Epic Fail Obama:State Department Squirms

September 4, 2010

A lot of things have changed in the federal government since President Harry S. Truman put his famous “the buck stops here” sign on his desk. This week, Fox News reported that it couldn’t get a straight answer from the State Department about its decision in March to disapprove the importation of more than 800,000 M1 Garand rifles and M1 carbines from South Korea.

According to Fox, the State Department claimed that the rifles might be used “for illicit purposes.” But when asked to explain, State passed the buck to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which passed it to the Department of Justice, which passed it back to State.

The anti-gun Brady Campaign didn’t hesitate to give Fox an answer, however. “Guns that can take high-capacity magazines are a threat to public safety,” the group’s Dennis Henigan told reporter Maxim Lott.

Of course, Henigan’s response was factually flawed. The M1 Garand does not “take” a “high-capacity” magazine; its magazine is built in, and holds only eight rounds.  That’s three fewer than the 11 rounds necessary for a magazine to be restricted as a “large capacity” magazine under California’s law, which the Brady Campaign calls a “model for the nation,” or the federal ban of 1994-2004 (which the group still advocates as a fall-back position in the event that Congress doesn’t impose something more severe).

Since sales of imported firearms are subject to the national instant background check, Henigan’s position was also hypocritical. To justify not letting the M1s and carbines into the U.S., Henigan essentially took the position that the instant check is not enough to protect public safety. But at other times, Brady takes the position that public safety requires us to impose the same instant checks on sales of firearms by people who are not dealers.

Finally, the “public safety” fear of these guns is irrational. Today, Americans own more Garands and carbines than ever before.  We also own more semi-automatic rifles in general than ever before, and more self-defense handguns with standard magazines that hold more than 10 rounds than ever before.  Yet despite gun ban groups’ predictions, the nation’s violent crime rate is at a 35-year low.

Feds Sue Sheriff Arpaio in Civil Rights Probe

September 3, 2010

This, is just plain disgusting…

The U.S. Justice Department sued Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Thursday, saying the Arizona lawman refused for more than a year to turn over records in an investigation into allegations his department discriminates against Hispanics.

The lawsuit calls Arpaio and his Maricopa County office’s defiance “unprecedented,” and said the federal government has been trying since March 2009 to get officials to comply with its probe of alleged discrimination, unconstitutional searches and seizures, and jail policies that discriminate against people with limited English skills.

Arpaio, who had been given until Aug. 17 to hand over documents the federal government asked for 15 months ago, called the Justice Department actions harassment.

His office has said it won’t hand over additional documents because federal authorities haven’t said exactly what they were investigating.

“They have hundreds of thousands of reports, hundreds of thousands,” Arpaio said at a news conference Thursday morning in downtown Phoenix. “They’re so broad, we’re trying to narrow it down. We’re trying to work with them.”

The lawsuit is a ruse, Arpaio said.

“I think they know we have not been racial profiling, so what’s the next step — camouflage the situation, go to the courts, and make it look like I’m not cooperating?” he said.

Is the Tea Party Becoming the New Grand Old Party?

September 3, 2010

I came across this in my email, and I think it’s an interesting read. Be sure to follow the link.

Is the tea party the new Republican Party?

The grass-roots network of fed-up conservative-libertarian displayed its power in its biggest triumph of the election year: the toppling of Sen. Lisa Murkowski in Alaska’s GOP primary. Political novice Joe Miller is the fifth tea party insurgent to win a GOP Senate nominating contest, an upset that few, if any, saw coming.

With the stunning outcome, the fledgling tea party coalition and voters who identify with its anti-tax, anti-spending sentiments proved that democracy is alive and well — within the Republican Party. Don’t like who is representing you? Rise up, fire them and choose someone new.

The tea party has taken hold in the Grand Old Party, unseating lawmakers, capturing nominations for open seats and forcing Republicans to recalibrate both their campaign strategy and issues agenda. Out is talk of delivering federal dollars back home; in is talk of fiscal discipline.

Within minutes of Murkowski conceding late Tuesday night, Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., was among the conservative Republicans cheering Miller.

“He pulled off the upset victory of the year because he ran on principles and because Alaskans, like all Americans, want to stop the massive spending, bailouts and debt that are bankrupting our country,” said DeMint.

Taking a shot at Murkowski if not the entire Republican establishment, he added: “Joe Miller’s victory should be a wake-up call to politicians who go to Washington to bring home the bacon. Voters are saying ‘We’re not willing to bankrupt the country to benefit ourselves.'”

Arizona’s Illegal Immigrant Law: A quick and dirty fix?

September 1, 2010

Having lost a position that was perhaps the best that I ever was privileged to enjoy, at least in part, because of caring for illegal immigrants. The place simply went broke…

Those that are opposed to the courageous stand taken by Arizona are for the most part simply race baiting, or dislike law enforcement in general.

Here is my quick and dirty fix, and it should pass Constitutional muster as well as show the race baiting segment that it is about public safety, not race.

ANYONE stopped, for anything, would have to have their citizenship status verified. The vast majority of police contacts are traffic related, and most states now require proof of citizenship. Same for state identification cards. Would this add to an Officers burden? How? Every contact get’s ran for wants and warrants and if the drivers license or I.D. is phony somebody is going to the Gray Bar Inn! Make it a state misdemeanor, like Arizona did, in every state to be there unlawfully, and let the feds take it from there. Six months should be plenty of time for them to act. Especially if there were also other related charges.

But, that would probably be to simple a fix for government to wrap their minds around.

Political incorrectness: must be Conservative or Libertarian

September 1, 2010

“Are you opposed to Obamacare or illegal immigration? You’re a racist. Are you opposed to gay marriage? You’re a homophobe. Did you oppose Elena Kagan’s appointment to the Supreme Court? You’re a sexist. After less than two years of complete Democrat control of government, there aren’t many Americas progressives haven’t accused of some sort of bigotry for simply having an opinion different from theirs. The politics of ‘hope’ and ‘change’ have devolved into exactly what those espousing them claimed they would end. Is this really Democrat’s plan to win votes in November?” –writer Derek Hunter

“The Democrats are going to get beaten badly in November. Not just because the economy is ailing. And not just because Obama overread his mandate in governing too far left. But because a comeuppance is due the arrogant elites whose undisguised contempt for the great unwashed prevents them from conceding a modicum of serious thought to those who dare oppose them.” –columnist Charles Krauthammer

“Those who mocked George W. Bush for openly declaring his faith in God and sharing that he prays to God for strength squawked about the horrors in Bush’s allowing his beliefs to influence his governance. Apart from the mockers’ misunderstanding of the proper intersection of faith and governance, let me pose another question. Are you more comfortable with a chief executive who, along with the overwhelming majority of Americans, humbly admits to reliance on God or one who projects the impression that he himself is messianic?” –columnist David Limbaugh

“Alan Simpson violated a taboo last week when he likened Social Security to ‘a milk cow with 310 million tits.’ But contrary to the dictionary-deprived critics who accused him of sexist vulgarity, the former Wyoming senator’s transgression had nothing to do with his use of a perfectly acceptable synonym for teat. Simpson’s real sin was ‘belittling a bedrock program,’ as the AARP put it — i.e., showing insufficient reverence for a sacred cow.” –columnist Jacob Sullum

“To those who say ‘I paid into Social Security for years and all I want is what I’m entitled to,’ I reply, ‘You’ve been robbed — get over it.’ If you want to know who robbed you, it’s called Congress. If you’re angry about that then go into the voting booth and throw them out. Meanwhile some poor young fry cook at McDonald’s is having his wages garnished to support the lifestyle of tennis playing Botox dowagers in Palm Springs. Is this right?” –venture capitalist Bill Frezza

Regulatory Commissars: They Knew Drilling Ban Would Kill Jobs

August 28, 2010

With unemployment hovering at 9.5 percent — real total unemployment, called U6, is much higher — what’s another 23,000 jobs lost? Apparently, not much to Barack Obama. Previously unreleased documents show that his administration issued the federal moratorium on deepwater drilling despite knowing the ban would kill thousands of jobs. According to The Wall Street Journal, the documents reveal that Michael Bromwich, the head regulator of offshore oil exploration, told Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar that the temporary ban “would result in ‘lost direct employment’ affecting approximately 9,450 workers and ‘lost jobs from indirect and induced effects’ affecting about 13,797 more.”

Also, regardless of confirmation from the region of the moratorium’s devastating impact, the government says the ban will continue. That’s right — the beatings will continue until morale improves. Reflecting its typical “we know best” disdain for the peasants, the administration has even claimed the impact wasn’t as bad as industry experts said. Try telling that to those 23,000 former workers.

In related news, House Republican Leader John Boehner has called on Obama to fire Treasury Secretary Tim “Tax Cheat” Geithner, National Economic Council Head Larry Summers, and the rest of the White House economic team. (Senior Economic Adviser Christina Romer and Budget Director Peter Orszag have already abandoned ship.) Pointing to “job-killing tax hike[s],” skyrocketing spending and a penchant for new regulations, Boehner said, “We’ve tried 19 months of government-as-community organizer. It hasn’t worked.” A political chess move to be sure, but we won’t argue that government-as-community organizer is getting rather expensive.

Epic fail obama:Obama administration continued its apology tour…

August 28, 2010

Administration Hammers U.S. on Human Rights

The Obama administration continued its apology tour last Friday when it submitted a 29-page report to the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, offering a critique of the state of human rights in the U.S. The report is part of the UN Human Rights Council’s “Universal Periodic Review” — the part of the show where nations grade their own records on human rights. Of course, the fact that such virtuous champions of human rights as China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Libya and Cuba occupy seats on the Council exposes this as a farce.

The administration laments, “We are not satisfied with a situation where the unemployment rate for African Americans is 15.8%, for Hispanics 12.4%, and for whites 8.8%.” Is anyone satisfied with that? On the other hand, the report lauds the election of our nation’s first black president; the passage of ObamaCare, which “makes great strides toward the goal that all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care”; and the financial overhaul, which addresses “predatory” and “discriminatory” lending. If he does say so himself!

The report also praises its author’s intentions of closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay and ending the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. So the only things Obama finds worth lauding are the passage of leftist agenda items and the personality cult surrounding his own election. For the first time in his life, it seems, he’s actually proud to be an American. Sort of.

DOVE HUNTING USHERS IN COLORADO’S FALL HUNTING SEASONS

August 28, 2010

I might suggest Wellington State Wildlife Area, and not just the most accessible area.

DENVER, Colo. –After months of anticipation, hunters can celebrate the beginning of Colorado’s small-game hunting seasons when dove season opens statewide Wednesday, Sept. 1.  An abundant dove population coupled with nearly 170,000 acres of “free” walk-in hunting access will offer ample opportunities for eager wing shooters.

“This year’s dove season looks very promising,” said Ed Gorman, Division of Wildlife small-game manager.  “Bird numbers are good and we haven’t had any significant cold weather in August to expedite migration.   If this trend continues, there should be an excellent number of doves out there for the season opener.”

Approximately 14,000 hunters participate in Colorado’s dove season annually, making the small, fast-flying birds one of the state’s most popular and sought-after small-game species.

“Doves pose a significant challenge for even the most experienced and skilled shotgun enthusiast,” said Mark Cousins, DOW hunter education coordinator.  “In most cases, people miss more birds than they bring home, but a little practice goes a long way to improving success.  There is still some time for hunters to get out there and shoot a box or two of shells at the local sporting clays course before opening day.”

Colorado is home to three species of doves: the native mourning dove, the native white-winged dove, and the nonnative Eurasian collared-dove.

In addition to their popularity among hunters, doves are also Colorado’s most plentiful game bird and are widely dispersed throughout the state. Doves are most abundant in the plains areas east of I-25, and according to annual harvest surveys, hunters in Weld, Morgan, Adams, Arapahoe, Logan, Larimer, Yuma, Pueblo, Otero and Prowers counties harvest the greatest number of birds.

Although plentiful, doves are affected greatly by changes in the weather. One major cold front can trigger migration, causing the fair-weather birds to flee south to New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and Mexico.  Therefore, Gorman offers the following caveat to hunters:

“Hunt early and often, particularly in northeast Colorado where doves typically begin migrating by late August,” Gorman said. “Hunters should also pay close attention to the weather in the upcoming days and weeks.  While it is rare that a cool front will result in a mass migration, extended cool weather can reduce the numbers of doves and, more commonly, change distribution in certain areas.”

As the season progresses, Gorman says hunters should follow the birds as they move south.

“As dove populations decrease in northern Colorado, dove numbers in the southeast are building, offering great late-season opportunity into October,” said Gorman.

The DOW has opened more than 170,000 acres of private land to hunters through its early-season Walk-In Access program to provide even greater opportunities and land access to dove and other small-game hunters.

Beginning this year, small-game hunters are no longer required to purchase permits to hunt Walk-In Access properties.  WIA properties are now open to all hunters who possess a valid small-game license.

“Removing the barrier of the access fee makes this already successful program even better,” said Gorman.  “In addition, hunters who plan accordingly and do some pre-season scouting could be well rewarded on some of these WIA properties.”

Early-season WIA properties open Sept. 1, and many offer good opportunities for dove hunting. For best results, hunters should search for properties supporting food crops, including wheat stubble, proso-millet stubble and sunflower fields.  Areas located near water and roosting sites should also hold good numbers of doves, helping hunters to fill the generous 15-bird daily bag limit.

Colorado’s dove season runs from Sept. 1 through Nov. 9, statewide.

Small-game and upland hunters can also look forward to the debut of the following hunting seasons in the upcoming days and weeks:

Turkey
Sept. 1-Oct. 3 (West of I-25 and Game Management Units 140)
Sept. 1-Oct. 22 (East of I-25, excluding Game Management Unit 140)

Blue (Dusky) Grouse
Sept. 1-Nov. 21 (all Game Management Units west of I-25

Teal
Sept. 12-20 (Lake and Chaffee Counties and east of I-25

Chukar
Sept. 1-Nov. 28 (statewide)

Pheasant and Quail
Nov. 13 (season ending dates vary, please see 2010 Small Game Brochure for details)

The Colorado Division of Wildlife reminds small-game hunters to have a safe 2010-11 hunting season and to be mindful of the following regulations and advisories before heading into the field:

Walk-In Access Program Atlas

The 2010 “early-season” Walk-In Access Program Brochure/Atlas is available at any authorized license agent or DOW office.  An electronic version is also available on the DOW website at:
http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/SmallGame/WalkInAccess/

The Walk-In Atlas provides detailed descriptions of each property, including the type of cover crop (corn, grass, wheat stubble, etc.) and offers other useful information and tips for hunters.

Eurasian collared-doves

Beginning this September, hunters may shoot Eurasian collared-doves year-round and enjoy unlimited bag and possession limits for this species.

Native to Asia, Eurasian collared-doves are a relative newcomer to Colorado and are considered an invasive species in the United States.  In the mid-1970s, Eurasian collared-doves were introduced to the Bahaman Islands, spread to Florida and have expanded their range across the United States during the last three decades.  The doves migrated to Colorado in the mid-1990s and have adapted well to Colorado’s variable climate.  Unlike native dove species, Eurasian doves remain in Colorado year-round. Unlimited bag and possession limits and a year-round season have been established to help control their population.

Photos of Eurasian collared-doves are available here:

Harvest Information Program (HIP)

All small-game hunters must register with the Harvest Information Program before hunting anywhere in Colorado.  The HIP is a joint effort between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the DOW, and it is designed to improve small-game migratory bird-harvest estimates. Colorado requires all small-game hunters to sign up with HIP to help the Division better estimate harvest for species that are difficult to address through a general small-game survey.   Hunters may obtain HIP numbers by calling 1-866-COLOHIP (265-6447) or by going to the Colorado HIP website at:
https://www.colohip.com/.

HIP numbers must be written in the space provided on small-game licenses.

Mourning Dove Banding Program

The DOW, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and 12 other states are participating in a mourning dove banding project. This effort is part of a nationwide program to help biologists determine annual survival rates, harvest rates and distribution of the harvest, as well as to refine techniques for future dove-banding programs.  Throughout the summer, doves were trapped, fitted with aluminum, individually numbered leg bands and then released.

To assist with this research, the DOW is asking dove hunters to look for leg bands on the mourning doves they shoot. Hunters are a critical link in this mourning dove banding study. By checking all harvested doves for bands and reporting banded doves, hunters help biologists manage this important migratory game bird. Because dove bands are small, hunters can easily overlook the bands, so all birds should be checked carefully. Hunters may encounter doves banded by other states as well.

Hunters who harvest banded doves are asked to report the band number to the Federal Bird Banding Laboratory (www.reportband.gov or 1-800-327-BAND).

Rattlesnake Warning

Early-season hunters need to be aware of rattlesnakes.  Hunters with dogs should be particularly mindful of their surroundings. If a dog is bitten by a rattlesnake, take the dog to a veterinarian immediately.  A veterinarian can perform the appropriate medical analysis, treatments and inject anti-venom if needed.  Dogs can now be vaccinated against rattlesnake bites. But if bitten, even vaccinated dogs should be taken to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Socialist Bourgeoisie

August 19, 2010

Obama and the Socialist Bourgeoisie

“I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.” –Benjamin Franklin

If there is one generalization that can be accurately asserted about Barack Hussein Obama and generations of Marxists before him, it is that they are and always have been, universally, hypocrites. They preach classist sermons to the masses, the foundational fodder upon which their failed socialist regimes are constructed, all while living lavish lifestyles characterized by elitism and overly conspicuous consumption.

This generalization holds not just for Western socialists, but also for their Soviet-era mentors, of which I am a first-hand witness.

In 1987, I stepped off an Aeroflot Tu-124 at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, grateful that the “aircraft” had made it all the way to our destination. My moment of gratitude was abruptly interrupted at the bottom of the aircraft steps by two pallid gents in off-the-rack suits who were accompanied by two humorless uniformed Militsiya regulars.

Apparently, my reputation had preceded me.

The suited fellows, representatives of the Soviet Committee for State Security, offered not so much as a simple “welcome.” Rather, they insisted that I turn over my credentials and possessions, and accompany them for an “interview.” We left the airport and drove to an aging gray building in central Moscow directly across from the Kremlin.

Once inside the building, my hosts informed me that I was a “guest” of the state, and would remain so until such time they determined I could leave. I was taken to a third-floor room, rather sparse in its furnishings, where I remained for three days. Though the accommodations were not up to Bedouin tent standards, the room did have a window with a splendid view of two entrances into the Kremlin.

Through that window by night shined the ominous Red Star atop Spasskaya Tower. By day, I could observe all the movement into and out of the Kremlin.

There was a sea of ubiquitous Soviet state-made autos making their way through the plaza in front of the Kremlin — Volgas, Ladas and Moskvichs, most of which were as old as (and in no better operating condition) than the Tu-124 on which I had arrived. What I recall most was how that sea of decrepit autos parted with regularity to allow unhindered passage of shiny ZIL-117 curtained limousines carting members of the Soviet Politicheskoye Byuro on their way to elegant meals in stylish places that no common Soviet citizen could enter.

Surely the great vision of human liberation from capitalism envisioned by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels did not include limousine liberals?

Shortly after the Demo’s 2008 “October Surprise,” that politically fortuitous collapse of the U.S. securities markets that Obama rode into office, I recall one of his earliest condemnations of corporate execs “flying around the nation on private jets” while their companies were sinking into bankruptcy.

At the time, Obama had just stepped off the most expensive luxury jet in the world, Air Force One, which costs far more to operate and maintain for every minute of flight than the largest of corporate jets cost for hours, or even days, of flight. Just like his socialist mentors, Obama acknowledged not even a hint of the hypocrisy.

Since then, he has logged many, many more hours on Air Force One, in transit to more luxurious vacation destinations and elite political confabs than any nouveau riche lucky lottery winner has in first class seats to Vegas — and all while our nation is sinking into bankruptcy.

Obama is just the latest of the Socialist Bourgeoisie political aristocracy to occupy the White House, the first being Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who did more to undermine liberty and free enterprise than any president — until Obama. (I suspect Rahm Emanuel plagiarized Obama’s rule number one, “Never allow a crisis to go to waste,” from FDR.)

According to Marxist doctrine, manifest in Obama’s classist rhetoric, the bourgeoisie are defined as the dominant ruling-class who control the means of production in a capitalist economy and abuse the proletariat to produce their wealth.

However, what Marx didn’t have was the benefit of observing a mature free enterprise system in operation under a constitutional democratic republic from which strong and healthy middle class economies arise. So strong is the middle class in the U.S. and other industrialized nations, that modern Socialists now use the term “bourgeoisie” to pejoratively depict middle class consumerism.

What Marx unwittingly defined is the nature of Socialist government barons like Obama and his czars, where the dominant ruling class are those in political power who regulate the means of economic production through regulation and taxation in order to reduce the ranks of the middle class and thereby increase the proletariat masses, those to whom the ruling political class can discriminately transfer wealth in return for re-election … until the wealth runs out.

Unfortunately for the proletariat, this transfer of wealth is not sustainable, and the only equality achieved is impoverishment of everyone except the Socialist Bourgeoisie — trickle-up poverty.

That was precisely the result of socialism in the USSR and every other nation where politburos have centralized control over the economy leading to bankrupted nations, all the while, living themselves like the tyrant kings and potentates they ostensibly decry.

And so it is with the Obamas who, along with their Kobe beef-eating entourage, are preparing for their eighth vacation this year — this one to exclusive Martha’s Vineyard for the next 10 days. Maybe this time the family dog Bo will be able to travel on the same plane as his masters and not have to settle for a separate taxpayer-provided Gulfstream 3, as was the case when the Obama’s vacationed in fashionable Bar Harbor, Maine, in July.

As free enterprise bends to the point of breaking under the weight of ever more oppressive taxation and regulation, and statism proceeds to bankrupt the nation, Obama and his Socialist Bourgeoisie are hobnobbing around with the rich and famous. According to his deputy press secretary, “There will be hiking, time at the beach, time at the ice cream store — all the sort of things you do when you’re at Martha’s Vineyard. You enjoy the people and the good food.” And of course, there will be golf at Mink Meadows in Vineyard Haven.

As millions of parents struggle to provide the most basic needs for their children, Barack is eating cake.

While I don’t know what October Surprise the Demos have up their collective sleeve for this fall’s election cycle, I am gravely concerned that, given Obama’s arrogant vacation schedule, it will be more devastating than the mischief they arranged in 2008. However, I remain altogether confident that American Patriots, like our forebears, will defend our Essential Liberty and persevere through whatever trials and foibles arise.

Ron Micheli: Never quit, never surrender!

August 18, 2010

Well folks guess what? Even in Wyoming, yes, Wyoming! Political correctness reached out like a Copperhead… That, and the basic political machinery of our nation… There is a reason that I joined the Libertarian Party back in 1980… We need to break the back of the two party system. It is that simple folks. Sure, reform the Republicans, or even the Democrats. I don’t give a hoot what you call it…

I used to say that once in power that there was not a dimes worth of difference between the two parties. Guess what folks? I was wrong. (Typed / said with a stutter ala “The Fonz.”) I bitched at the Republicans spending like not just drunken, but stoned sailors… No, it’s not a dimes worth, it is in the trillions of dollars!

And, not to mention: While the Republicans threatened to use the Constitution as toilet paper? The Democrats have. At least the Bill of Rights!

Then, we have what happened in Wyoming, of all places..?

Keep your chin up, and hold your head high Ron. You fought the good fight.
