Colorado Media Matters R.I.P.

March 21, 2009

Obituaries are seldom things that are pleasant to write. However sometimes they can be gleeful. Colorado Media Matters went down the tubes this past week. I say good riddance to them. Nothing more than a leftest attack machine that regularly took things out of context, Colorado Media Matters was a disinformation outlet that would have made Stalin proud.

From Ari Armstrong to Gunny Bob few went un-assaulted by the hatemongers at Colorado Media Matters. I posted about them once and got swamped with hate mail, and less than coherent responses filled with curses and vindictive. The following links will tell the tale for any readers.

GET READY FOR SPRING TURKEY HUNTING

March 21, 2009

GET READY FOR SPRING TURKEY HUNTING; SEASON STARTS APRIL 11

Colorado’s spring turkey season offers hunters one of the most unique experiences in the field.

From late April through mid May, turkeys are at the height of their mating season. The hens are calling for the toms, and the toms are on the move looking for mates and putting on their displays of wild machismo.

“There is nothing else like hunting turkeys,” says Tom Spezze, southwest regional manager for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. “You call them in, the toms are making all kinds of noises spitting and drumming, and they’ll get right next to you. It’s incredibly exhilarating.”

The 2009 spring turkey season starts April 11 and continues through May 24, although dates vary in some units. Over-the-counter licenses can be purchased for most units in the state; but some areas are limited so be sure to check the 2009 turkey hunting brochure.

Turkey hunters can use shotguns and bows during the spring hunt. Shots are usually made within 30 yards of a bird. Hunters must be sure of their targets–only toms can be hunted during the spring.

Because turkeys are very wary and spook easily, hunters are allowed to dress in full camouflage. One note of caution: Because hunters wear camouflage, turkey hunting can be dangerous in popular areas. As with every other type of hunting, only shoot at what you see and clearly identify. If you shoot in the direction of a sound you might be shooting at another hunter making a call. If you need to signal to another hunter the best method is to whistle.

Turkeys roost in trees at night so the hunter’s first task is to locate the resting spot. Spezze recommends that hunters arrive near the roost just before dawn and find a place to set up without spooking the birds. Hens welcome the day with a very sleepy “tree call.”  The toms will gobble in response to nearly every hen call made in the roost. After adequately announcing the day, the birds will fly down from the roost once light is full. Then they’ll begin calling to gather the flock for the day.

Seasoned spring turkey hunters will usually begin calling to the toms before any of the birds fly down in an effort to direct them away from the roosted hens.

A common mistake turkey hunters make is “over-calling,” says Spezze. Hunters should only imitate the various calls the turkeys are making at that moment.

“Nothing scares off an already-wary tom more than calls that are too loud or too frequent,” Spezze says.

As toms approach, the hunter must sit absolutely still. Any shot must be executed very quickly. Shotgun pellets won’t penetrate a turkey’s plumage, so the aim must be at the head and neck.

Two types of turkeys live in Colorado. The Merriam’s turkey lives primarily in the mountains, while the Rio Grande turkey lives on the flat lands east of I-25. Populations of both types of turkey are healthy and have been growing during the last few years.

The Merriam’s turkey is partial to open meadows and usually roosts in ponderosa pine trees. They can also be found in oak brush and pinon-juniper stands. Hunters should find areas where turkeys have cover, forage and nesting habitat. Look for meadows in narrow valleys where there are grassy areas, aspen groves and ponderosa pines. The Merriam’s, however, are wanderers and will roam over large areas.

The Rio Grande is the larger of the two birds and can usually be found in cottonwood trees and along riparian areas. The birds are creatures of habit, often roosting in the same tree and feeding in the same fields every day. Rio Grande turkeys are easier to locate than Merriam’s and hunting them is generally not as difficult.

Turkeys forage for seeds, grasses, forbs and insects. Hens usually nest in tall grass and prefer to be near a water source.

Hunters should scout areas looking for sign– tracks, feathers, droppings, scratching and dusting areas. Even if turkeys are not seen or heard, it’s a good bet to hunt in places where there are lots of fresh sign.

Turkey calls also are essential–box calls, slates and mechanical-plunger calls are easy to use.

Your calling position should have a solid back as wide as your shoulders while providing you with a wide area of visibility. Don’t hide so well that you can’t see what’s happening in front of you.

Hunters should not try to stalk turkeys in the spring because chances of success are slim. Set up in a somewhat concealed location and wait for the birds to come to you.

Hunting in the morning is typical, but toms can also be called in late in the afternoon. So don’t hesitate to hunt late in the day.

The long season also works to hunters’ advantage. Some of the best hunting occurs late in the season when hens are on the nest. If you miss opening day, you won’t be missing your chance to get a turkey.

This “right of spring” is an experience that turkey hunters look forward to every year.  Successful hunters are rewarded with fine, lean meat. With careful cooking, wild turkey makes an excellent and highly nutritious meal.

Profiles of Valor: U.S. Army Sgt. Malone

Profiles of Valor: U.S. Army Sgt. Malone

Malone

United States Army Sergeant First Class Ed Malone was serving with the 3rd Platoon, Grim Troop, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in 2005 and was conducting a joint combat patrol with the Iraqi Army in the extremely hostile Surai district of Tal’Afar, when the unit was attacked. Without immediate direct fire support from his Bradley Fighting Vehicles, Malone ordered his men to take a defensive position and return fire. He directed his grenadier to eliminate several enemy targets firing from a rooftop. Malone also repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire — once to retrieve important equipment, another time to evacuate women and children caught in the crossfire, and finally to drag a wounded soldier out of the line of fire. His actions sped medical treatment and evacuation, saving the soldier’s life. Malone refused to give ground until reinforcements arrived, and he and his unit held their position for more than an hour. He led a three-man team to clear a courtyard of enemy fighters, relieving pressure on his unit. There, while administering aid to an enemy combatant, Malone was shot in the foot. For his brave actions that day, Malone was awarded the Bronze Star with combat “V” for valor.

OPERATION “LEATHERNECK COMFORT”

March 20, 2009
GUNNY BOB LAUNCHES

OPERATION “LEATHERNECK COMFORT”

In Support of

Marine Parents (www.marineparents.com) and Marines in Combat In Iraq and Afghanistan

A 501 (c)(3) Charity

Every year, Gunny Bob comes up with a very worthy charity drive. We’ve done Operation “Beanie Baby,” which sent nearly 50,000 Beanie Babies to the children of Iraq; Operation “Leatherneck Sheets,” which sent huge numbers of cotton sheets to Marines in Iraq to keep them cool in the blazing heat of the Middle East; and Operation “Cancun Honeymoon,” which raised more than $8,000 to send badly wounded Marine Corporal Aaron Mankin and his Marine wife on the honeymoon they never got because they were in the war serving you instead.

Now Gunny Bob and Marine Parents announce Operation “Leatherneck Comfort,” which we hope will raise $5,000 for combat Marines, including Purple Heart recipients, and their families.

The Gunny is asking you, his troops, to once again answer the call of duty by contributing to Operation “Leatherneck Comfort” by clicking on the link to your left and donating through PayPal or your credit card. Please give whatever you can afford and remember that your generous, tax-deductable contribution will make Marines in combat (http://www.thecarepackageproject.com/) and those who can no longer serve because of their grievous wounds, or who are recovering from their wounds in military hospitals (http://www.purpleheartfamilies.com/), a little more comfortable.

America has counted on its Marine Corps since 1775. Now you can return the favor by donating to this outstanding charity. Your Marines and their families need you.

Judge Blocks Rule Permitting Concealed Guns In U.S. Parks

March 20, 2009

The usual suspects are back at it using the courts to thwart the liberty of others as well as  undermine the ability of decent people to defend themselves and others. The national Parks, like our schools and colleges, are free fire zones for criminals. But, the Brady Bunch would prefer for you to be bitten by bears or sodomized by social misfits rather than be capable of properly and effectively defending yourself, your family, and other innocent people.

A federal judge yesterday blocked a last-minute rule enacted by President George W. Bush allowing visitors to national parks to carry concealed weapons.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly issued a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit brought by gun-control advocates and environmental groups. The Justice Department had sought to block the injunction against the controversial rule.

The three groups that brought the suit — the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the National Parks Conservation Association and the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees — argued that the Bush action violated several laws.

In her ruling, Kollar-Kotelly agreed that the government’s process had been “astoundingly flawed.”

When will Atlas shrug?

March 20, 2009

What is the breaking point? Where will the resistance form? Heavy questions, but unavoidable in the current political climate. The productive members of society can only be pushed so far, some say.

What they envision is not defiance of law or a reversal of the election. It is people’s growing disengagement from a new economic order that punishes effort and rewards envy — the creepy future that Bill Ritter and Barack Obama intend for us. Columnist Michelle Malkin calls that withdrawal “going Galt.”

Malkin was the first speaker last weekend when several hundred Coloradans gathered for a free-market leadership conference in Colorado Springs. Her reference was to John Galt, the individualist hero of Ayn Rand’s novel, “Atlas Shrugged.” She told of seeing a placard at the protest rally for Obama’s stimulus bill signing that warned: “Atlas will shrug.”

So what, you ask. In human behavior, incentives matter. People are choosers, not automatons. Mess them over enough and they’re out of here. All history proves it. “We pretend to work and they pretend to pay us.” That bitter joke among Soviet factory drones sums up collectivism’s ultimate failure wherever tried.

Illinois Supreme Court Dismisses Lawsuit Against Gun Industry

March 19, 2009

In Illinois? I about fell over when I read this. I mean..? The land of obama and Daley? Well, even broken clocks show the correct time twice a day…

Fairfax, Va. – Today, the Illinois Supreme Court dismissed yet another reckless lawsuit aimed at putting firearms manufacturers out of business. Adames v. Beretta was dismissed under the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act of 2005 (PLCAA). The court’s order affirmed the original trial court judgment in the case.

This is the second judicial decision in 2009 upholding a dismissal under the PLCAA. Ten days ago, the U.S. Supreme Court denied appeals in the cases of New York v. Beretta and District of Columbia v. Beretta.

NRA chief lobbyist Chris W. Cox said, “We are pleased that the Court recognized that the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act is the law of the land. America’s law-abiding firearms manufacturers must be protected from reckless suits, such as this one, that have no legal merit. Blaming gun manufacturers for the acts of criminals is not the way we do things in America, and today the Illinois Supreme Court confirmed this view.”

The Illinois Supreme Court found that “the discharge of the Beretta was caused by a volitional act that constituted a criminal offense, which act shall be considered the sole proximate cause of any resulting death.”

The Court also agreed with the appellate court in finding the PLCAA was constitutional. Finally, it let stand the trial court’s findings that “the Beretta [pistol] was not unreasonably dangerous or defectively designed” and that the danger of pointing a gun at another person and pulling the trigger is open and obvious, even if the person pointing the gun mistakenly believes that the gun is not loaded.

Several cities and individual plaintiffs began suing firearm manufacturers in the late 1990s, based on the expectation that although the industry manufactured a legal product, forcing manufacturers to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in legal fees just to prove their innocence in court would drive them into bankruptcy.

In addition to being based on bogus legal theories that seek to evade personal responsibility for criminal or reckless acts, these lawsuits endangered American military personnel and law enforcement officers. During congressional debate on the PLCAA, the Department of Defense issued a statement agreeing with the NRA that bankrupting U.S. gun makers and making us dependent on foreign countries like France, Russia or China for small arms would be a threat to America’s domestic and international security.

-NRA-

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest civil rights and sportsmen’s group. Four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation’s leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the military.

NC Reminds:  Americans have a right to associate with whomever they choose.  This law WILL BE struck down as unconstitutional as it forces one to a form of slavery! Big bubby will not tell my children or me where to serve if we choose not to serve a Marxist regime!  I choose where I will volunteer!  PERIOD!

hat tip to Git-R-Done

pimpf“Arbeit macht frei” is a German phrase meaning “work brings freedom” or “work shall set you free/will free you”

NC reminds:  No!  The TRUTH shall set you free NOT working for some bloated gub’ment!

This is up for a vote on Tuesday.

When “volunteerism” becomes required, then it is no longer volunteerism. It becomes slavery! Here is the link to the bill:
H.R. 1388:

This is the equivalent of brown shirts and the “Arbeit macht frei” It has provisions for youth as well as seniors and everybody in between. This bastard (Hussein) has got to be stopped! It’s all in the Saul Alinsky book too.

Obama Requires YOU to SERVE, H.R.1388, “The Give Act” to reform the National Service HR 1388, will hit the House floor on Tuesday. It is called the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act (The Give Act.) The House is scheduled to Rule this week. Sponsored by Democrat Representative Carolyn McCarthy (NY), Education and Labor Committee. The objective is to reauthorize and reform the national service laws.

Happy Fascist!

Happy Fascist!

Democrat Rep. McCarthy is sponsoring the bill with 25 co-sponsors, ALL Democrats, including Charlie Rangel, need I say more? Latest Major Action: 3/11/2009 House committee/subcommittee actions. Status: Ordered to be Reported (Amended) by the Yeas: 34 and Nays: 3.

NC Reminds:  The gub’ment DOES NOT POSSESS a RIGHT to REQUIRE individuals to give three years of their time to some “service”.  Show me this right!

The Government has the right to require individuals to give 3 years service under the guise of “volunteer” service. It talks about uniforms and “camps.” They revise the word “camps” and call it “campus.” There is also language about Seniors and Community organizations.

Above the gates as you enter, it says: Arbeit Macht Frei, work will set you free. Man is capable of such wrong doing in the name of a cause, again and again through out history a charismatic man promises eutopia at the cost of abhorrent acts as a means to it.

Some language in the Bill is particularly disturbing like:

“leverage Federal investments to increase State, local, business, and philanthropic resources to address national and local challenges;
encourage national service efforts to address pressing national challenges, such as improving education for low-income students, increasing energy conservation, and improving the health, well-being, and economic opportunities of the neediest individuals in the Nation;
expand and strengthen service-learning programs through year-round opportunities, including during the summer months, to improve the education of children and youth and to maximize the benefits of national and community service, in order to renew the ethic of civic responsibility and the spirit of community to children and youth throughout the United States;
increase service opportunities for our Nation’s retiring professionals
encourage members of the Baby Boom generation to partake in service opportunities
Civilian Community Corps shall be called the “National Civilian Community Corps”
the Director determines appropriate “Uniforms”
Take note of the Miscellaneous Section (Title VI) of the Bill. Very Strange!!!
Sec. 601. Amtrak waste disposal. -Sec. 602. Exchange program with countries in transition from totalitarianism to Democracy. Here is the Obama spin on it:  This is an article from the Department of Education and Labor.
I am concerned about “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” This Bill doesn’t sound like FREEDOM to me no matter how you dress it up.

Bumper Sticker Law Enforcement…

March 18, 2009

This would be hilarious if it wasn’t true…

A few days ago, the conspiracist site Infowars posted a “strategic report” by the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC), a police “public safety partnership” that collects “incident reports of suspicious activities to be evaluated and analyzed in an effort to identify potential trends or patterns of terrorist or criminal operations within the state of Missouri.” The document is a throwback to the great militia panic of the ’90s, a time when all sorts of libertarian and populist organizations were conflated with domestic terrorists, and when the threat posed by the latter was wildly exaggerated. Among other things, the MIAC paper declares that “It is not uncommon for militia members to display Constitution Party, Campaign for Liberty, or Libertarian material. These members are usually supporters of former Presidential Candidate: Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, and Bob Barr.” It also warns that the Gadsden Flag, bearing a coiled rattlesnake and the slogan DON’T TREAD ON ME, “is the most common symbol displayed by militia members and organizations.”

Infowars isn’t always reliable (to put it mildly), but this time it broke some real news: Missouri authorities admit the document is genuine. In a follow-up story by the Associated Press, one of them unpersuasively attempts to defend the report:

Lt. John Hotz of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said the report comes from publicly available, trend data on militias. It was compiled by the Missouri Information Analysis Center, a “fusion center” in Jefferson City that combines resources from the federal Department of Homeland Security and other agencies. The center, which opened in 2005, was set up to collect local intelligence to better combat terrorism and other criminal activity, he said.

“All this is an educational thing,” Hotz said of the report. “Troopers have been shot by members of groups, so it’s our job to let law enforcement officers know what the trends are in the modern militia movement.”

But Tim Neal, a military veteran and delegate to last year’s state GOP convention, was shocked by the report’s contents….Neal, who has a Ron Paul bumper sticker on his car, said the next time he is pulled over by a police officer, he won’t know whether it’s because he was speeding or because of his political views.

“If a police officer is pulling me over with my family in the car and he sees a bumper sticker on my vehicle that has been specifically identified as one that an extremist would have in their vehicle, the guy is probably going to be pretty apprehensive and not thinking in a rational manner,” Neal said. “And this guy’s walking up to my vehicle with a gun.”
