2009 COLORADO WATERFOWL COLLECTOR’S STAMPS

October 28, 2009

2009 COLORADO WATERFOWL COLLECTOR’S STAMPS AND ART PRINTS NOW AVAILABLE

DENVER, Colo.–With winter nipping at Colorado, skeins of waterfowl are migrating through the state. Along with flocks of other diving ducks, observant hunters and waterfowl enthusiasts may be lucky to discern a handsome black and white diver with a striking yellow eye – the Barrows goldeneye.

The Barrows goldeneye, one of two similar ducks to visit Colorado during migration, is the avian ambassador featured on this year’s Colorado Waterfowl Collector Stamp, which is now available for collectors.

Award-winning Wisconsin wildlife artist Craig Fairbert’s vivid portrait captures a Barrows goldeneye drake and hen resting amid autumn leaves on a mossy rock in fast water. Fairbert’s “Golden Colorado” bested the work of 36 other wildlife artists to secure the highly coveted spot on this year’s stamp.

“The 2009 Colorado Waterfowl Stamp is truly one-of-a-kind,” said Brian Sullivan, DOW wetlands coordinator.  “Hunters and collectors alike will appreciate the amazing detail and design of this year’s stamp. It will make a great addition to anyone’s collection.”

Each year, the Colorado Waterfowl Stamp program holds a contest for original waterfowl artwork to be depicted on the collector waterfowl stamp. Stamps and a print of the stamp are created for sale to waterfowl and wetland enthusiasts, bird watchers, and stamp/collectors. The funds are used for wetland projects that benefit ducks, geese, shorebirds and other wetland-dependent wildlife species.

Since its inception in 1990, the Colorado Waterfowl Stamp program has raised $6.7 million to help restore and protect more than 19,500 acres of critical waterfowl habitat.  Additional funding from Ducks Unlimited and other partners has leveraged stamp resources to improve public waterfowl hunting opportunities and habitat throughout Colorado.  Many habitat improvement projects have been conducted on state wildlife areas.  Historically, some funds have also been used to improve important nesting areas in Canada known to produce the majority of Colorado’s migrant ducks.

“Loss of habitat is the single greatest threat to waterfowl,” said Sullivan.  “Participation in the stamp program by hunters and non-hunters alike is an effective way to contribute to this important conservation effort and ensure the long-term protection of Colorado’s waterfowl and wetland resources.”

All hunters age 16 or older must purchase a Colorado Waterfowl Stamp to hunt waterfowl in Colorado.  The stamp fee is $5 and has not increased since the program’s inception in 1990.  Hunters receive electronic stamps to validate their small game licenses, but they may also request traditional “gum-back” collector stamps, featuring Fairbert’s artwork.  Gum-back stamps will be mailed to hunters upon request. Beginning mid-December 2009, a $2.50 fee will be charged to cover the mailing and processing of the gum-back stamps.

For collectors, the 2009 waterfowl stamp/art print, as well as stamps and art prints from previous years, are available through the Colorado Wildlife Heritage Foundation.  Prints and stamps make great holiday gifts and can be purchased online (www.cwhf.info/shopOnline/index.asp) or by contacting Terrie DeLoria at: (terrie.Deloria@cwhf.info)

Dear Friend of the Second Amendment,

You may have heard about a special Congressional election taking place next week in upstate New York.  The race features a Nancy Pelosi Democrat and a Republican with long-standing ties to ACORN against a genuine pro-gun leader named Doug Hoffman.

Gun Owners of America Political Victory Fund is proud to endorse Doug Hoffman in this race.

Doug Hoffman is a 100% gun rights supporter who will be a leader in the battle to defend the Second Amendment.

Mr. Hoffman believes that laws restricting your right to keep and bear arms is no way to fight crime.

As the next Congressman from New York, Doug Hoffman will fight hard against the gun control schemes coming out of Nancy Pelosi’s office and he will work to repeal unconstitutional gun laws on the books.

One of Doug Hoffman’s opponents, Bill Owens, will be just another YES vote for radical anti-gun House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  He refuses to let voters know where he stands on specific gun control issues, which enables him to play it both ways on the Second Amendment.

Politicians like this are slowly destroying our right to keep and bear arms.

Mr. Hoffman’s other opponent, Dede Scozzafava, voted in 1999 for the kind of “study” of gun “safety” that is so often used by the gun prohibitionists as a backdoor to greater and more intrusive regulation.  Attacking gun owners’ rights under the cover of “safety” is a favorite tactic of the anti-Second Amendment crowd and she voted for it.

She also voted in 1999 to stick gun owners with a burdensome reporting requirement when a gun is stolen.   Under that law, the victim of a gun theft can be criminally prosecuted if the theft is not reported quickly enough to suit the authorities.  This type of law turns the victim into a criminal.

These are not the votes of a 100% defender of the Second Amendment.

In addition, this candidate has close ties to the radical anti-gun group ACORN. The current leader of ACORN, Bertha Lewis, also co-founded New York’s Working Families Party — a party that supported Scozzafava in past elections.

The right choice for gun owners in this election is clearly Doug Hoffman.

One recent poll shows Mr. Hoffman with a slight lead in the three-way race, but the election is all about voter turnout.  In the last few days of the campaign Doug needs our financial help to reach out to as many pro-Second Amendment voters as possible.

Your contribution of $25, $50, $100, or more at http://www.doughoffmanforcongress.com will help Doug Hoffman stay on the air, speaking directly to voters.

Your support of Doug Hoffman will send a strong message to Congressional leaders of both parties in Washington — a message that says NO to Nancy Pelosi’s gun control agenda and NO to more business-as-usual politicians.

We need representatives who are willing to “rock the boat” on Capitol Hill, and Doug Hoffman is just that type of candidate.  Please go to http://www.doughoffmanforcongress.com right away!

Sincerely,

Tim Macy
Vice-Chairman

The Addiction Series: Getting ready for Wild Turkey

October 27, 2009

Yes, I know. It’s Big Game season across much of the land. Not to mention upland bird and waterfowl seasons are, or are beginning to get going depending on where you are located.

This is, however, the time to not only think about spring Turkey hunting, but to prep for it. Thinking Colorado, and probably elsewhere. This is the time of year when you will most probably be meeting farmers and ranchers. In the coffee shops and stores as you go about your pursuit of Deer, Elk, Pheasant, and quail. Should you come upon a person that has tumbled their load of hay on a back country road? Pull over, and give them a hand getting it back onto their trailer or truck. It’s a great way to get information on local animals, and just might open a door to huntable land.

I have written elsewhere on this blog about Bosque Del Oso SWA, and places that are close to Denver where birds can be found. Guess what? From the confluence of Clear Creek and the South Platte River near Commerce City all the way to the border there are what are probably the thickest populations of Rio Grande Turkey’s in the state. The stretch between Commerce City and Fort Lupton being exceptional habitat. Getting permission to hunt though, is often the toughest part of the hunt. Get permission before you apply for a limited license. That’s where pre-planning,and getting to know the locals comes in. What follows is a video of Wild Turkey’s in similar riparian habitat courtesy of the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Enjoy!

Climate Change This Week: RINO Joins Cap-n-Tax Bandwagon

October 25, 2009

You can’t fix stupid.

This little tax went to energy, this little tax went to imports from nations that don’t cut carbon emissions. Unfortunately, there’s nothing “little” about the taxes in the Senate cap-n-tax bill, and the only fairytale related to the legislation is the politically tainted story of pending climate catastrophe. Yet, amid discredited scientific models, strangely disappeared research data, and dishonest rhetoric over a global warming “consensus,” Senate Democrats continue to herald cap-n-tax as low-cost environmental salvation.

In reality, as CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf recently testified, cap-n-tax would stunt GDP growth, keeping it up to 3.5 percent lower by 2050 than without the bill. And according to the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis, by 2035 cap-n-tax would plummet GDP by $9.4 trillion, drive job losses up to nearly 2.5 million, and spike gas prices by 58 percent. And all for just two-tenths of a degree cooling — at best — by 2100, says climatologist Chip Knappenberger.

Despite this, Sen. Lindsey Graham (RINO-SC) has handed himself to Democrats as a feather in their cap-n-tax scheme, joining Sen. John F. Kerry (D-MA) in a New York Times op-ed pushing the legislation. Graham imagines Democrats will reciprocate by supporting nuclear power and easing up on offshore drilling and domestic energy production. Right, Lindsey. That’s about as likely to happen as global warming.

The average American commits about three federal felonies per day

October 25, 2009

A few years ago I posted about all the laws that keep going on the books. I posited then, and still do that laws are rarely, if ever removed. Scare tactics are bread and butter for politicians irrespective of party affiliation.

Prosecutors and police have a vast array of statutes with which to send you off to the poky for an extended stay. Use of government power as a social engineering tool has a rather long and sordid history. From the racist based gun control laws to laws designed by better then thous to protect you from yourself they just keep piling them on. Political correctness, as embodied in various new laws that push agenda after agenda throttle freedom and liberty while supposedly protecting the same. Sexism, racism, and matters of equality seem to be the ticket to framing most of the newer tools of oppression, and don’t forget “acceptable” religion.

Framing certain unacceptable behavior’s as misdemeanors is a tactic often employed as of late. Along with attached felony penalties of course. Please note, that in most, if not all states, you can get a pardon for felony crimes if you clean your act up. However, for infractions and misdemeanors the situation is different. You are stuck with those penalties for life. Even when there is a mechanism in place for what is basically a pardon, it is most often at the whim of the prosecutors and court that convicted the person. Fat chance of that happening. They want the feathers in their war bonnets. While at the same time exposing their social cowardice for not having actually taken the person to task by convicting them of a felony.

“There’s no way to rule innocent men.
The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals.
Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them.
One declares so many things to be a crime
that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.”

To that end Reason magazine has an article up that is, for the most part pretty accurate. Aside from their illogical comment on illegal immigration. Read that in it’s entirety HERE.

Obamacare: Misogynous Connection

October 23, 2009

Misogynous obamacare? Is there disgust for women in this fiasco that the administration and socialist’s in congress are ramming down our throats? You decide.

Such piddling hurdles as federal law don’t matter to the Obama administration.

October 22, 2009

For a decade, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been forbidden by Congress from doing research on gun-control issues. Such piddling hurdles as federal law don’t matter to the Obama administration.

With a wave of a hand, the CDC has simply redefined gun-control research so the ban no longer applies. They’re not researching guns; they’re researching alcohol sales and their impact on gun violence, or researching how teens carrying guns affect the rates of non-gun injuries. “These particular grants do not address gun control; rather they deal with the surrounding web of circumstances,” wrote National Institutes of Health (NIH) spokesman Don Ralbovsky.

Gun-control advocates claim that banning the CDC from examining gun control amounts to a gag order on science. After all, what can be wrong with further scientific inquiry? But the issue isn’t about scientific inquiry. It is whether government resources should be used to promote an ideological agenda.

Take the Obama administration’s justification for its new gun research. “Gun-related violence is a public health problem – it diverts considerable health care resources away from other problems and, therefore, is of interest to NIH,” wrote the agency spokesman in an e-mail responding to questions from Republican members of Congress about new grants the CDC is giving out. The statement assumes the conclusion of the research before the first study is done.

The research on right-to-carry laws illustrates the problem with the CDC. Dozens of refereed academic studies by economists and criminologists using national data have been published in journals. While the vast majority of those studies find that right-to-carry laws save lives and reduce harm to victims, some studies claim that the laws have no statistically significant effect. But most tellingly, there is not a single published refereed academic study by a criminologist or economist showing a bad effect from these laws.

Look at the refereed academic research on laws that require people to lock up their guns in their homes. The number of accidental gun deaths and suicides of children remain unchanged, but the number of murders and other crimes rises. This is not too surprising as the locks make it more difficult for potential victims to quickly obtain a gun for protection, hence criminals are less likely to be deterred. Accidental gun deaths aren’t affected because most involve guns fired by adults with criminal records.

The research on guns that the CDC conducted before the ban – and that “public health” advocates continue to produce – is a joke. The statistical methods to research people’s behavior, such as criminal activity, are different from methods used to evaluate drug efficacy, where controlled experiments can be done.

In drug studies, patients don’t determine who gets the real drug and who gets the placebo. In real life, gun ownership isn’t assigned randomly. People who are more likely to be victims are more likely to own guns. They may still be more likely to be victims even after getting a gun, but are much less likely to be a victim than they would have been if they had never gotten one.

The CDC’s brazen end run around restrictions on gun-control research is hardly surprising given that when President Obama served on the board of the Joyce Foundation, it was the largest private funder of gun-ban research in the country. Now he has the resources of the whole federal government.

First we’ll get the half-baked studies followed by fawning press coverage. Then Democratic politicians and activists will pretend the gun restrictions they’ve always wanted were spurred by the new government research.

Gallup Confirms: Obama is still Gun Salesman of the year!

October 22, 2009

Gallup released poll results that confirm our contention that the President is indeed Gun Salesman of the year. While, as noted in the poll he himself has not proposed any firearms legislation, the legions of his minions certainly have, and he has not once. Not one single time said so much as a whisper in opposition to them. Whether it is something so drastic as giving away American sovereignty to the United Nations, or trying to control Mexico’s home grown endemic corruption and violence by destroying America’s Constitution he remains silent.

Hat tip to Anthony: Obama co-conspirators in the destruction of America are many, and are much more radical than most anticipated. Don’t think so? Read about them HERE.

As Gallup confirmed, I am not alone in my beliefs. Read about that HERE.

The incredible extremism of those that surround Obama can only be summed up by an old saying. “Birds of a feather flock together.” Perhaps the time has come to revive local militias, and prepare for the inevitable showdown that is on the horizon.

Ruger 10/22 fans: More bang for the buck!

October 20, 2009

It’s not often that I endorse a product or service but that is precisely what this will be. If you are anti-gun or have something against the Ruger© 10 / 22 Rifles, the most popular rim fire rifle in the world then stop reading.

I recently purchased a 10/22 rifle for my better half, as she had expressed an interest in learning to shoot. She had attended two “Becoming An Outdoors Woman” clinics that were offered by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. They may have created an addict because we are now getting her a Remington 870 Shotgun as well.

I have taught so many people to shoot over the years that I have learned a few things about doing that. One of the biggest is that trying to teach someone with inferior tools just results in utter disappointment, and frustration. For the student as well as the instructor, and that friend, is not a good thing.

Please don’t misunderstand me. The 10/22 is one of the absolute best semi-auto rifles that exist in whatever configuration. However, my better half, is an Engineer, and (sighs) a perfectionist to say the least. Ruger, like all the manufacturers have to live in a world filled with lawsuits and political correctness. What that translates into is a trigger near eight pounds, which was rough, gritty, and not at all acceptable. The magazine release was rough to use as well, and the Bolt Release was a nightmare to get working properly, if it would work at all. Still, I had high hopes…

I topped it off with a good but inexpensive scope. Finally found some 22 Long Rifle ammunition, and off to the range I went after using a BSA brand Bore sighting tool.

I initially did a “200 inch zero,” and things looked pretty good. Then I moved out to about twenty-five feet, and put ten rounds into about a dime sized group. I thought, alright, I must have pulled a few. It happens to the best of us sometimes after all. I put up another target and put five rounds down the spout. Four o’clock on the Nine Ring and not much over a quarter inch. Not bad, not bad at all. Considering the solid lead ammo that I was forced to use due to the nation wide ammunition shortage. 10/22’s are notorious for liking jacketed ammunition. But, still I wasn’t all that un-pleased.

About then I decided to do a bore swab and then switch over to the single box of Mini-Mag© ammunition that I had been able to purchase. I moved to the classic fifty-foot range that NRA Rim-fire Three position Matches are shot at.

The cleaning was a nightmare but using Hoppe’s Elite the fouling from the Remington solid lead ammunition finally cleared the lands and grooves. I checked the tightness of the rings on the scope and the main stock bolt as well as the barrel band screw. Yes, both needed a little bit of help. That’s the way things are with new rifles so I didn’t have a worry in the world beyond the looming thunderheads rolling in from the Big Horns.

Target Number One was a U.S. Army fifty foot qualification Small Bore Rifle Target. Ammunition was CCI Brand© Target and plinking Forty grain ammunition at a rated 1235 Feet Per-Second. I put five down the spout from a rest at the upper Zeroing Bull’s-eye. Fairly tight group centered on the three ring at the six o’clock. Adjusted and fired another five round set, and they were on the nine ring at ‘noon! The groups were so tight that I wondered if I had completely missed two of the shots! Then I shot the Bull’s…

One through ten. I was not a happy camper. Anyone can blow a shot at anytime. That is why it is called marksmanship after all. Let’s just say that if I would have been shooting for qualification any Range Officer worth the title would have pulled me from the line. Sheer fact is, he / she would have been more than justified. I was pretty shaken… I gathered up all the toys, and headed home.

I fired up the Internet and looked around for clues. I was in a near frantic state when? Lo, and behold! Yahoo Instant Messenger popped up. It was Brother Bear! We talked, actually typed, and started going over things. I had the rifle in my hands as we checked things over. I had already scrubbed the barrel, and looked at the muzzle thinking I needed the thing re-crowned. Good grief! Things were loose, and torqued in a way that so that a lot went cock-eyed once things, such as the barrel got hot!

Two days later I headed back out to the range. Things were better. At fifty feet all the bullets dropped into the seven ring or better. Can you say “Sharpshooter?” Yes, you could, but neither bear nor I was satisfied. We talked, and decided that that God Awful trigger had to be a big part of the lack of consistency. Like most people that enjoy the shooting sports I am more than willing to blame myself for any performance failure well before I will lay blame to the tool in my hands. The least of all when it comes to Ruger© firearms entire product line of excellence, in producing rifles, shotguns, and yes, pistols as well.

Where do we go from there? Well? Brother Bear told me to send him the trigger action, as a swap. He worked his magic on a trigger group that he had and sent that to me. The results were almost beyond belief!

The Bolt release actually works as it should! The trigger is smooth as a new born baby’s butt. The magazine drops like it is supposed to. And the groups are now working on one hundred yards. Not to mention that the bolt hold open feature, actually does work!

Having talked or otherwise contacted some very respected and qualified gunsmiths I wholly support, and recommend StalkingBearArms© if you, like myself, and so many others absolutely love shooting the Ruger 10/22.

It is rumored, by the way, that he works similar miracles on Remington 870© Shotguns (12 gauge only). We shall soon see!

Feds gone haywire..? Again? Say it isn’t so…

October 20, 2009

Prosecutorial misconduct is something that most people hold to be immeasurably immoral. Other than Prosecutors, that is. Oh sure, they will all line up in well spaced rows reminiscent of a regiment of soldiers condemning that sort of behavior. Yet they have their way of looking at what constitutes said act, or acts.

This way of thinking, warped as it is, and essentially Utilitarian in nature, says that the end justifies the means. It is in their collective DNA from all appearances. Alright, perhaps not all, but in the vast majority, winning, at any cost, while maintaining the appearance of high virtue is a given.

Convict for infractions and misdemeanors based in political correctness, and mysandry while knowing that there will be felony penalties attached but making sure that the defendant does not know that is just good business. Ignoring the Constitution that they swore to uphold, be that state or federal, and enforcing things like ex post facto law? They,as a group, are good to go. After all, the SCOTUS confirmed that such is the law of the land. Logic and morality be damned!

“When the government is allowed to use vague statutes to pursue prosecutions, no American is safe from stumbling into a vast, sticky web. Yet the use of such statutes has grown to such a perilous degree in the past quarter-century – especially via laws governing activity in cyberspace – that citizens can run afoul of laws that they do not know exist and that no one can really explain.”

Where will this stop? I have no idea. When will it stop? Same answer. With the caveat that I most certainly do not expect the Republicans to do anything about it. Remember Ramos and Compean? The Democrat attacks on civil liberties are just as evil, and unfolding before our eyes every day. Is the Internet next? No,it’s already in their sights as a target in their never ending crusade for unbridled power and control over our lives, and has been for some time.

Read the whole thing HERE.
