COLORADO COYOTES HAVE LITTERS DURING APRIL AND MAY: Living with wildlife

April 14, 2009

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It is becoming more common to hear about coyote sightings in residential areas in Colorado, including neighborhoods in Colorado Springs, Monument, and other communities in the Pikes Peak region.  People call the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) with questions about their safety, their children’s safety, and the safety of their pets.

“Most conflicts between people and coyotes occur when coyotes are able to find food near human residences,” explained Sabrina Schnelker, a district wildlife manager with the DOW.

Coyotes have litters during April and May, delivering an average of five or six pups. During this time of year, adult coyotes need to travel farther and forage more to feed their young.  This can lead to increased aggressiveness, especially near a den site, said Schnelker, who has seen an upswing in sightings.

Food left out for other animals often gets eaten by opportunistic coyotes.  These adaptable predators have learned that in addition to rodents and other small mammals, they can hunt domestic pets in residential neighborhoods.  In either case, the result is that when coyotes lose their natural wariness of the human environment, they can become aggressive towards people.

The DOW strongly discourages feeding wild animals, including coyotes.  In fact, feeding coyotes and foxes is illegal in urban areas.

Schnelker reminds people to maintain awareness around their yard when letting pets out, or when children are playing.  When walking pets, residents should keep dogs on a short leash.  Use of longer, retractable leashes is discouraged in areas frequented by coyotes.

If dogs are left outside during the day, it is recommended a fully enclosed kennel (sides and a top) be used to exclude wild animals.  Installing motion detector lights or floodlights is encouraged in areas where pets frequently go in the low light hours.

Children should be taught that coyotes and foxes are wild animals and they should never attempt to approach them.

What to do if a coyote approaches you:

Be as Big, Mean, and Loud as possible
-Wave your arms and throw objects at the coyote
-Shout in a deep, loud and authoritative voice
-DO NOT RUN or turn your back on the coyote
-Face the coyote and back away slowly
-If attacked, fight back with your fists and feet

The DOW encourages people in the Colorado Springs area to call (719) 227-5200 if they encounter an aggressive coyote.  If the incident occurs after business hours, contact your local law enforcement agency or the Colorado State Patrol Dispatch Center at (719) 544-2424 and they will notify a wildlife officer.

Ted Nugent and the French…

April 11, 2009

While surfing around WordPress I found this. It is just to good not to pass on to others! Enjoy!

p.s. I think this is humor, and didn’t really happen.

Ya Gotta Love Ted

Ted Nugent, rock star and avid bow hunter from Michigan , was being
interviewed by a French journalist, an animal rights activist. The
discussion came around to deer hunting. The journalist asked, ‘ What
do you think is the last thought in the head of a deer before you
shoot him? Is it, ‘ Are you my friend? ‘ or is it ‘ Are you the one
who killed my brother? ‘ Nugent replied, ‘ Deer aren ‘ t capable of
that kind of thinking. All they care about is, what am I going to eat
next, who am I going to screw next, and can I run fast enough to get
away. They are very much like the French. ‘ The interview ended.

Health Plan Threatens to Feed Your Gun-related Data Into a National
Database
--- And charge you $10,000 a year for the privilege

Gun Owners of America E-Mail Alert
8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151
Phone: 703-321-8585 / FAX: 703-321-8408
http://www.gunowners.org

Thursday, April 2, 2009

In a year when trillion dollar bailouts have become routine, many
Americans have become almost numb to our acceleration towards socialism.

But gun rights activists aren't in that crowd, and so GOA has to inform
you of yet ANOTHER threat to your privacy, the Second Amendment, and
even your wallet.

It is called an "individual mandate" or, alternatively, the
"Massachusetts plan." And over the weekend, both the
Washington Post
and the New York Times worked hard to build momentum for it.

First, a little history.

We alerted you a few weeks ago to the gun control provisions in the
stimulus bill that President Obama signed in February. Our government
will now spend between $12 and $20 BILLION to require the medical
community to retroactively put our most confidential medical records
into a government database -- a database that could easily be used to
deny veterans (and other law-abiding Americans) who have sought
psychiatric treatment for things such as PTSD.

Currently, gun owners can avoid getting caught in this database by
refusing to purchase health insurance or by purchasing insurance with a
carrier that has not signed an agreement with the government to place
your records in a national database.

But that's all about to change. A budget resolution -- to be voted on
this Friday in the Senate -- will be the first domino in a process that
could FORCE you to buy government-approved insurance, thus making it
impossible to avoid the medical database.

Put another way: If you do not have health insurance -- or,
potentially, if you do not have the TYPE of health insurance the
government wants you to have -- the government will force you to
purchase what it regards as "acceptable" health insurance.
And, in most
cases, you will have to pay for it out of your own pocket.

What would all this cost? Based on comparable insurance currently on
the market, it could cost $10,000 a year -- or more.

If you were jobless, the socialists would probably spot you the ten
grand. But if you are middle class and can't pay $10,000 because of
your mortgage payments, your small business, or your kids' college
education, you would be fined (over $1,000 a year currently in
Massachusetts). And, if you couldn't pay the confiscatory fine, you
could ultimately be imprisoned.

Scary, you say. But why is this a Second Amendment issue? Under the
Massachusetts plan, your MANDATED insurance carrier has to feed your
medical data into a centralized database -- freely accessible by the
government under federal privacy laws.

So... remember when your pediatrician asked your kid if you have a
firearm in the home? Or when your dad was given a prescription for
Zoloft because of his Alzheimer's? Or when your wife mentioned to her
gynecologist that she had regularly smoked marijuana ten years ago?

All of this would be in a centralized database. And all of it could
potentially be used to vastly expand the "prohibited persons" list
maintained by the FBI in West Virginia.

How serious a threat is this?

If it gets into the budget resolution the Senate will consider on
Friday, it will be almost impossible to strip out later. It will be as
much of a done-deal as the stimulus package was.

We have asked senators to introduce language to prohibit such an
individual mandate for socialized medicine that would violate the
privacy of gun owners. In the absence of such an amendment, we are
asking senators to vote against the budget resolution.

ACTION: Write your U.S. Senators. Urge them to vote against the budget
resolution if it does not contain language prohibiting a mandate that
Americans buy government-approved health insurance against their will.

Please use the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center at
http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm to send your Senators the
pre-written e-mail message below.

----- Pre-written letter -----

Dear Senator:

A budget resolution that could end up requiring Americans to purchase
expensive health insurance policies against their will is truly
frightening.

And equally alarming is the fact that such mandated health care coverage
could easily become a shill for gun control.

Potentially, anyone who does not have health insurance-- or does not
have the TYPE of health insurance the government wants them to have --
will be forced to purchase "acceptable" health insurance and
pay for it
out of our own pockets.

Based on the cost of comparable insurance currently on the market, that
could cost $10,000 a year -- or more.

That's bad enough. But far worse, such a "Massachusetts Plan" would
MANDATE that an insurance carrier feed medical data into a centralized
database -- freely accessible by the government under federal privacy
laws.

Hence, a kid's statement to his pediatrician about his parents'
firearms... or a dad's prescription for Zoloft because of his
Alzheimer's... or a wife's statement to her gynecologist about her
regular use of marijuana ten years ago... could all turn up in a federal
database and unconstitutionally expand the list of "prohibited
persons."
Individuals would have no ability to opt out.

For all of these reasons, if the budget resolution does not contain
language prohibiting an "individual mandate" regarding health
care, I
would ask that you oppose the budget resolution.

Sincerely,

DEFEND YOUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS:

HSUS Tries To Slip One Past Country Fans

March 22, 2009

This is great! It has been really way too long since I have been able to tag something as stupid is as stupid does! 😀

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the most radical animal “rights” and anti-hunting organization in the country, has been quietly trying to get Carrie Underwood voted Entertainer of the Year via the Academy of Country Music. The problem is, a large percentage of country music fans are also gun owners and hunters who do not like Carrie Underwood’s active support for HSUS. And HSUS knows it.

Underwood and American Idol have already listed HSUS as a beneficiary of the proceeds of one of her songs and now HSUS is enlisting their radical animal rights supporters to vote for her in the Entertainer of the Year contest. But they are trying to keep it quiet. In an e-mail sent out to supporters by Kathy Bauch, the HSUS Senior Director for Corporate Relations & Promotions, she asked people to vote for Underwood, but added, “Feel free to distribute this to friends and family, but please don’t post to lists, twitter, etc.–anything that would identify that HSUS is urging people to vote for her, or it could just breathe life into the opposition.”

Oops, too late!

Perhaps someone should tell the folks at HSUS that e-mails are not exactly the most secure way of communicating their “secret” agendas.

Country music fans who do not appreciate Underwood’s support for HSUS should go to http://www.cbs.com/specials/acma/vote/ and vote for an entertainer who shares their values and supports America’s hunting heritage

GET READY FOR SPRING TURKEY HUNTING

March 21, 2009

GET READY FOR SPRING TURKEY HUNTING; SEASON STARTS APRIL 11

Colorado’s spring turkey season offers hunters one of the most unique experiences in the field.

From late April through mid May, turkeys are at the height of their mating season. The hens are calling for the toms, and the toms are on the move looking for mates and putting on their displays of wild machismo.

“There is nothing else like hunting turkeys,” says Tom Spezze, southwest regional manager for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. “You call them in, the toms are making all kinds of noises spitting and drumming, and they’ll get right next to you. It’s incredibly exhilarating.”

The 2009 spring turkey season starts April 11 and continues through May 24, although dates vary in some units. Over-the-counter licenses can be purchased for most units in the state; but some areas are limited so be sure to check the 2009 turkey hunting brochure.

Turkey hunters can use shotguns and bows during the spring hunt. Shots are usually made within 30 yards of a bird. Hunters must be sure of their targets–only toms can be hunted during the spring.

Because turkeys are very wary and spook easily, hunters are allowed to dress in full camouflage. One note of caution: Because hunters wear camouflage, turkey hunting can be dangerous in popular areas. As with every other type of hunting, only shoot at what you see and clearly identify. If you shoot in the direction of a sound you might be shooting at another hunter making a call. If you need to signal to another hunter the best method is to whistle.

Turkeys roost in trees at night so the hunter’s first task is to locate the resting spot. Spezze recommends that hunters arrive near the roost just before dawn and find a place to set up without spooking the birds. Hens welcome the day with a very sleepy “tree call.”  The toms will gobble in response to nearly every hen call made in the roost. After adequately announcing the day, the birds will fly down from the roost once light is full. Then they’ll begin calling to gather the flock for the day.

Seasoned spring turkey hunters will usually begin calling to the toms before any of the birds fly down in an effort to direct them away from the roosted hens.

A common mistake turkey hunters make is “over-calling,” says Spezze. Hunters should only imitate the various calls the turkeys are making at that moment.

“Nothing scares off an already-wary tom more than calls that are too loud or too frequent,” Spezze says.

As toms approach, the hunter must sit absolutely still. Any shot must be executed very quickly. Shotgun pellets won’t penetrate a turkey’s plumage, so the aim must be at the head and neck.

Two types of turkeys live in Colorado. The Merriam’s turkey lives primarily in the mountains, while the Rio Grande turkey lives on the flat lands east of I-25. Populations of both types of turkey are healthy and have been growing during the last few years.

The Merriam’s turkey is partial to open meadows and usually roosts in ponderosa pine trees. They can also be found in oak brush and pinon-juniper stands. Hunters should find areas where turkeys have cover, forage and nesting habitat. Look for meadows in narrow valleys where there are grassy areas, aspen groves and ponderosa pines. The Merriam’s, however, are wanderers and will roam over large areas.

The Rio Grande is the larger of the two birds and can usually be found in cottonwood trees and along riparian areas. The birds are creatures of habit, often roosting in the same tree and feeding in the same fields every day. Rio Grande turkeys are easier to locate than Merriam’s and hunting them is generally not as difficult.

Turkeys forage for seeds, grasses, forbs and insects. Hens usually nest in tall grass and prefer to be near a water source.

Hunters should scout areas looking for sign– tracks, feathers, droppings, scratching and dusting areas. Even if turkeys are not seen or heard, it’s a good bet to hunt in places where there are lots of fresh sign.

Turkey calls also are essential–box calls, slates and mechanical-plunger calls are easy to use.

Your calling position should have a solid back as wide as your shoulders while providing you with a wide area of visibility. Don’t hide so well that you can’t see what’s happening in front of you.

Hunters should not try to stalk turkeys in the spring because chances of success are slim. Set up in a somewhat concealed location and wait for the birds to come to you.

Hunting in the morning is typical, but toms can also be called in late in the afternoon. So don’t hesitate to hunt late in the day.

The long season also works to hunters’ advantage. Some of the best hunting occurs late in the season when hens are on the nest. If you miss opening day, you won’t be missing your chance to get a turkey.

This “right of spring” is an experience that turkey hunters look forward to every year.  Successful hunters are rewarded with fine, lean meat. With careful cooking, wild turkey makes an excellent and highly nutritious meal.

Judge Blocks Rule Permitting Concealed Guns In U.S. Parks

March 20, 2009

The usual suspects are back at it using the courts to thwart the liberty of others as well as  undermine the ability of decent people to defend themselves and others. The national Parks, like our schools and colleges, are free fire zones for criminals. But, the Brady Bunch would prefer for you to be bitten by bears or sodomized by social misfits rather than be capable of properly and effectively defending yourself, your family, and other innocent people.

A federal judge yesterday blocked a last-minute rule enacted by President George W. Bush allowing visitors to national parks to carry concealed weapons.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly issued a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit brought by gun-control advocates and environmental groups. The Justice Department had sought to block the injunction against the controversial rule.

The three groups that brought the suit — the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the National Parks Conservation Association and the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees — argued that the Bush action violated several laws.

In her ruling, Kollar-Kotelly agreed that the government’s process had been “astoundingly flawed.”

An Important Message From Gun Owners Of America
— Land grab bill coming back, again

Gun Owners of America E-Mail Alert
8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151
Phone: 703-321-8585 / FAX: 703-321-8408
http://www.gunowners.org

Monday, March 16, 2009

Do you agree with people like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, who treat
the Second Amendment as if it were written only to protect your ability
to go hunting and target shooting?

Or do you agree with Gun Owners of America, George Washington and Thomas
Jefferson, who believe that the Second Amendment protects a pre-existing
fundamental right that is essential to the preservation of liberty?

Well, a whole lot of people in Congress are claiming to protect your
Second Amendment rights, but all they’re really doing is protecting your
hunting season.

We’re talking about the Omnibus Public Lands Act. You helped to defeat
this bill last week in the House, but Congressional leaders have vowed
to bring it up again soon.

S. 22 is an enormous package of over 190 bills lumped together with a
price tag of $10 billion. The bill will greatly expand the amount of
land controlled by the National Park Service, thus spreading the
agency’s unconstitutional gun regulations to more areas.

Fear of upsetting gun owners — who helped elect many members of
Congress from both parties — kept this bill off the floor for several
weeks.

Then, in a meeting last Tuesday, not held in an open committee hearing
but behind closed doors, House leaders brokered a deal with some
supposedly pro-gun Democrats.

They said they were concerned about your gun rights. They said they
were going to “fix” the bill.

But they did not address the NPS anti-gun regulations that prohibit
carrying a firearm for self defense without a government issued
concealed carry permit.

What did they do? They added language to the bill to say you can still
go hunting.

That’s right. Many Congressmen claimed to be protecting the Second
Amendment, when all they were really doing was thumbing their noses at
self defense.

Here is the entire “pro-gun” amendment that was considered in
the House.
Judge for yourself if this really protects your Second Amendment rights:

“Nothing in this Title shall be construed as affecting the authority,
jurisdiction, or responsibility of the several States to manage,
control, or regulate fish and resident wildlife under State law or
regulations, including the regulation of hunting, fishing, trapping, and
recreational shooting. Nothing in this Title shall be construed as
limiting access for hunting, fishing, trapping, or recreational
shooting.”

They may as well have called it the “Elmer Fudd Protection Act.”

A lot of people who voted for this bill campaigned for office as
champions of gun rights. They said “Send me to Washington; I’ll fight
for the Second Amendment.” And this is what we get? Pathetic.

But let’s be clear. The issue is not just about the NPS gun
restrictions, as bad as they are. And whether or not you personally use
federal land is not the point.

What is important is the disdain with which legislators hold your Second
Amendment rights.

It is imperative that you speak up on this issue. The outcome of this
battle will be a preview of what we can expect for the next two years.
Will your gun rights be comprised away little by little? Or will we
stand together and hold legislators accountable to their campaign
promises to uphold the Second Amendment?

This week there may be several votes in both the Senate and House on the
Omnibus Land bill.

Congressional leaders plan to act quickly in an attempt to ram this down
the throat of the American people without a fair and open process. They
desperately want to avoid any amendment that would truly protect your
gun rights.

Congress hopes to leave the gun ban in place, and enlarge the areas
affected by it. For example, the bill expands existing park land,
creates new national trails that will fall under the gun restrictions,
and authorizes the federal government to buy more land adjacent to
national parks and trails.

House and Senate leaders plan to move on this bill rapidly, although
they are ambiguous about the process.

But our message to Congress is simple: Stop playing around with our
Second Amendment rights!

We don’t care about the process. We care about the Second Amendment.
And we mean ALL of the Second Amendment, not just hunting.

Tell Congress you expect them to protect your right to keep and bear
arms without compromising. Please take a few seconds and send the
pre-written message below.

When you’re done, become a force multiplier. Send this alert to a few
friends.

It is important that you take this action because right now GOA is the
only gun rights organization speaking out for ALL of your Second
Amendment rights.

We’ve all forwarded jokes or funny pictures to our friends. How about
forwarding a message to help protect our God-ordained constitutionally
protected right to keep and bear arms?

And please do not think your voice won’t be heard. Remember, this bill
failed to pass the House by just two votes last week because people like
you took action.

Congressmen need to know that their votes in the coming days will impact
YOUR vote next year. But if they don’t hear from you and they think
you’re not looking, many will treat your rights with contempt.

We’re not alone in this battle. In the Senate, pro-gun champions such
as Sens. Tom Coburn and Jim DeMint are prepared to lead the fight
against this bill.

In the House, Reps. Paul Broun, Rob Bishop and Doc Hastings are among
those fighting hard for your gun rights.

In fact, there are many in Congress willing to stand up for the Second
Amendment, but they are repeatedly squashed by the anti-gun leadership
or undermined by pro-gun compromisers. Pro-gun Congressmen who want to
repeal the gun ban are being told, in effect, to “Shut up and
vote!”

Friends, we know we’ve asked for a lot of action from you already this
year.

Unfortunately, that is not going to stop. But we will all draw the line
at some point. Let’s work together and do it now.

Thank you for working with Gun Owners of America. Our effectiveness in
Washington depends on your activism. PLEASE try to get your pro-gun
friends and family involved. Now more than ever, every voice is
critical.

ACTION: Please use the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center at
http://gunowners.org/activism.htm to tell your Representative and
Senators to reject the lands bill (S. 22) unless your Second Amendment
rights are protected. Per usual, a pre-written letter is provided for
your convenience.

—– Pre-written message —–

The Omnibus Public Land Act of 2009 is expected to come to the floor
soon.

I urge you to oppose this bill if, as expected, the leadership does not
allow an amendment to repeal the anti-gun regulations of the National
Park Service.

Recent changes made by the Interior Department only allow persons with a
concealed carry permit to possess a self-defense firearm on NPS land.
Non-permit holders are still prohibited from carrying a firearm for
their protection.

And please don’t be fooled by a supposedly pro-gun amendment to
“fix”
the bill that was brought up last week during the House debate on S. 22.
That language only modestly protects hunting and recreational shooting.

While protecting the rights of sportsmen is important, the Second
Amendment is NOT about hunting rights. I am more concerned about my
ability to defend my life, and the lives of my loved ones, than I am
about plinking cans.

Congressional leaders have been ambiguous about how this legislation
will come to the floor, but my message to you is clear: protect ALL of
my Second Amendment rights.

Please OPPOSE final passage on any land bill that does not repeal the
NPS gun ban.

Sincerely,

****************************
