fifty feet all the bullets dropped into the seven ring or better. Can you say “Sharpshooter?” Yes, you could, but neither bear nor I was satisfied. We talked, and decided that that God Awful trigger had to be a big part of the lack of consistency. Like most people that enjoy the shooting sports I am more than willing to blame myself for any performance failure well before I will lay blame to the tool in my hands. The least of all when it comes to Ruger© firearms entire product line of excellence, in producing rifles, shotguns, and yes, pistols as well.

Where do we go from there? Well? Brother Bear told me to send him the trigger action, as a swap. He worked his magic on a trigger group that he had and sent that to me. The results were almost beyond belief!

The Bolt release actually works as it should! The trigger is smooth as a new born baby’s butt. The magazine drops like it is supposed to. And the groups are now working on one hundred yards. Not to mention that the bolt hold open feature, actually does work!

Having talked or otherwise contacted some very respected and qualified gunsmiths I wholly support, and recommend StalkingBearArms© if you, like myself, and so many others absolutely love shooting the Ruger 10/22.

It is rumored, by the way, that he works similar miracles on Remington 870© Shotguns (12 gauge only). We shall soon see!

DOW OFFERS GRANT MONEY FOR SHOOTING RANGE IMPROVEMENTS

October 19, 2009

DENVER, Colo.–The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) is initiating a new grant program to provide funding for shooting ranges and shooting areas in Colorado.  The goal of the grant program is to increase public recreational shooting opportunities for hunter education, marksmanship training, youth shooting opportunities and other recreational shooting throughout the state.

The DOW Shooting Range Grant funding may be used for creating new shooting ranges and shooting areas, as well as to enhance existing ranges and shooting areas.

The grant funding will come from a combination of DOW cash funds from sale of sportsman licenses or federal funds from Section 10 of the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Programs Improvement Act of 2000.

The DOW anticipates making up to a total of $500,000 available for this program beginning with the state fiscal year that began July 1, 2009.  Applicants will be required to provide a minimum of 25% of their request in the form of funding or “in-kind” contribution as matching funds for federal funds.

Applications will be accepted for ranges that will be of a substantive public benefit. Substantive public benefit is considered to be: Enhancing the DOW Hunter Education Program opportunities; Expanding shooting opportunities for the general public; and Enhancing opportunities for youth mentoring programs.

Landowners, local governments, DOW, other state and federal agencies and organized shooting/sportsman and youth organizations are eligible for grant consideration.  Ranges that provide opportunities for hunter education classes and fulfillment of the live fire requirement in obtaining a hunting license, ranges closer to high population centers, and ranges that provide a broad range of shooting opportunities will receive a higher ranking during the review and approval process.

During the initial year of this program, the deadline for application submittal is Dec. 31, 2009. For details and further information visit the DOW Web site at (www.wildlife.state.co.us/hunting/resources) or contact the DOW Grant Program Shooting Range Grant Coordinator, Larry Strohl (303-291-7346) larry.strohl@state.co.us.

Obamacare = Anti Liberty and Freedom

October 9, 2009

You heard it here first!  Obamacare (caps only for grammar purpose’s) The devil, is ALWAYS in the details! Well, the details are starting to roll in, and, as I warned. The obamacare assault on personal freedom and liberty will be a back door attempt at gun control.

Recently, a good friend and fellow bloger has gotten into a spitting match with a Texas Mayor. I have refrained from commenting, as I intend to allow this…. So-called Gun Rights supporter to spew enough rope to hang His-self… And? You knew it was coming! 😀

Most of the comments at my friends website, as well as at a local MSM outlet call for enforcement of all existing laws… Friends, Americans, Liberty Countrymen across the world!

I call for fewer laws that restrict any persons ability to defend themselves…

I call for the repeal of laws that take away anyone’s unalienable rights save conviction of classic felony’s or demonstrated mental incompetence. No more Lautenberg, period. He is a proved traitor to his oath to uphold our Constitution. No more Schumer; he is Lautenberg’s Page. No more Pelosi. We are not her grandchildren. Ex post facto law is immoral, and I don’t give a damn if the Supreme Court endorsed it being the cowards that they are. The list goes on, but those are the main players in the drum roll to abolish freedom and liberty. Not just here, but world wide. The obaminaion is their lap dog.

ObamaCare Could be Used to Ban Guns in Home Self-Defense
— Important vote to occur on Tuesday

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus has something to say to gun owners:  “Own a gun; lose your coverage!”

Baucus’ socialized health care bill comes up for a Finance Committee vote on Tuesday.  We have waited and waited and waited for the shifty Baucus to release legislative language.  But he has refused to release anything but a summary — and we will never have a Congressional Budget Office cost assessment based on actual legislation.  Even the summary was kept secret for a long time.

But, on the basis of the summary, the Baucus bill (which is still unnumbered) tells us virtually nothing about what kind of policy Americans will be required to purchase under penalty of law — nor the consequences.  It simply says:

* “all U.S. citizens and legal residents would be required to purchase coverage through (1) the individual market…”;

* “individuals would be required to report on their federal income tax return the months for which they maintain the required minimum health coverage…”;

* in addition to an extensive list of statutorily mandated coverage, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius would be empowered to “define and update the categories of treatments, items, and services…” within an insurance plan which would be covered in a policy constituting “required minimum health coverage.”

ObamaCare and gun control

It is nearly certain that coverage prescribed by the administration will, to control costs, exclude coverage for what it regards as excessively dangerous activities.  And, given Sebelius’ well-established antipathy to the Second Amendment — she vetoed concealed carry legislation as governor of Kansas — we presume she will define these dangerous activities to include hunting and self-defense using a firearm.  It is even possible that the Obama-prescribed policy could preclude reimbursement of any kind in a household which keeps a loaded firearm for self-defense.

The ObamaCare bill already contains language that will punish Americans who engage in unhealthy behavior by allowing insurers to charge them higher insurance premiums.  (What constitutes an unhealthy lifestyle is, of course, to be defined by legislators.)  Don’t be surprised if an anti-gun nut like Sebelius uses this line of thinking to impose ObamaCare policies which result in a back-door gun ban on any American who owns “dangerous” firearms.

After all, insurers already (and routinely) drop homeowners from their policies for owning certain types of guns or for refusing to use trigger locks (that is, for keeping their guns ready for self-defense!).  While not all insurers practice this anti-gun behavior, Gun Owners of America has documented that some do — Prudential and State Farm being two of the most well-known.

The good news is that because homeowner insurance is private (and is still subject to the free market) you can go to another company if one drops you.  But what are you going to do under nationalized ObamaCare when the regulations written by Secretary Sebelius suspend the applicability of your government-mandated policy because of your gun ownership?

All of this is in addition to something that GOA has been warning you about for several months … the certainty that minimum acceptable policies will dump your gun information into a federal database … a certainty that is reinforced by language in the summary providing for a study to “encourage increased meaningful use of electronic health records.”

Remember, the federal government has already denied more than 150,000 military veterans the right to own guns, without their being convicted of a crime or receiving any due process of law.  They were denied because of medical information (such as PTSD) that the FBI later determined disqualified these veterans to own guns.

Is this what we need on a national level being applied to every gun owner in America?

Incidentally, failure to comply would subject the average family to $1,500 in fines — and possibly more for a household with older teens.  And, although a Schumer amendment purports to exempt Americans from prison sentences for non-purchase of an ObamaPolicy — something which was never at issue — it doesn’t prohibit them from being sent to prison for a year and fined an additional $25,000 under the Internal Revenue Code for non-payment of the initial fines.

ACTION:  Contact your two U.S. Senators.  Ask him or her, in the strongest terms, to vote against the phony Baucus bill.

You can use the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center at http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm to send your senators the pre-written e-mail message below.

—– Pre-written letter —–

Dear Senator:

You already know that the phony Baucus bill:

* Is predicated on $283 billion in phony “cuts” which have never, never ever been realized since a similar commitment to cut Medicare costs in the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 — and will never, never ever be realized under the Baucus bill;

* Requires massive numbers of Americans to have government-approved insurance which the CBO predicts will be more expensive than current policies;

* Refuses to provide a cost for these policies, making it almost certain that more and more Americans will find insurance beyond their reach;

* Has no legislative language and nothing but a CBO “guesstimate” of the cost and benefits, based on a summary.

On the basis of the summary, the Baucus bill tells us virtually nothing about what kind of policy Americans will be required to purchase under penalty of law — nor the consequences.  It does say that the “Secretary of HHS [Kathleen Sebelius] would be required to define and update the categories of treatments, items, and services…” within an insurance plan which would be covered in a policy constituting “required minimum health coverage.”

This could spell trouble for gun owners.

It is nearly certain that coverage prescribed by the administration will, to control costs, exclude coverage for what it regards as excessively dangerous activities.  And, given Sebelius’ well-established antipathy to the Second Amendment — she vetoed concealed carry legislation as governor of Kansas — I presume she will define these dangerous activities to include hunting and self-defense using a firearm.  It is even possible that the Obama-prescribed policy could preclude reimbursement of any kind in a household which keeps a loaded firearm for self-defense.

This is, of course, in addition to the certainty that minimum acceptable policies will dump my gun information into a federal database — a certainty that is reinforced by language in the summary providing for a study to “encourage increased meaningful use of electronic health records.”

Please oppose the Baucus bill.

Sincerely,

Living with Wildlife: Elk Rut in Estes Park

October 9, 2009

If ever a town could be called a tourist trap Estes Park would be the poster child of any marketing class. Nevertheless it does have its attractions. Watch, and enjoy this thrilling piece dealing with the elk rut. Many other very good videos are located HERE as well. Managing wildlife encounters has become a way of life for the people of Colorado, as well as the DOW.

America’s Top 20 Trophy Elk Counties

October 9, 2009

I’ve been blessed living in Colorado and Wyoming in many ways. Not the least of which would be the excellent hunting offered in both states. What of the history involving what is my favorite big game species? As in big racks, not the spiritual connection with nature when one is out in the wilds.

Read on

MISSOULA, Mont.—America’s top 20 trophy elk counties have produced a combined 602 record-book bulls, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has invested millions to keep habitat in those counties in top condition.

Elk Foundation projects in trophy counties have included prescribed burns, treating noxious weeds and thinning overgrown forests to enhance forage for elk and other wildlife, restoring riparian zones, constructing wildlife drinkers, brokering land deals that improve public access, many kinds of research, public and youth education, and more “all funded primarily through our network of volunteers and system of fundraising events,” said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO.

Of course, RMEF funds identical projects all across elk country, not just top trophy counties. Nationwide, at a cost of over $448 million, RMEF has completed 6,371 projects that have protected or enhanced more than 5.6 million acres. The effort has helped U.S. elk populations grow by over 40 percent since 1984.

Trophy statistics below were compiled from Boone and Crockett Club (B&C) records. The club recognizes four categories of elk records. Those categories, along with their respective minimum scores for inclusion in B&C all-time records, are: American typical elk—375, American non-typical elk—385, Roosevelt’s elk—290, and tule elk—285.

Here are America’s top 20 trophy elk counties with RMEF conservation activities*:

NEWLY-CREATED ANDRICK PONDS STATE WILDLIFE AREA OPENING TO PUBLIC

September 30, 2009

DENVER, Colo. — Colorado sportsmen have a new 710-acre state wildlife area just southwest of Jackson Lake in Morgan County. The purchase of Andrick Ponds, the former Centennial Hunt Club, was finalized on August 28.  A portion of the property will be open for limited waterfowl hunting between October 3 and November 30th, on Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays, and holidays. Four areas will be open beginning October 3, with several more opening November 7th.

The former hunt club was purchased using Habitat Stamp and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) funds.

“This will be a jewel of a wildlife area for waterfowl hunters,” said Steve Yamashita, Northeast Regional Manager. “This fall, hunting will be limited to waterfowl for a portion of the season. The property has great habitat for small game, turkeys, and deer, as well, and future opportunities can be expected as we open other parts of the property.”

The purchase of the property comes as part of the Divisions efforts to address sportsmen’s requests for more hunting and fishing access throughout the state and additional waterfowl properties.

Hunters wishing to make reservations for waterfowl hunting can call the Division’s hunting reservation system at 1-800-846-9453 beginning Wednesday, September 30, 2009.  Additional information on the reservation system can be found at http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/SmallGame/Reservations/.

The property will be formally dedicated on October 24, 2009. Look for additional information on this event and other wildlife news by signing up for the DOW Insider at http://wildlife.state.co.us/NewsMedia/DOWInsider/.

Ammunition Salesman of the year award!

September 24, 2009

As noted here on this blog, and picked up as a cliche across the internet and even a few MSM outlets Barack Obama is Gun Salesman of the year. Now, we are happy to tag him as “Ammunition Salesman of the Year” as well. For all the destruction of the American economy that he has heaped onto this nation there are two portions of the economy that are doing quite well. Firearms sales, and ammunition! Now, that is economic stimulus that really has meaning!

NEW ORLEANS — Bullet-makers are working around the clock, seven days a week, and still can’t keep up with the nation’s demand for ammunition.

Shooting ranges, gun dealers and bullet manufacturers say they have never seen such shortages. Bullets, especially for handguns, have been scarce for months because gun enthusiasts are stocking up on ammo, in part because they fear President Barack Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress will pass antigun legislation – even though nothing specific has been proposed and the president last month signed a law allowing people to carry loaded guns in national parks.

Gun sales spiked when it became clear Obama would be elected a year ago and purchases continued to rise in his first few months of office. The FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System reported that 6.1 million background checks for gun sales were issued from January to May, an increase of 25.6 percent from the same period the year before.

NEW SWA IN GMU 49: Colorado Hunting

September 18, 2009

BUENA VISTA, Colo. – Colorado has a new State Wildlife Area in Chaffee County.

Chubb Park Ranch State Wildlife Area is located approximately nine miles northeast of Buena Vista on Highway 24/285.  Joseph and Arlene Cogan, whose family has been ranching in Chaffee County since 1889, own the 507-acre ranch.  They have agreed to open their ranch to public hunting as part of a perpetual conservation easement.

The conservation easement was jointly financed by the Colorado Division of Wildlife, Trust for Public Lands, Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas, Great Outdoors Colorado, Chaffee County, and a donation from the Cogan family.

Chubb Park Ranch SWA is comprised of a blend of mountain grassland habitat, creeks, and forest habitat.  It provides critical elk winter range.

“The purpose of this project is to protect the conservation values of Chubb Park Ranch in perpetuity and allow public access for hunting,” said Division of Wildlife Regional Manager Dan Prenzlow.  “It will protect 84 acres of riparian habitat, 12 acres of forested habitat, over 400 acres of sagebrush/grassland habitat, as well as important winter range for elk.”

The conservation easement also protects nearly 2.8 acres of stream frontage, including portions of Trout Creek, as well as some of the smaller tributaries to both Trout and Chubb Creeks, although the access easement is for hunting only.

Prenzlow said the agreement would also preserve historic ranching practices, habitat for non-game wildlife, and invaluable scenic vistas including a fantastic viewscape from Hwy. 9 to Buffalo Peaks.

The conservation easement preserves valuable habitat as a wildlife corridor between surrounding State Land Board land and the San Isabel National Forest.

The perpetual access easement allows the public to hunt the Chubb Park Ranch.  Access to the 507 acre ranch also enhances access to the existing 3,640 acre Chubb Park State Land Board parcel which is open to hunting as part of the State Trust Lands Program.

The DOW is a co-grantee on this perpetual conservation easement with the Land Trust of the Upper Arkansas.

The property is located in Game Management Unit 49.

Cass Sunstein: Liberal Nutcase in a position of power!

September 14, 2009

Something tells me that this elitist known as Cass Sunstein is going to become an ongoing theme here. Time will tell, but it sure looks that way. He stands for just about everything everyday Americans dislike, and he appears to hate the things that those same Americans love. Maybe I should add a new category? Czar Wars?

Sales of firearms in the United States have skyrocketed since November 4, 2008.   It’s no secret the election of Barrack Obama to the highest office in the free world caused grave concern among gun owners.

Liberals scoff at the notion that Obama would attempt to disarm the United States population.   However, this is the man who can be heard in an address to a group in San Francisco on a clandestine recording say, in reference to rural America, “…they cling to their guns and their religion.”

Perhaps Obama isn’t making any speeches about disrupting the lifestyle of rural America these days, but he’s certainly putting people in place to do it for him.    The number one candidate for that kind of hit work on sportsmen in the United States is Cass Sunstein.   Sunstein is a professor from Harvard University, who formerly worked with Obama at the University of Chicago.  He’s now tapped to become head of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.

Sunstein’s nomination raises the hackles of sportsmen’s groups nationwide.    He’s widely known for a blatant disdain for the Second Amendment.   He’s even more passionate about animal rights, so much so, he advocates the rights of animals to be granted protected status in the nation’s courts.   More to the point, he believes animals should have the right to sue people.   He’s on the record in favor of an end to all hunting.

A few short years ago, people like Sunstein existed, but rarely were in positions of power.  They were people who took such amazingly over the top positions, but were generally regarded as freakish and weird.  Such is the danger of the Obama appointment.  If confirmed as “Regulatory Czar” to the White House, Sunstein would become the gatekeeper for White House policy for the Department of the Interior, Department of Agriculture, FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.   A man who’s an avowed hater of hunting and guns would be writing the fine print in the Obama Administration’s policies for how those federal agencies would create rules and restrictions.

Wondering how that affects you?

The FBI and ATF are the key agencies who deal with albeit limited regulation of firearms ownership.  There is still the Second Amendment.  However, they conduct the instant background checks and make the decision on whether you are of legal status to buy a gun—or not.

Moreover, the oversight with Department of the Interior is vast.  The agency controls millions of acres of public lands now open for hunting.  How long it will last under such leadership is a mystery.   The National Park Service falls under Interior’s purview.  Already, the Obama Administration has moved toward removing all lead bullets and fishing tackle from Park Service property.   Presently regulation covers Park Service employees only, but there’s a clear desire by higher ups to extend such restrictions to public users.

Where does this end?    Coalitions of sportsmen and conservation groups have teamed to battle Sunstein’s confirmation in the Senate.  The US Sportsman’s Alliance and National Wild Turkey Federation are leading the charge and lobbying heavily on the Congressional Sportsman’s Caucus to close ranks and oppose the nomination.  Those two groups are backed by a host of other organizations who convinced one Senator, Republican Johnny Isackson of Georgia, to push for a “hold” on the nomination.

The Congressional Sportsman’s Caucus is a coalition of Congressional members, both Democrat and Republican, who align themselves in defense of issues threatening hunting, fishing, trapping, shooting, and other such activities.  Sadly, the CSC’s clout appears to be withering.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid staged a vote, over the objections of those constituency groups, to end debate of Sunstein’s nomination.    Twenty-two of the 63 Senators who voted in favor of cutting off debate were members of the Congressional Sportsman’s Caucus, including U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia.   Senator Robert Byrd is not a member of the CSC, but also voted in favor of ending debate and moving the nomination forward.

“We are disappointed with the outcome of tonight’s vote, especially that so many members of the Senate claiming to be pro-sportsman voted in favor of a nominee who has expressed that recreational hunting could be banned,” stated USSA President and CEO Bud Pidgeon through a press release.  “Nonetheless, the USSA and our partners had an obligation to fight this appointment. Sportsmen all across America will clearly be able to see which senators, along with Sen. Isakson, were willing to stand up for them.”

Sunstein doesn’t have the job yet, but this week’s vote was a strong indication he’s looking more and more likely to be the man wielding power over rules governing hunting, fishing, and firearms ownership in the near future.  If confirmed, he would answer only to his boss, President Obama and not to the millions of sportsmen and women across the United States.

Still wondering why the firearms industry has been thriving while the rest of nation’s industries have been stalled amid the recession?

update to the story; I believe that this whack job was in fact confirmed.
