Smell the coffee: ABC Poll reflects disatisfaction

I nearly fell out of my seat when I read the headline. An ABC / Wapo poll said what people have been saying since before the last election. From onerous taxation to the economy to obamacare and gun control the list is seemingly a mile long.

Figure it out big government types. We are mad as can be, and no, we will not allow ourselves to be disarmed, nor will we allow you to shut us up. We are fed up with neo-cons and neo coms telling us that we are all to stupid to know what is best for ourselves and our families. We are fed up with our sons and daughters being sent off to wars that are none of our business while at the same time leaving our nation vulnerable.

The United States is becoming Balkanized more and more each day and it can be directly attributed to the breakdown in our liberty and freedom,and that is due to the government. All three branches…

Truly, a match made in heaven: Gay Marriage?

Today, Michael Bloomberg’s coalition against illegal guns placed a full-page ad in the Washington Post urging lawmakers to prevent suspects on a federally maintained “terror watch list” from being allowed to purchase guns.

“500 mayors agree with the Obama and Bush Administrations: stop terror suspects from getting guns,” the ad says.

It’s also been an issue that Rahm Emanuel voiced support for back in 2007, according to  this video clip.

“We got to make this a number one issue, as a test vote, and take it into the election.” He added, “If it’s between that terrorist list and the NRA, I know where America is going to be every time.”

Bloomberg said closing this loophole was his “number one priority.” He also offered the following description of why gun control critics have been so successful in blocking this kind of restriction: “There’s extremists in the pro-gun movement who threaten our elected representatives around the country, whether they’re in the legislature or executive side with working to get them removed, to remove them from office if they don’t support the line that the extremists want: no reasonable restrictions, no enforcement of federal laws, elimination of federal laws. And we’ve just got to say ‘we’re not going to take it anymore.”

The Next Bailout

The Wall Street Journal reports on yet another government bailout at taxpayer expense. It seems that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is burning through its reserves. In the last year the FDIC has paid out in excess of $34.8 billion. Additionally, the FDIC’s list of troubled banks has increased from 305 to 416, even as it has closed 84 since the beginning of this year. The true scope of the problem is unfathomable. Now the FDIC is letting Congress and the nation’s bankers know that they may need more cash from either increased insurance premiums, special assessments or perhaps even the Treasury itself.

Deposit insurance premiums are (supposed to be) risk based. The CAMEL ratings (for risk factors Capital adequacy, Asset quality, Management competence, Earnings and Liquidity) are between one (best) and five (worst) and averaged for a composite value. But don’t ask your local banker his CAMEL rating because he can’t tell you — it’s a secret. That is one component of the moral hazard that accompanies deposit insurance. With a bank’s level of safety and soundness concealed, depositors must base their decisions only upon expected rate of return.

In a supposed attempt to keep the insurance fund solvent, FDIC hit the nation’s banks with a special assessment in the fourth quarter of 2008, causing a further depletion of capital from the banking system as a whole and forcing even more marginal banks into the red. Banking trade associations have been advising their members to expect a similar special assessment in 4Q2009. These increased expenses reduce the net income of individual banks, thus further straining their ability to retain earnings to improve their capital adequacy. To control cost and preserve earnings, bankers are giving deposit rates hard scrutiny. Couple this with FDIC’s quiet request to Congress for the authority to borrow up to $500 billion from the U.S. Treasury (five times its regular borrowing limit,) and one can see taxpayers squeezed, on the one hand, by lower interest rates on savings and, on the other hand, higher taxes to service increased federal debt.

Bottom line is that deposit insurance is not free, and as with all insurance, there are inherent risks. After a 15-year expansion in the U.S. economy (1992-2007) with banks being encouraged (or, perhaps more accurately, extorted) to engage in increasingly risky loans, (sub-prime mortgages, community re-development and re-investment) the current economic contraction has exposed bankers to increased risk, which may ultimately be borne by the taxpayer.

Fight the government DNA database of innocent citizens.

Colorado Libertarian PSA:

Colorado Senate Bill 09-241, which would mandate the use of government force to take DNA samples from innocent citizens, passed the second reading on the Senate floor Friday afternoon.

This gross expansion of state power is not a partisan issue. Both progressive Democratic Senator Morgan Carroll (D-Aurora) and conservative Republican Bill Cadman (R-Colorado Springs) oppose the bill as an unconstitutional overreaching of state power over the rights of the individual.

Currently, the State collects DNA from everyone convicted of a felony. The bill mandates the collection of DNA samples from everyone merely arrested – not convicted – for a felony. Somewhere along the way, the concept of “innocent until proven guilty” is lost among the bill’s backers.

To many Colorado citizens, however, that fundamental American concept still means something. The Libertarian Party of Colorado, the Colorado ACLU, the Gadsden Society, the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar and the Colorado Public Defenders Office, among others, all oppose this costly Orwellian expansion of government power over innocent citizens.

David K. Williams, Jr., Legislative Director for the Libertarian Party and President of the Gadsden Society is among those against the bill.

“The backers of this bill claim it will help law enforcement. Undoubtedly it would,” Williams said. “So would the repeal of the Fourth Amendment. So would micro chipping newborns so the government knows where they are all at times, from cradle to grave. So would putting video cameras in every house.

“The point is that helping law enforcement is not the only concern Americans should have. Protecting the Constitution and preventing government abuse of power should also be a concern of all Americans.”

According to the latest fiscal note attached to the bill, the DNA collection will cost the State over $2 million in the next fiscal year. There is no reason for this bill to pass, but to incur such an expense when the state is facing a budgetary crisis is madness.

To raise the money to implement this unconstitutional invasion of privacy, the bill imposes a $5 surcharge tacked on top of all traffic infractions. Republican Senator Ted Harvey (R- Highlands Ranch) opposes the bill because of this surcharge. “I do not believe there is a nexus,” he said.

Senator Harvey is correct. There is not.

The bill is set for a final vote in the Senate this week. Contact your Senator and let him know you oppose this Orwellian expansion of state power over innocent citizens.

The election

Some people are just never happy. That is why most places have the ability to write in your choice for an elected position.

I myself, have never seen a “perfect” candidate. At least one that I agreed with 100 % and that was polished in debates and so on. But when I look at what we are being offered this time around I just want to puke.

Obama wants to start up his own gestapo. McCain has worked against the first amendment. Barr helped write law that was diametrically opposed to the Constitution, and then plays wiggle worm when cornered about it. All three have actively worked against the Second Amendment.

So then what to do..? Look ahead toward a better day in the future. I think that if the socialists do gain an overwhelming majority that after a single term Obama will look worse than either Jimmy Carter or George Bush to most Americans, and then perhaps they will understand that there is a very real danger in allowing people like that to come into power. Heck, he might even take the place of most hated president while living from Richard Nixon. I look at this moral mess that we have up before us to choose from, and think one name, Spiro Agnew. The nausea reminds me of post surgical morphine. Too bad I don’t get the analgesic effect to go along with it.

Then we have all the dire predictions from both sides and all persuasions. Riots if Obama loses. Riots if Obama wins. Survivalists organizations resurrecting as well as militia movements in preparation for what those people believe to be the inevitable outcome irrespective of who wins. The ever present threat of Islamic terrorism as well as home grown terrorist factions. Factions that play on religious differences, or race, or sex, anything to get people worked up to the point of violence. Perhaps even a “Night of the long knives” here in America. Foisted upon us by those that know better than we do how we should live our lives. America appears to have become a roller coaster. The emotions doing a pretty good immitation of bi-polar disorder, never finding a middle ground of stability.

I fear for my nation. This balkanization could very well lead to a civil war the likes of which the world has never seen before. Or, it could lead to a new America that is the hope of the world.

Time will tell.
