The day of infamy

December 7, 2008

The day of infamy, December 7th, 1941. Not a single post about it that I could find on wordpress this morning. Are people so ambivalent about that these days? It makes me wonder.

My father and Godfather were in the Philippines that fateful day. The United States was on the ropes, and victory in the Pacific was far from assured. Both men later escaped capture and helped organized Filipino resistance to the invasion by the Japanese. Both of them attempted to rescue men that had been captured that endured the infamous Bataan death March.

People like them have been called “The greatest generation.”  But the men themselves..? I have never once heard any of them say anything much more beyond that they just did what had to be done. In my own family they just said that they were United States Marines, and that was what Marines do.

This is not about the various conspiracy theory’s that Roosevelt knew that we were about to be attacked, or even orchestrated the attack. It is about men and women that pulled together during a desperate time and defeated a three pronged assault on what we hold dear.

Our liberty and freedom. God bless each and every one of you.

Profiles of valor: USA Sgt. Marshall

April 11, 2008

U.S. Army Sergeant Benjamin Marshall was on a house-clearing mission in Tharthar, Iraq, in July 2006 when he and two fellow soldiers came under enemy fire. The two men on point were Staff Sergeant Christopher Schroeder and Sergeant William Wills. Schroeder was hit with two AK-47 rounds in the surprise attack and along with Wills he took cover in a room of the farmhouse. Marshall and the Iraqi interpreter managed to get out of the house unseen, but Marshall knew his comrades were in trouble without his help. He took up a position in a ramshackle chicken coop nearby in order to direct fire at the al-Qa’ida fighters. His counterattack spared Wills and Schroeder, though Marshall didn’t know for sure as he could only hear gunfire and jihadis chanting. Soon, a Humvee with backup arrived. Marshall shouted an alert to them of the situation, but that gave away his position and he immediately started taking fire. The diversion was just what Marshall hoped for, however, and with the Humvee’s help, he was able to get close to the house and evacuate Wills and Schroeder. In July 2007, Marshall was awarded the Bronze Star with combat “V” for valor.

Don’t Come Back, Jimmy! « Freedom Ain’t Free & Take Our Country Back

Once in a while I stumble onto a blog that is really impressive. This is one of them. In fact, this is on a par with the work of Robert Spencer when it comes to the religion of peace. If only the rest of the civilized world would wake up and smell the Imam’s.

Is the west perfect? No, of course not, and we make no such claim. But what about the blood thirsty purveyors of a religion founded by a pedophile?

Jimmy Carter was the worst of the worse, period.

Marine cleared in Haditha case

April 4, 2008

OhooRAH!

Though you wouldn’t know it from Leftmedia accounts or films like “Redacted” and “Battle for Haditha,” the case against the “Haditha Massacre” Marines has been falling apart for a couple of years now. In the most recent development, all charges were dropped against Lance Cpl. Stephen Tatum without explanation (read: lack of evidence). He is the third Marine to be exonerated, leaving only one to face court martial. “Lance Corporal Tatum wants to make it clear to the Marine Corps—especially other Marines—and everyone else that there were no deals in this decision,” said attorney Jack Zimmermann, a former military judge and retired Marine. “I have never had a client who would have more preferred to have a trial rather than have the charges dismissed in a deal. He has believed all along he did nothing wrong and was prepared and anxious to stand trial.” Somehow we doubt that Hollywood or Rep. Jack Murtha (D-“in cold blood”) will be apologizing for their rush to judgment.

“You say you want a revolution…”

April 3, 2008

A once beautiful land filled with hope and promise now looks at what a blood thirsty tyrant socialist will do. He has robbed the place blind. Yet he expects the serfs to adore him..? No, he will again find a way to crush the people beneath his heel.

Rhodesia, will rise again!

All eyes on Mugabe leadership meeting

By MacDonald Dzirutwe Thu Apr 3, 8:07 PM ET

HARARE (Reuters) – Zimbabweans hoping elections will bring relief from an economic catastrophe anxiously awaited a leadership meeting expected to discuss the biggest challenge to President Robert Mugabe‘s 28-year rule.

Ruling ZANU-PF party sources said the president would chair a party leadership meeting called for Friday.

Senior ZANU-PF official Didymus Mutasa declined to comment on whether the party was planning for a runoff against MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, although another official said earlier it was ready for a vote and would win it.

Mugabe faces deep discontent as Zimbabwe suffers the world’s highest inflation rate of more than 100,000 percent, a virtually worthless currency and severe food and fuel shortages.

Delayed results of the election to the senate — which must precede presidential results — trickled in on Thursday night.

First results issued by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) showed Tsvangirai’s MDC and Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF each winning five seats out of 60 contested for the senate, parliament’s upper house

Navy SEAL killed in Iraq to get Medal of Honor

March 31, 2008

I’ve posted elsewhere on this blog about this action involving this group of American Warriors. This was an unusual situation, and these are, and were unusual men. I can remember Seals coming into Ross – Sands Delicatessen in Point Loma. They were boisterous, and serious all at the same time. Man, could those guys eat!

Fair winds and following seas…

‘He never took his eye off the grenade,’ attack survivor says of his heroism

SAN DIEGO – An elite Navy SEAL who threw himself on top of a grenade in Iraq to save his comrades will be posthumously awarded the nation’s highest military tribute, a White House spokeswoman said Monday.

The Medal of Honor will be awarded to Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Monsoor. His family will receive the medal during a White House ceremony April 8.

Monsoor is the fifth person to receive the honor since the beginning of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

“Petty Officer Monsoor distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism on Sept. 29, 2006,” press secretary Dana Perino told reporters during a briefing aboard Air Force One as President Bush headed to Europe for a NATO summit.

Monsoor was part of a sniper security team in Ramadi with three other SEALs and eight Iraqi soldiers, according to a Navy account. An insurgent fighter threw the grenade, which struck Monsoor in the chest before falling in front of him.

Monsoor then threw himself on the grenade, according to a SEAL who spoke to The Associated Press in 2006 on condition of anonymity because his work requires his identity to remain secret.

‘We owe him’
“He never took his eye off the grenade, his only movement was down toward it,” said a 28-year-old lieutenant, who suffered shrapnel wounds to both legs that day. “He undoubtedly saved mine and the other SEALs’ lives, and we owe him.”

Two SEALs next to Monsoor were injured; another who was 10 feet to 15 feet from the blast was unhurt. Monsoor, from Garden Grove, Calif., was 25 at the time.

Monsoor, a platoon machine gunner, had received the Silver Star, the third-highest award for combat valor, for his actions pulling a wounded SEAL to safety during a May 9, 2006, firefight in Ramadi.

He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for his sacrifice in Ramadi.

Sixteen SEALs have been killed in Afghanistan. Eleven of them died in June 2005 when a helicopter was shot down near the Pakistan border while ferrying reinforcements for troops pursuing al-Qaida militants.

There are about 2,300 of the elite fighters, based in Coronado and Little Creek, Va.

The Navy is trying to boost the number by 500 — a challenge considering more than 75 percent of candidates drop out of training, notorious for “Hell Week,” five days of continual drills by the ocean broken by only four hours sleep total.

Monsoor made it through training on his second attempt.

Command releases report

March 28, 2008

United States Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM)  has released online an unclassified redacted version of the Joint Center for Operational Analysis (JCOA)-sponsored study entitled “The Iraqi Perspectives Project — Saddam and Terrorism:  Emerging Insights from Captured Iraqi Documents.”

By USJFCOM Public Affairs

(NORFOLK, Va. – March 20, 2008) — United States Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) has released online an unclassified redacted version of the Joint Center for Operational Analysis (JCOA)-sponsored study entitled “The Iraqi Perspectives Project — Saddam and Terrorism:  Emerging Insights from Captured Iraqi Documents.”

In order to accommodate continuing public interest and to provide an accurate, definitive report, this online version is made available to improve efficient delivery of this material.

The five volumes of the document, linked below, documents the history of the Saddam regime.

The Institute for Defense Analyses produced the report under contract for the command as part of the broader Iraqi Perspectives Project.

The Iraqi Perspectives Project examines operational and strategic insights and lessons from the perspective of former senior Iraqi decision-makers through the analysis of primary source material such as interviews and captured regime documents.

The study’s authors completed the report after screening more than 600,000 captured documents including several hundred hours of audio and video files archived by U.S. Department of Defense.

As part of USJFCOM, JCOA studies strategic and operational lessons from recent and ongoing military operations in order to improve the joint force.

Volume 1 contains the executive summary of the report. Volumes 2-5 provide supporting documentations.

Israel defends herself… again

March 9, 2008

Another shocking development in the Middle East this week: Hizballah launched missiles into Israel. Israeli forces responded by attacking strongholds in Gaza and then withdrew after Secretary Rice appealed for calm. Then, on Thursday, a Hamas terrorist killed eight at a rabbinical school in Jerusalem before being killed by an Israeli army officer. Palestinians in Gaza celebrated in the streets.

Since May 1948, peace talks have been the answer whenever fighting breaks out between Israel and its Arab neighbors, and this week was no different. It seems each new U.S. President must parade a new generation of combatants onto the world stage for the latest photo-op and temporary cease-fire, and so the peace charade continues.

The Chinese had a method of execution known as “Death from a thousand cuts,” a slow, painful punishment for the worst offenders. It seems we ask Israel time and time again to “take one more cut” in hopes that the executioner grows weary of the bloodshed. Instead they face new rocket attacks. Today’s peace talks have about as much chance of succeeding as the scores of earlier “talks, initiatives, roadmaps, benchmarks” and related diplomatic blather.

Until the Arab world recognizes Israel’s right to exist and stops inculcating its populace with “Death to the Jew” chants and threats to wipe them from the face of the earth, the cycle of violence will continue. On the other hand, the Jewish people may have reached a point in history where transfusions of U.S. dollars and aid are not enough to overcome the pain, and something tells us they will not walk quietly to the gas chambers this time. Iran and its Hizballah surrogates are playing a very dangerous game.
