AIRBORNE! Profiles in Valor

September 3, 2009

Hat tip to the pesky one for finding this. Over the years I have been privileged by meeting many Soldiers, Airmen, and Marines that fought in World War Two. Most often while working as a Paramedic, and shuttling them to this or that clinic. To a man, including or even especially those that earned the Medal of Honor, were unassuming and not the least bit  pretentious.

Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, or Spades, the 101st led the way!

We have seen a lot of big splashy memorial services.

I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell “Shifty” Powers.

ATT000951

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy

Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st

Airborne Infantry. If you’ve seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the

History Channel , you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10

episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.

ATT000982

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn’t

know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having

trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was

at the right gate, and noticed the “Screaming Eagle,” the symbol of

the 101st Airborne, on his hat.

Making conversation, I asked him if he’d been in the 101st Airborne

or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the

101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served,

and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said “Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so,

and was in until sometime in 1945 .. . . ” at which point my heart

skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said “I made the 5 training

jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know

where Normandy is?” At this point my heart stopped.

I told him “yes, I know exactly where Normandy is, and I know what

D-Day was.” At that point he said “I also made a second jump into

Holland , into Arnhem .” I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . .

and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of

D-Day..

I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France , and he said

“Yes. And it’s real sad because, these days, so few of the guys are

left, and those that are, lots of them can’t make the trip.” My heart

was in my throat and I didn’t know what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in

Coach while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to

get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came

forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have

it, that I’d take his in coach.

He said “No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are

still some who remember what we did and who still care is enough to

make an old man very happy.” His eyes were filling up as he said it.

And mine are brimming up now as I write this.

Shifty died on June 17, 2009 after fighting cancer.

ATT001013

There was no parade.

No big event in Staples Center .

No wall to wall back to back 24×7 news coverage.

No weeping fans on television.

And that’s not right.

Let’s give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet

way. Please forward this email to everyone you know. Especially to the

veterans.

Rest in peace, Shifty.

Profiles of Valor: U.S. Navy HM2 Simson

August 15, 2009

On July 27, 2007, U.S. Navy HM2 Joshua Simson was patrolling Saret Kholet, Afghanistan, with a joint U.S. and Afghan National Army unit. Simson later recounted that as the unit moved to establish an observation post for a river crossing, “A squad of Afghan National Army had pushed across the river to clear two houses and spotted bad guys. The Afghans fired at them, causing the anti-Afghan forces to initiate their ambush prematurely.” While the Americans and Afghans were in the “kill zone,” they hadn’t progressed so far as to be surrounded. But they still took heavy casualties in the ensuing seven-hour battle. Simson was serving as an advisor on being a medical first responder, and he put his training into action. Soon after the battle began, he pulled a wounded Afghan soldier into a bunker to administer first aid. The bunker took a direct hit, but he kept going. Throughout the battle, Simson said he repeated a sequence of tasks: “See or hear somebody need help, put out suppressive fire, move the man to cover if possible, and render lifesaving aid.” Finally, the unit was able to evacuate the wounded. Simson was awarded the Silver Star for his willingness to expose himself repeatedly to potential injury or death to save wounded soldiers on the battlefield.

Pakistani Taliban head’s death a blow to militants

ISLAMABAD—Pakistan’s Taliban chief was killed by a CIA missile strike, a militant commander confirmed Friday—a severe blow to extremists threatening the stability of this nuclear-armed nation and a possible boost to U.S.-Pakistani cooperation in fighting insurgents who wreak havoc along the Afghan border.Pakistani officials vowed to dismantle the rest of the network run by Baitullah Mehsud regardless of who takes over, a move seen as essential to crippling the violent Islamists behind dozens of suicide attacks and beheadings in the country.

Already, the Taliban were holding a “shura” council in the lawless, rugged South Waziristan tribal region to choose Mehsud’s successor, intelligence officials and militants told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information. It was unclear when they might reach a decision.

Going Swami on us…

June 20, 2009

Is Gunny Bob at 850 KOA radio going swami on us, or might there be something to all this? The situation in Iran has been heating up for quite some time. This didn’t happen overnight and no President can be applauded or blamed for whatever does happen there after things follow the course.

However, as the Iranian’s like to point out on occasion. Who taught them how to fight? I happen to know that many Iranian’s attended several  of the various schools and such here in America. Including different War Colleges, and the School of the America’s. One has to believe that many of those people are still alive and well in Iran. While it would be pure speculation on my part to think that those same people may be operating there it just might be the case. If so, will that be a valid criticism of the United States, as in international meddling yet again? Or might there be more to this than meets the eye? Did Gunny Bob get out a crystal ball? Read on…

GUNNY’S ANALYSIS OF THE IRAN RIOTS: THIS IS NO HOME-GROWN WANNABE REVOLUTION

Long ago, the Gunny was sent to a school that taught students how to overthrow foreign governments. Interesting instructors came from elsewhere to teach the course. In the course, students learned how to destablize a government using provocateurs and other assets to exploit certain domestic situations. Students also learned how the U.S. government has a long history of this sort of activity. And students learned how to recognize “funny business” when they saw it.

Now let’s look at Iran.

(1) Obama has stated that he can not allow the Iranians to have nukes.

(2) Obama knows the Jews will conduct a pre-emptive strike if they deem it necessary.

(3) Obama will not support the Jews if they make such a strike.

(4) Obama knows the Iranians are getting very close to a nuke.

(5) Obama knows the Jews know #4.

(6) Obama knows what will happen to him politically if he allows the Iranians to get nukes.

(7) Obama knows many American targets are well within range of many Iranian weapon systems.

Now, if you were Obama and your CIA told you that they can help arrange riots and massive civil unrest in Iran while allowing you to have culpable deniability that could be reinforced with clever public statements from you, and they said that with some luck the government could fall and thus possibly end the Iranians’ nuke program, would that not be an option you would seriously consider?

The Gunny was just thinking that the situation in Iran right now sure looks a lot like a scenario out of that school he went to long ago.

Iran… How times change

June 19, 2009

I happen to be from that part of America that didn’t know about all the Tom Foolery that was engaged in by my nation and the Shaw of Iran. I am however very well aware of when our embassy was seized, and as the MSM at the time called it; “America held Hostage.”

I also remember the “Coward in Chiefs” utter failure as a leader in responding to the threat. I remember gross inflation, and the government telling us that unemployment was only six percent, when in fact it was a lot closer to twenty…

Now, an incident occurred in the Denver area. Some Iranian expatriates were assaulted, and treated pretty badly. One of the people that encouraged and approved of what had happened screamed about the “Damned Muslims…” Want to know the really sad part about this? They were Iranian refugees that were Christians that had escaped from Iran. From “Arab Muslim” persecution according to Rani. These were not illegal immigrants, not at all.

The United States of America is a nation built upon beliefs and people. The beliefs are the same, and the peoples are many. We come from Ireland, and Scotland, England and Africa, China and Viet Nam, and anywhere else you could choose to look.

Now, while even Pravda has pointed out where America is heading, the people of Iran are rising up.

How times change…

Some good news for a change..?

May 30, 2009

Yes, most folks are all taken up with the news of the day. Arlen Specter involved in a murder investigation. A sexist racist being installed in the Supreme Court. An ugly as hell woman with the voice of an angel losing a damned popularity contest. We have people that are standing up for the ethical use of firearms catching some hell. Not to mention, that this past weekend I won the Chili Cook Off! Ok, there were only three entrants… But, I won! No, that is not the good news that I refer to in the title of this post.

Seems that the Pakistani Army is solidly kicking some terrorist butt! That’s something that few organized Army’s have ever accomplished. Rangers did it to the Lefts Godhead, and it’s happened a few times before. I will address the things that factor into such victories at a later time.

In the mean time?

Things that go boom in the night: Nuclear North Korea

May 28, 2009

Growing up in Oceanside and being a Marine Corps brat I can remember the Cold War only too well. I remember being taught about spent munitions and more importantly what not to do if you happened to come across, say, a mortar round that failed to detonate. If Merry reads this I’m sure she too will remember the class. We did not however, do the celebrated “duck and cover” drills. They would, after all, be useless if indeed we were hit with nuclear weapons.

At North Terrace Elementary School, we had more immediate problems to worry about. We had, as do most schools, bully’s. How to deal with a bully was a lesson that most of us learned the hard way. In a nutshell though, the solution was to place a fist deeply and squarely in the bully’s face prior to him gaining some advantage over you. This is called a preemptive defense, and generally was good for at least a swat from Mister Trainer (sp?), the Principle. A sore butt was well worth having the bully off your back seemingly forever. Perhaps that was my introduction to political economics? The point though, is that it worked.

What does this schoolyard scenario have to do with North Korea? The analogy should be easy to define. North Korea is a bully nation. North Korea is also now a bully that has a big stick called nuclear weaponry. The United Nations is much like the teachers that used to insist that you “talk things out” with the schoolyard bully’s. Talking things over with North Korea only embolden ‘s them, just like it would embolden the bully in the schoolyard. Not to mention that this bully has a few friends called China,  Iran and Syria. Not real friends of course. They just want a big stick also, or, in China’s case it’s more like an errant cousin that you’re stuck with defending even when you know that the cousin is an insane jerk.

Preemptive defense got a bum rap when George Bush sent the United States into an unneeded war with Iraq that we are still entangled with. That however, is not a problem with the doctrine. It is the result of some very poor judgment on the part of the powers that be at the time it was used. That very same doctrine may be what is needed to tame a tiger before it grows to large to tame. The use of surgical strikes that are so devastating that the North Koreans will never again be a threat to anyone beyond it’s borders may be the only solution for a world that is weary of the games being played by others with the lives of others. Simultaneous actions toward Iran and Syria might get the attention of the various up and coming would be world conquerors as well.

Will that happen while we have as President a man that would rather talk than fight? Who refuses to defend the nation from criminal invaders and blames another nations inability to control it’s criminals on the people of the United States? For some reason I am thinking that a man that bows to Kings will not have the honor or integrity to stand up to a schoolyard bully. One that threatens the entire world… Indeed, he would much rather disarm the very people that he swore an oath to defend.

Profiles of Valor: U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Rhyner

May 2, 2009

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Zachary Rhyner of the 21st Special Tactics Squadron was serving in Operation Enduring Freedom when his unit fell under attack on 6 April 2008. Rhyner’s mission included a team of 12 Special Forces Troops who were dropped from helicopters in Shok Valley, Afghanistan, in order to take out an insurgent group. The jihadis gained the high ground, however. During the six-hour battle that followed, Rhyner, despite being injured, fought hard and provided “suppressive fire with his M-4 rifle against enemy fire while fellow teammates were extracted from the line of fire,” according to his award citation. In addition to cover fire, Rhyner coordinated more than 50 aerial attacks on the enemy. His actions helped save the lives of many American and Afghan troops. In December, 10 soldiers received the Silver Star for their heroism in that battle — the largest such number for a single battle since the Vietnam War. Sgt. Rhyner recently received the Air Force Cross, the highest decoration awarded by the service and the first in six years.

Petty Officer Danny Dietz Memorial Highway

April 4, 2009

The story of Danny Dietz is one of courage and honor. I have it under the Valhalla heading for any that are interested in learning more about him. I recieved more hate mail for that piece than just about any other story I have ever posted about. I also got more then a few thanking me for getting the word out. Including three from current and former lawmakers.

Colorado stepped up to the plate and hit a home run by dedicating a much traveled road after him.

H/T the Denver Post, even broken clocks are correct twice a day! 😀

Lawmakers choked back tears Friday as they honored a slain naval officer by renaming a stretch of South Santa Fe Drive in his honor.

The road from C-470 to Interstate 25 will be known as Petty Officer Danny Dietz Memorial Highway.

Dietz grew up in Littleton and graduated from Heritage High School.

His family laughed when Sen. Mike Kopp R-Littleton, told how Dietz wanted to be Ninja warrior when he grew up. Instead, he became a Navy SEAL.

Kopp recounted Dietz’s death in 2005 after a gun battle with the Taliban in Afghanistan
