NOVICE HUNTER INSTRUCTIONAL CLINICS

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Local wildlife conservation groups are teaming up with the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) to offer some exciting FREE clinics for beginning hunters. The seminars were developed following the success of a ‘Turkey Hunting 101’ seminar that was offered by the National Wild Turkey Federation this past spring.

The local committee of the Colorado Mule Deer Association will be hosting a free ‘Mule Deer Hunting 101’ clinic on Monday, Aug. 24 at the DOW Grand Junction Hunter Education Building at 711 Independent Ave. Class participants will be treated to a free barbecue beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the mule deer class beginning at 7 p.m. The clinic will cover a variety of topics including mule deer biology and habits, hunting strategies, equipment, and local deer hunting opportunities. The Colorado Mule Deer Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving the mule deer and its habitat.

The local committee of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will be hosting a free ‘Elk Hunting 101’ clinic on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the DOW Grand Junction Hunter Education Building at 711 Independent Ave. The clinic will begin at 6 p.m. and will cover topics including elk biology and habits, hunting strategies, equipment, and local elk hunting opportunities.  The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving the Rocky Mountain elk and its habitat.

The local committee of Ducks Unlimited will be hosting a free ‘Waterfowl Hunting 101’ clinic on Friday, Sept. 25 at the DOW Grand Junction Hunter Education Building at 711 Independent Ave. The clinic will begin at 6 p.m. and will cover topics including waterfowl identification and biology, hunting strategies, equipment, and local waterfowl hunting opportunities. Ducks Unlimited is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of waterfowl and their habitat. The local Ducks Unlimited committee also offers a free youth waterfowl clinic and guided hunt in the Grand Valley.

All hunting clinics are limited to 40 participants and preregistration is required.  These hunting clinics are designed for novice hunters. For more information about the clinics and to register please call the DOW Education Office at (970) 255-6181.

Ritters Gun Tax: unalienable right to be taxed

Someday I will understand the whole “permit” and “taxing” or “fees” for unalienable rights by governments large and small.

Please don’t misunderstand me. As I do support the various taxes on fishing and hunting gear that support the sports. But back door registration schemes as taxes..? Read on, and contact your Colorado State representatives.

Though this idea has been rejected by both Republican and Democrat controlled legislatures, Ritter now claims it will bring $500 million to state coffers.
“The Governor’s office is using estimates for firearms purchases based on recent purchase numbers, and it highly inflates the number,” said the Dudley Brown, the Executive Director of the largest pro-gun organization in Colorado, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners.  Since the election of Barack Obama the number of firearms sales have skyrocketed across the nation.
“But even with a smaller number, he’s forcing citizens who practice a constitutionally protected right to pay a tax first, much like the old Jim Crow laws,” said Brown.  “We don’t believe gun owners should have to ask permission to buy a firearm in the first place, and we’re now supposed to pay for their gun control?”
Colorado uses a “Baby Brady” Registration system system to check purchasers’ backgrounds.  This puts gun owners in double jeopardy, since they must go through the FBI check as well as that of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.  If Colorado’s Brady Act was repealed, the FBI would conduct Brady Registration Checks, which wouldn’t cost Colorado citizens and would shorten the wait time to 30 seconds — as opposed to CBI checks, which often take hours.
“Now, Governor Ritter wants to put a tax on that registration as well.  He might just as well repeal our State Constitution’s protections,” said Brown, “since they don’t seem to matter to him.”
Colorado’s Brady Act was passed in 2000 under a Republican-controlled legislature and Governor.

GLADE PARK DEER AND ELK MEETINGS


GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) is interested in hearing from the public about management of big game herds in and around Glade Park. Public input is critical in helping revise herd management plans, called Data Analysis Unit or DAU plans. DAU plans establish herd population objectives and set goals for male-female ratios within populations.

Interested members of the public are invited to attend a DAU planning meeting for deer and elk in Game Management Unit 40. In order to maximize the public’s opportunity to comment, these meetings will be held at the following times and locations:

Wednesday, Aug. 19, Mesa County Fairgrounds, Sagebrush Room, 6:30 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 20, Glade Park Community Bldg., 6:30 p.m.

Deer DAU D-18 and Elk DAU E-19 cover the Glade Park herds, which occupy the area east of the Utah state line, south of the Colorado River and north and west of Highway 141. The area includes Glade Park, the McInnis Canyons NCA, the Colorado National Monument and the west side of Unaweep Canyon. The DAU plans will guide management in Game Management Unit 40, which is known for producing quality buck and bull hunting opportunities.

“Herd size is a function of biology, but it is also a function of what the public desires for a population,” added Ron Velarde, regional manager for northwest Colorado. “While the DOW is well-suited to make biological decisions, we need public input to determine if larger or smaller herds would be acceptable.”

Sportsmen, outfitters, business owners and landowners all have a vested interest in the big game populations in an area. Sportsmen may want larger herds for increased hunting opportunity or male-female ratios that create bigger bucks but less hunting opportunity. Outfitters and hunting-tourism dependent businesses like hotels and restaurants may want increased hunting opportunity that brings more hunters to an area. Landowners may want decreased herd sizes to limit damage to crops and fences. Large landowners may also want herd gender ratios that promote bigger bucks and result in more desirable private land licenses.

DAU plans are based on wildlife management principles and public input and are revised approximately every 10 years. To aid the public in discussion, several management alternatives will be presented at the public meetings. The alternatives cover increasing or decreasing overall herd size and male-female ratios or leaving the populations and gender ratios at their current levels. The benefits and drawbacks to each alternative will be presented.

New anti-gun strategy: Demonize CCW holders

The Examiners are turning out to be a very decent group. Even the ones that I don’t agree with. Now, if they would just let me have a general outdoors column… In any case, this reminds me a lot of a blogger that used to hang out at The Liberty News Forum. He is well stated, and backs up what he says.

Bigotry assumes many forms, hides behind many facades, but always it is the same; the social demonization of entire groups, classes or races of people in an effort to make them appear inferior and detrimental by their very existence.

In the wake of a nasty multiple shooting at a Pittsburgh, PA-area fitness club by a not-so-clearly psychotic man identified as George Sodini, America’s gun prohibitionists – led by the Violence Policy Center and Freedom States Alliance – are clamoring for restrictions or repeal of concealed carry statutes.
In the case against legally-armed citizens, the VPC has even manufactured an innuendo-riddled “study” to support their prejudices. My colleague, Cleveland Gun Rights Examiner Daniel White, writes about the shooting here.
Their hardly subliminal argument appears to be that citizens licensed to carry concealed handguns for personal protection are a threat to the community. This contention is based on six shooting incidents over the past couple of years in which the gunman had, or apparently had, a carry permit.

A 39-year-old Ypsilanti man used his concealed weapon and his experience in the Lebanese army to stop an alleged bank robber.

Meanwhile, proponents of public disarmament haven’t said a thing about the estimated five million other citizens who are licensed to carry, and haven’t harmed anybody. There hasn’t been a peep from the gun prohibition lobby about the armed citizen who shot a convenience store robber in Virginia recently, heading off a bloodbath.
Nor have the gun grabbers mentioned the incident a week ago in Topeka, KS in which a legally-armed store clerk fended off two robbers at closing time. Self-defense Examiner Eric Puryear wrote about that incident here.
And you never heard applause from the hoplophobes – about whom I wrote the other day – after an Ypsilanti, MI man named Nabil Fawzi last year intervened in a bank robbery, did you?
An employee with a concealed carry license used his handgun to defend himself and stop a pair of criminals who tried to rob his shop.
Instead, what we get from the gun prohibitionists is a steady diet of fear mongering with but one purpose: The stripping of a fundamental civil right to keep and bear arms so that we lose our ability to exercise that most basic of human rights, that of self-preservation.
Nowadays, about the only form of acceptable overt social bigotry is against gun owners. The gun bigots argue that when one person with a gun does something heinous, all gun owners are expected to bear responsibility, and surrender their rights as though it would undo the crime.
Before the armed citizen, it was the owners of .50-caliber rifles who were likened to terrorists and cop-killers. Next week or next month, who will the prohibitionists smear in their effort to promote public hatred of fellow citizens whose only “crime” is that they exercise a constitutionally-protected civil right?
The VPC and Freedom States crowd would have us all believe that every armed citizen is just like George Sodini, and that he is like all of us; a killer waiting to strike.
While they are loathe to admit it, there is really no difference between gun bigots and racial or religious bigots. One form of class hatred is no less divisive than another.

WATERFOWL REGULATIONS FOR 2009

COMMISSION TO FINALIZE WATERFOWL REGULATIONS FOR 2009 SEASON AT AUGUST WORKSHOP IN FRISCO

FRISCO, Colo. – The Commission will finalize 2009 waterfowl season dates and bag limits and will hear public comment on the five-Year Review of the Big Game Season Structure at its August 10th workshop in Frisco.

The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. at the Holiday Inn – Summit County, 1129 North Summit Boulevard.

The Commission will consider amending 2009 waterfowl and migratory bird hunting seasons for the Pacific and Central Flyway portions of Colorado including season dates and bag and possession limits. Federal regulations have set more liberal parameters for the Commission to consider. Possible Central Flyway changes include: Allowing for pintails and canvasbacks to be taken during the entire season instead of just the first 39 days with a daily bag limit of one bird per species and also allowing for a daily bag limit of three wood ducks instead of two.

In the Pacific Flyway, the Commission will have the option to allow for a daily bag limit of one canvasback, two pintails instead of one and allowing for a daily bag limit of three scaup instead of two, during the first 86 days of the season.

The Commission maintains the ability to keep regulations more restrictive than federal regulations, and is therefore not required to make these changes.

Division of Wildlife staff will also present the Commission with draft guidelines and alternatives for the 2010-2014 big game Season Structure. Limited Elk Game Management Unit nominations will be included in this presentation.

The Commission will hear public comment on the Five-Year Review of Big Game Season Structure agenda item at all meetings and workshops during the process. Anyone who would like to comment is asked to fill out a “blue sheet” –Request to Speak Before the Wildlife Commission – and give it to any Division of Wildlife staff. Comment may be given on any aspect, but will be most effective if directed at the portion of the Big Game Season Structure topic being discussed at that meeting. The time of testimony may be limited by the Commission chair. The usual time limit is three minutes. The Commission is scheduled to finalize the 2010-2014 Big Game Season Structure at its September 2009 meeting.

Drafts of the Middle Park Deer Management Plan (D-9, GMU’s 18, 27, 28, 37, 181 and 371) and the State Bridge Deer Management Plan (D-8, GMU’s 15, 35, 36 and 45) will be presented to the Commission by Division staff.

Constituents can listen to Commission meetings and workshops through the Division’s Web site. This opportunity is provided to keep constituents better informed about the development of regulations by the Commission and how they and Division staff are resolving issues facing Colorado’s wildlife.

BLUE MESA FISHERY MANAGEMENT ISSUES

NEW DOW WEB PAGE EXPLAINS BLUE MESA FISHERY MANAGEMENT ISSUES

GUNNISON, Colo. — Starting in late October, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is planning to remove some lake trout from Blue Mesa Reservoir to help restore balance to the fishery. To respond to anglers’ questions about fishery management regarding kokanee salmon and trout at the reservoir, a new information page is available in the fishing section at the DOW web site, http://wildlife.state.co.us/Fishing.

“There is a lot of interest in this issue and we want to make sure people understand our management plans,” said John Alves, senior aquatic biologist for the DOW’s southwest region. “Anglers can submit questions through the Q and A section of the web page and we’ll provide answers that will be posted. Rather than responding to every question the DOW is receiving individually, the web site will allow more immediate feedback for our constituents and will let everyone see the answers.”

The DOW is planning to remove some lake trout that are 30 inches and smaller in size. Larger fish will be released.

DOW officials stated previously that 5,000 lake trout might be removed. However, because the DOW has never removed fish from the reservoir, no target number will be used this year. Biologists will be working to locate fish and test removal techniques during the first year. Population monitoring work for the salmon and trout, as always, will be conducted during the spring and summer.

“We have a lot to learn and we’ll be going slowly this fall,” Alves said. “We’ll know a lot more next summer after we evaluate the removal operation and the spring population monitoring work.”

Blue Mesa Reservoir, located west of Gunnison, is a very productive fishery and the primary water for kokanee salmon production in the state. Production of kokanee salmon has always been the No. 1 priority for the fishery and will continue to be. The reservoir, however, is home to a growing population of lake trout — predator fish that are contributing to the decline in the kokanee population. Rainbow trout survival is also falling due to lake trout predation. At the same time, based on findings from annual netting surveys, the overall body condition of lake trout is declining because competition for food among the fish is increasing.

“We’re losing kokanee and we’re losing the potential for long-term production of trophy-sized lake trout,” Alves said. “The DOW’s strategy is aimed at maintaining a highly productive kokanee fishery, a good rainbow trout fishery and a viable trophy lake trout fishery. Without a strong population of kokanee salmon there is no possibility of growing lake trout to trophy size. There is room for all the species in the lake, but careful management is necessary.”

The situation at Blue Mesa is also a problem for 26 other lakes and reservoirs in Colorado that depend on stocked kokanee salmon raised from eggs produced at the reservoir. Blue Mesa provides about 60 percent of the eggs needed to stock 10 million kokanee fingerlings in the Colorado waters each year. Stocking of kokanee statewide will likely be reduced if the annual spawn take at Blue Mesa continues to decline. The value of kokanee fishing in Colorado is valued at $29 million annually.

Triggering The Vote!

With each election, Americans go to the polls and make decisions that affect — for better or worse — the future of freedom in America.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 72 percent (142 million) of the eligible voting age citizen population (197 million) were registered to vote in 2004. This means that as many as 55 million people were eligible to vote, but unregistered — and therefore did not participate in the November 2004 elections.

Far too many gun owners and hunters are among them. And every year, millions of teenagers turn 18, thus becoming eligible to register and vote. Many of them have spent their formative years learning hunting and shooting skills, and could be expected to pay attention to NRA’s message.

Now, NRA-ILA has created a new affiliate, the NRA Freedom Action Foundation (NRA-FAF), which focuses on nonpartisan voter registration and citizen education.  The NRA-FAF has been recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt charity under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Donations are fully deductible.

This campaign has deployed a new approach to reach the younger generation, using new social media outlets. It will also use traditional methods of outreach including TV, radio and direct mail.

Moose Loose in Broomfield!

I spent five and a half years at Broomfield Ambulance, and never did I hear anything like this come over the radio! An occasional bear maybe, but a Moose!

BROOMFIELD — Officials with the Colorado Division of Wildlife spent Wednesday afternoon tracking down a female moose that wandered into the city.

The moose was spotted near West 152nd Avenue and Bannock Street. The area is an isolated part of Broomfield near the junction of Interstate 25 and the Northwest Parkway.

The moose wandered around the area and by 4:30 p.m. had made a bed in what appeared to be a drainage ditch near Huron Street.

Three DOW officers were on the scene. They weren’t planning on moving her.

“Right now, our direction is just to monitor it and make sure it doesn’t get too close to the highway,” district wildlife manager Vicki Vargas-Madrid said.

Because the moose was bedding down, the officers were unable to estimate her size or age.

DOW Women Afield Cast & Blast Clinic Slated for Silverthorne‏

DOW WOMEN AFIELD CAST & BLAST CLINIC SLATED FOR SILVERTHORNE

SILVERTHORNE, Colo.–The Colorado Division of Wildlife Women Afield program is sponsoring a Cast & Blast Clinic for women on Saturday, August 8 in Silverthorne.

Cast & Blast clinics are designed for women who want to learn to fly fish and to shoot a shotgun. The clinic runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m and is for women only.

Participants spend the day with other women while learning and practicing shooting and fishing techniques. No prior experience or equipment required. Participants are asked to participate for the entire clinic.

California Politics, it’s not just the budget

More than thirty years ago I left my birth state because things like no work, huge taxes, and what I considered to be corruption in favor of special interest groups was destroying what once was a very decent place to live, and raise a family.

Those special interest groups played the race card, the union card, and the gender card most often, but there were other things as well. So now, what was once the sixth largest economy in the entire world (if memory serves me correctly) is broke financially. Not to mention morally, and no, I’m not talking about bikini clad women and Hollywood. I’m talking about a refusal to honor what had been one of the strongest individual rights state constitutions in the union. Look at the flag of California, it says California Republic. That concept has been denigrated by social “progressives” and the politically correct. What has happened to California will be coming to your state soon if that sort of thing is allowed to continue. This is something for any and all to be thinking about today, Independence Day 2009.

Ever since I’ve lived here (23years) I’ve noticed a couple things that I always thought would ruin a great state.
1. An over abundance of Mexican Nationals. (OK I’ll wait for the gasp and the cries of Racist……Done yet?.. Ok lets move on)

The reason I say that is, when you get such a culture switch as California has endured over the past 30 years, you end up with an area that resembles what the immigrants left. Take a look at LA. Mayor Antonio Villiaragosa is as corrupt as any politician in Mexico. Look at the education system, the health care system of California is a clear cut case of a good idea entrapped by corruption. in 1986 Reagan granted Amnesty to the Illegal Immigrants that were here already with a promise to curb the flood of future illegals. That didn’t happen, so now we have the “Original Illegals” that have MULTIPLIED and destroyed what little infrastructure was left, including Education, and Health-Care. On top of that we have the next generation of illegal’s waiting for Obama to grant Amnesty,  so they can follow in the foot steps of their forefathers….Now; for the first time in my life I am very worried for our nation. I honestly believe we are headed down the road to ruin.

When the IOU’s quit being honored, possibly as soon as July 11th, there will be an explosion in California that will have consequences from coast to coast. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of nutjobs to go around in this state, and they are ALL NOT MEXICAN, but if you look at a few undeniable stats like “Welfare recipients” and “Prison racial breakdowns” as well as education statistics. Facts are facts. Look it up. Look at the hispanic UPTICK that corresponds with the state “Downturn”. Look at who raises the biggest stink when there is mention of school performance measures… They say it’s not fair, it’s because the classes are too big, or whatever….ITS THE EXPLOSION IN MEXICAN NATIONALS that has created that “Environment”…

I am not being racist because I notice the obvious, if you are offended it’s because you are in denial of the obvious.

So you ask how do you fix it? Let me tell you how easy it is. YOU QUIT MAKING IT EASY! Americans are people that overcome hardship, Americans are people that deal with things, find sollutions and get better, Americans USED to do that. NOW in California, if you don’t speak english, we make it easy for you, we make those that don’t speak spanish listen to a bi-lingual teacher re-read an assignment in spanish for you. We have signs in spanish we have everything for you so you really have no reason to learn english… Everyone suffers for that kindness. We have made an entire generation of immigrants into drooling zombies (Better known as Democrat voters) by allowing them the ability to remain MEXICANS first, rather than TRUE Americans, that believe in GOD, Family and Country. The new generation believes in “Gang, 40’s, and Ho’s” there is no “Patriotism” other than on Cinco De Mayo for the most part. Now there is one caveat.. ALL Mexican’s do not deserve this rant, if you are a hard working family, including your kids, you speak english, you don’t fly your Mexican flag and you consider yourself AMERICAN first… This rant is not about you or anyone like you. ITs about those that have sucked the life out of California by being what they left.

2. Over Regulation. You look at the resources and possibility for employers to call California home, yet why do they leave? They leave because of Cal EPA, they leave because of Cal OSHA they leave because of the taxes levied on them they leave because of the HIGH cost of employing people. Our State Government is punishing the very folks it needs. They make really cute commercials showing how wonderful it is here…BUT they leave out the real reason we have the nations highest unemployment rate. REGULATIONS. The wonderful beaches, are HOMELESS encampments for the most part the mountains are great for “Green stuff” like Hiking and skiing but try to go hunting and fishing, or try to show your kids how to live off the land and see how much red tape you have to go through. Try to get a business license for something around here and you will see real quick why business are again EXITING STAGE RIGHT>

3. Crime rates, recividism, and the lack of public outrage when laws were passed regarding personal rights. When the Anti-Gun morons in California decided to pass these “Little” laws that didn’t really affect “ME” at the time were enacted, then there was a small outrage. It was the NRA that made their voces heard in Sacramento but they had little support in the form of public outrage. We simply kept working, kept enjoying the scenery and kept looking out for “Numero uno”….NOW we can’t buy much more than a pea shooter or we can buy it but only after CONSTITUTIONALLY ILLEGAL Government intrusion. We must submit to countless privacy invasion, now they are going to stamp ammo…any outrage yet?
So Sacramento has successfully restricted INNOCENT LAW ABIDING CALIFORNIA citizens in their right to self preservation, you then make laws and judgments that give the criminals advantages in courts. Oh and lets not forget their treatment behind bars, cable tv, weight rooms and “Networking Opportunities” that make the small time criminal come out stronger, more street smart and more well connected than when he went in. And then for shits and giggles lets take a few more cops off the streets when budgets need cutting….

4. When Arnie took office I HAD HOPE! That soon faded after I realized that he had NO HELP in the state house, he tried some good things and it was HAMMERED by the libtard elites, the very powerful unions and the ever present ACLU and LA-RAZA folks. they were able to stop a lot of plans Arnie had when he first took office that MAY have allowed CALIFORNIA to remain above this HISTORY MAKING DEBT! He had good ideas that would have stopped some of the illegal immigration SUCKING at the state teet. He had business friendly ideas he touted on his campaign to oust Davis, He had tried and true REAGAN type common sense sollutions to the problem of businesses leaving. WELL that didn’t last long, the Kennedy hand up his ass was obviously very strong and it took his nuts and turned them into small grapes…(Either that or steroids) So here we are— FUCT.

So for those of you not in California, stay tuned.. this will be interesting. Trust me, IF/When the shit does hit the fan, you will know I’m knee deep in the middle of it by the body count on roads headed South East.  First SOB tries to get in my way ends up on my bumper like a deer carcas….
