Attracting Mountain Lions

February 4, 2009

Living with wildlife is an ongoing theme anymore. While this article deals with Mountain Lions it applies to bears and other wildlife as well.

YOU MAY BE ATTRACTING MOUNTAIN LIONS TO YOUR PROPERTY WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING IT

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado’s abundant wildlife is often cited by residents as one of the things they like best about living here. During the mid and late 20th century, Colorado’s growth brought people in closer contact with deer, elk and other wildlife species, to the delight of a new generation of wildlife watchers.

But one of these wild animals is the mountain lion, a powerful predator that while secretive by nature, has become increasingly visible in recent years.  And as some Coloradans have discovered, when mountain lions follow deer and other wildlife prey, it brings them into to people’s neighborhoods.

Although most people will never see a mountain lion in their lifetime, the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) says the number of reports of mountain lion sightings has been gradually increasing.

“Attacks on people are rare,” said Jerry Apker, a carnivore specialist with the Colorado Division of Wildlife. “But attacks on dogs and cats are becoming more common.”  DOW policy is very clear when it comes to lions that pose a threat to human safety.  They must be destroyed.

While a spate of lion sighting in some Front Range neighborhoods have generated headlines recently, DOW officials stress that these big cats can be found almost anywhere in the state where a suitable population of deer exists.

In the past year, the DOW destroyed or moved mountain lions from Durango, Canon City, Grand Junction, Colorado Springs, Boulder, suburban Denver, and various other communities throughout the state.

In one case in the spring of 2008, a mountain lion was found hiding in a barn in eastern El Paso County about 50 miles east of the foothills.  DOW officers tranquilized the cat and moved it back to the mountains.  In another 2008 incident, a man walking along a rural road near New Castle was forced to shoot a lion that threatened the man and his wife. Several weeks after the first New Castle incident, a second lion in the area was killed by DOW officers after the lion killed a horse.

In July 2008, the DOW killed two lions in Durango.  Both were young females that wouldn’t leave people’s yards in town.  Their behavior was on the aggressive side so the DOW decided that killing the lions for safety reasons was the prudent choice.  In Cortez, a lion jumped from a tree toward a young man on a riding lawnmower.  The lion missed.  The DOW used dogs to tree that cat, and it was destroyed.

“Roughly 65 percent of Colorado is classified as good mountain lion habitat,” said Apker. “The only place mountain lions cannot live for an extended period of time is where there is no prey.”

There are a variety of reasons for increased mountain lion sighting.  One is that more humans live and recreate where mountain lions and their primary prey, mule deer, exist.  Other explanations could be related to changes in lion distribution and movement patterns, increasing populations, or the simple fact that people are more apt to report sightings.

The vast majority of sightings happen very quickly and end when the lion runs away.  But wildlife managers are concerned that more and more reports are coming from populated areas where mountain lions are finding plentiful food supplies.

DON’T FEED THE DEER

According to Apker, feeding deer and other wildlife draws prey animals into residential areas – which means mountain lions are likely to follow.  “Sometimes people become a little too anxious to see wildlife and attempt to bring animals closer by putting out food,” he said.

It is illegal to feed deer in Colorado, but sometimes people do it anyway because they are unaware of the problems it causes.  “Deer are more than capable of finding plenty of natural food to eat on their own,” Apker explained.  “Feeding deer congregates them in back yards and puts everyone in the neighborhood at risk because deer are one of the main food sources for mountain lions.  Mountain lions usually avoid people, but even with human activity nearby, mountain lions are more likely to stay in an area where deer congregate.”

When a lion kills a large animal like a deer, they consume part of the meat and conceal the rest by covering it with dirt or leaves.  They return again later to eat more.  As long as the meat does not spoil, the lion will remain in the vicinity until it is consumed.  That might be up to a week during the winter.

If you find a partially eaten carcass on your property, call your local DOW office and they will safely remove the carcass.  This will prompt the lion to leave the area.  In some cases, DOW officers use “negative conditioning” techniques to haze cats away from populated areas.  One method is shooting the lion with bean bags or rubber buckshot.  It sends a strong message to reinforce the cat’s natural instinct to avoid people.

One of the tools the DOW uses to manage cougar populations is controlled hunting.  Licensed hunters legally kill about 350 mountain lions a year.  Another 40 or so are killed each year by car accidents, or by state or federal wildlife officers responding to calls of lions taking pets or killing livestock.

PROTECTING PETS

Like most predators, mountain lions are opportunistic.  In addition to deer, mountain lions also eat raccoons, fox, rabbits, and other mammals.  They do not differentiate between domestic pets and livestock that also make easy prey.

Pets that are allowed to roam free are in danger of being killed by lions, but also by coyotes or foxes.  Pet owners with outside dogs are encouraged to install tops on kennels to prevent predators from jumping in.

Although it is a common belief that cougars are only found in the back country, mountain lions have been known to visit nearly every part of Colorado from time to time, including occasional sightings on the eastern plains.

“I talk to a lot of people who ask me why the Division of Wildlife doesn’t move all of the lions away from the where people live,” said Apker.  “Lions are destroyed if wildlife managers determine the cat is a threat to public safety, but it is impractical to try to move every mountain lion because as long as there is food to eat it is only a matter of time before another mountain lion will move in to fill the vacated territory.”

Male mountain lions are territorial.  Some individuals live in small territories where prey is plentiful.  Other lions are constantly on the move in territories that cover hundreds of miles.

The fate of moved lions is poorly understood.  There is reason to believe that some mountain lions die after they are moved.  They could be killed by other lions where they are released, may return, or die trying.  Colorado researchers are currently studying lion movements to learn more about the effectiveness of relocating them.

Mountain lions hunt day or night, but are most active during hours of darkness.   Males will travel as much as 25 miles a night in search of food.

Lions are generally solitary.  Offspring can be born during any time of the year and will stay with their mother for approximately one year before heading off on their own.

TIPS FOR PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN MOUNTAIN LION COUNTRY:
DON’T FEED WILDLIFE: By feeding deer, raccoons or other wildlife in your yard, you may inadvertently attract mountain lions, which prey upon them.
LANDSCAPE FOR SAFETY: Remove dense and/or low-lying vegetation that provides good hiding places for mountain lions, especially around children’s play areas.  Make it difficult for mountain lions to approach a yard unseen.
INSTALL OUTDOOR LIGHTING: Keep the house perimeter well lit at night – especially along walkways – to keep any approaching mountain lions visible.
KEEP PETS SECURE: Roaming pets are easy prey for hungry mountain lions. Outside kennels should have a secure top.  Do not leave pet food outside; this can attract foxes, raccoons, rodents, and other mountain lion prey.
KEEP LIVESTOCK SECURE: Where practical, place livestock in enclosed sheds and barns at night, and be sure to secure all outbuildings.
KEEP CHILDREN SAFE: Keep a close watch on children whenever they play outdoors. Talk with children about mountain lions and teach them what to do if they encounter one.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ENCOUNTER A MOUNTAIN LION:
DO NOT APPROACH A LION: Most mountain lions try to avoid people.  Human encounters are generally brief.  Give them a way to escape.  Mountain lions become aggressive if they feel they are cornered.
DO NOT RUN FROM A LION: Running may stimulate a mountain lion’s instinct to chase. Instead, stand and face the animal. Make eye contact. If there are small children, pick them up if possible so they don’t panic and run. Although it may be awkward, pick them up without bending over or turning away from the mountain lion.
STAND TALL AND APPEAR LARGE: Raise your arms. Open your jacket if you are wearing one. Again, pick up small children. Throw stones, branches, or whatever you can reach without crouching or turning your back. Wave your arms slowly and speak firmly in a loud voice. The idea is to convince the mountain lion that you are not prey and that you may be a danger to it.
FIGHT BACK IF ATTACKED: Many potential victims have fought back successfully with rocks, sticks, binoculars, garden tools and their bare hands. Since a mountain lion usually tries to bite the head or neck, try to remain standing and face the attacking animal.
DO NOT HIKE ALONE: Go in groups, with adults supervising children.
KEEP CHILDREN CLOSE TO YOU: Observations of captive mountain lions reveal that they seem especially drawn to children because they are lower to the ground.  Keep children within your sight at all times.

Facist Holder secures power

February 2, 2009

Fascist Eric Holder has been appointed United States Attorney General. Only twenty-one Senators had the courage to stand for the Constitution and against the Obama henchman. Get ready for more Americans to die at the hands of government rogues after being entrapped. How long until another group of Americans are incinerated at the hands of the Department of Justice for practicing their religion? Those things happened during Holders last watch. Eric Holder condemns as torture something that every American troop that is spec ops, and many others go through as training, but he can’t condemn atrocities against Americans..?

Obama, the new “American way?”

February 2, 2009

Many times I have posted about the Obama. About this phenomenon and his ability to mesmerize audiences. About how our Constitutional Republic is turning into the pure democracy of mob rule. About how the Obama used amoral methods to get elected to an office that he does not deserve to be in simply based upon the requirements for the office laid out in the Constitution. Not to mention the foreign money. His promises to negotiate with those sworn to destroy America. Well, just take a look at his cabinet. What a bunch of misfits and outright traitors to their oaths to the Constitution. My prose though, is nothing compared to that of  Dr. Ali Sina. Read his work here.

Return of the Draft

January 31, 2009

It appears that the Department of Defense has come up with a scheme to reinstate the draft. Sure, the directive says that volunteers will be sought first, but guess what? If they can’t fill these positions with volunteers, then..? You got it! You will be assigned! That is a draft by any other words that they choose to use. Involuntary servitude. Is that the kind of change that people voted for? For some reason, I don’t think so.

edit: Good Times Politics beat me to this! H/T!

Defense Department Establishes Civilian Expeditionary Workforce

By Gerry J. Gilmore
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27, 2009 – The Defense Department is forming a civilian expeditionary workforce that will be trained and equipped to deploy overseas in support of military missions worldwide, according to department officials.

The intent of the program “is to maximize the use of the civilian workforce to allow military personnel to be fully utilized for operational requirements,” according to a Defense Department statement.

Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England signed Defense Department Directive 1404.10, which outlines and provides guidance about the program, on Jan. 23.

Certain duty positions may be designated by the various Defense Department components to participate in the program. If a position is designated, the employee will be asked to sign an agreement that they will deploy if called upon to do so. If the employee does not wish to deploy, every effort will be made to reassign the employee to a nondeploying position.

The directive emphasizes, however, that volunteers be sought first for any expeditionary requirements, before requiring anyone to serve involuntarily or on short notice. Overseas duty tours shall not exceed two years.

Employees in deployable-designated positions will be trained, equipped and prepared to serve overseas in support of humanitarian, reconstruction and, if absolutely necessary, combat-support missions.

The program also is open to former and retired civilian employees who agree to return to federal service on a time-limited status to serve overseas or to fill in for people deployed overseas.

Program participants are eligible for military medical support while serving in their overseas duty station.

All participants will undergo pre- and post-deployment medical testing, including physical and psychological exams.

Defense civilians reassigned from their normal duty to serve overseas will be granted the right to return to the positions they held prior to their deployment or to a position of similar grade, level and responsibility within the same organization, regardless of the deployment length .

Families of deployed Defense Department civilian employees shall be supported and provided with information on benefits and entitlements and issues likely to be faced by the employee during and upon return from a deployment.

Defense civilian employees who participate in the expeditionary program shall be treated with high regard as an indication of the department’s respect for those who serve expeditionary requirements.

Expeditionary program participants’ service and experience shall be valued, respected and recognized as career-enhancing.

Participants who meet program requirements would be eligible to receive the Secretary of Defense Medal for the Global War on Terrorism.

Can’t ban guns? Okay, just ban the ammunition!

January 30, 2009

My usual Friday project for this week was going to be addressing the latest control scheme by those that don’t have anything better to do than infringe upon the rights of others. However, someone beat me to it, and in a much better manner than my poor writing skills allow for.

Read it here

Be sure to also read the comments!

So, what can I add to the discussion? Not a heck of a lot, but I can drop a few ideas!

  • Small business plans are fairly simple to write. This ban could make more people more money than Nigerian Internet scams!
  • Making otherwise law abiding people into criminals will have them going into the underground economy and learning from the professionals that already operate there. Like drug dealers and manufacturers. So, from simple ammunition manufacturing ( like marijuana) one can easily get to the next (transition) step up the criminal ladder. Illegal weapons, such as crew served weapons, RPG’s and so on. (Like cocaine and heroin.)
  • The immense profits will lead to territorial conflicts. An entire new version of gang warfare and violence will lead to a new war. A war on guns/ammo that will make the war on drugs look like a 1960’s love in. Think about the product being sold. Drugs most often kill as a secondary effect, while an RPG kills through primary effect.
  • As the violence rises, so will the profits as more and more people seek the ability to properly and effectively defend themselves and families. The market then starts all over again, and the business plan adjusts to the new cycle as new recruits join the ranks of the criminal world.
  • Government will respond with increased enforcement, and more people will get killed, sometimes based upon incorrect information. Or simply because of the nature of this new class of law breaking.

The path to hell is paved with bricks made from good intentions. Making decent people that simply want to exercise their natural right to defend oneself and family into criminals is in and of itself criminal. Those that seek to pass such laws are the true criminals and should be resisted by any and all that are capable of thinking rationally and logically.

An individual right? CNN Poll

January 29, 2009

STOLEN FROM

Does the Second Amendment give individuals the right to bear arms?

If you have seen this and voted, GREAT, if you haven’t, PLEASE vote!! I was a *no-brainer* for me, and should be for any thinking person, but we ALL know that there are many brainless moonbats out there. Here’s a chance to combat those moonbats!

Please vote on this gun issue, 2nd Amendment question on USA Today. It will only take a few seconds of your time.

Then pass the link on to all the pro gun folks you know. Hopefully these results will be published later this month. This upcoming year will become critical for gun owners with the Supreme Court accepting the District of Columbia case against the right for individuals to bear arms.

First – vote on this one.

Second – launch it to other folks and have THEM vote – then we will see if the results get published.

Vote in the USA Today poll – click on the link below.

The Question is:
Does the Second Amendment give individuals the right to bear arms?

USATODAY.com – Quick Question- VOTE HERE

my response;

Here’s my take on it. The term “inalienable rights” is in the Declaration of Independence.

The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, are an expression of the Declaration. At least that is how I was taught.

Before our Founders rebelled, and the United States was formed there was what was called the “Rights of Englishmen.” Those rights had been in place since the Magna Carta had been written, and there, it is stated as a God given right, to possess arms for the common and personal defense. Those were “individual rights.” Granted, the belief was “God given” but the King didn’t see it that way. So it was written down in the common language of the times.

Our entire Bill of Rights is based upon those very same beliefs. Those are individual rights belonging to everyone, and are not granted by any king, government, or authority.

And please, don’t come back with the “limited rights” argument expressed as by shouting fire in a crowded theater is a crime. If the damned thing is in fact on fire it’s your civic duty to warn others of the danger.

Decorated Marine faces charges

January 28, 2009

A Decorated Marine needs your support more than ever.
Torrey Thompson is in danger of serving time in jail for a crime that he did not commit.  Thompson is a former police officer of DeKalb County, Georgia and a Marine Corps veteran.  This dedicated man does not deserve to be convicted all for doing his job; enforcing the law and protecting the public.

Torrey Thompson is charged with felony murder, manslaughter and aggravated assault arising out of an incident which occurred on September 12, 2006.  Thompson was called for back-up along with two other officers in an apartment complex in Decatur, Georgia.  The two officers that called for back-up were Officers Knock and Mondesir.  They were investigating a stolen vehicle in the apartment complex, which had been identified in a hit and run incident earlier that day.

When Officer Knock stopped the vehicle, the occupants jumped and fled on foot.  Knock and Mondesir contacted the owner of the vehicle who informed them that the vehicle had been stolen.  The owner identified one of the occupants to be Lorenzo Mathews.  Mathews was already wanted in connection with a shooting earlier in the month.

Knock and Mondesir were given permission to search the second floor of the apartment building where they believed Mathews to be hiding.  Thompson was then called for back-up along with Officer Nunn and Sergeant Berg. Officers Knock and Mathews positioned themselves at the rear of the apartment on the ground floor.  Officer Thompson positioned himself next to Officer Knock at the base of the stairwell.

As the Officers entered the building, Mathews was standing in the kitchen area.  Mathews fled out the back and down the stairs while Officers Thompson and Knock proceeded to yell “STOP, GET TO THE GROUND” and then ordered Mathews to “SHOW YOUR HANDS”.  Matthews refused the orders and ran down the stairs pointing what appeared to be a gun at Officer Thompson.

Mathews then pointed the item at Knock.  Officer Knock then yelled “SHOW YOUR HANDS”, “STOP”, “DROP YOUR WEAPON”, and “GIVE UP”.  Once again, Mathews ignored Knock’s commands and lunged towards him.  Officer Knock fired his 9-millimeter Beretta four times hitting Mathews once in the chest.

Officer Knock did not think that he hit Mathews because he then jumped over the railing of the staircase and ran towards Officer Thompson.  Officer Knock did not fire again because Thompson was in his line of fire.  Knock yelled to Thompson to “shoot him”.  Observing something dark in Matthews hand and believing it to be the butt of a pistol, Officer Thompson shot his 9-millimeter Beretta twice.

Mathews jumped the backyard fence and fled the scene towards a wooded area behind the apartment building.  Officer Thompson chased Mathews and yelled for Mathews to “STOP” as he chased him through a parking lot towards the wooded area.  Mathews turned and Officer Thompson fired his Beretta four times because he feared that Mathews was armed and would take an offensive position against him as he entered the woods.

As Mathews entered the woods he stopped and looked at Officer Thompson.  Officer Thompson proceeded to fire four more times.  Mathews ran through the woods and jumped over a fence into a shopping center.

When the K-9 unit arrived, they found Lorenzo Mathews located dead in the shopping center.  A large knife was found at the shopping center fence where Mathews had climbed over.

Officer Torrey Thompson is now being charged with felony murder, manslaughter, aggravated assault, and violation of oath by an officer.  These outrageous charges against Thompson are completely unjust.

Officer Thompson was performing his job the way he was trained to do.  He knew that Lorenzo Mathews was a dangerous felon who had earlier demonstrated a willingness to place others in harms way to avoid arrest.  Thompson took the necessary actions to keep this criminal off the streets of the community he was trying to protect.

Officer Thompson was indicted in July 2008, almost two years after the incident occurred.  It is not fair that this dedicated officer could spend time in jail for protecting the public.

LELDF is assisting to help Officer Torrey Thompson with his expensive legal fees and expert witness testimony, but we need your support.  But, we cannot do it alone.  Thompson needs to know that his fellow Americans support the job he does and that we appreciate his bravery.

LELDF is a non-profit organization founded to support and defend police officers from unfair charges for actions taken in the line of duty.

This Decorated Marine has four letters of commendation and has never been disciplined.  This is not a police officer who deserves to spend any time jail for a crime that he did not commit.

The two Officers, Knock and Thompson, both believed that their lives were in danger.  Mathews was a dangerous suspect who was making aggressive moves towards the officers.  They believe that they were justified in the actions they took.

Why should Torrey Thompson, a dedicated Police Officer and Decorated Marine, have to endure the consequences of these charges because of this criminal?

You can help Officer Thompson obtain justice by showing your support as a fellow American who respects the sacrifices he makes for his community.

LELDF is asking you to make a contribution of $25, $50, $100, or any other amount that you can afford.  Your tax-deductible donation will make a huge impact on Officer Torrey Thompson’s life.

We thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

David H. Martin

Has free-market capitalism died?

January 27, 2009

Always, and in  all ways  freedom and individual liberty will forever be the favorite whipping boy of those with a socialist bent. Populist’s, such as the new President are in bed with socialist on a number of issues that are directly related. Be that Gun Control, or taxation. However, the economy is currently at the forefront. Below, is an excellent expose of this better than thou attitude by those that are of the collectivist mind set.

Has free-market capitalism died?

Michael Miller

Who would have imagined 20 years ago — when the Berlin Wall fell and we celebrated the death of socialism — that capitalism would be under heavy fire? The cardinal of Westminster, Cormack Murphy O’Connor, reportedly said 2008 was the year when “capitalism died.”

What are we to make of capitalism in light of all the crises, fraud and government intervention, when even some traditional supporters of markets are supporting bailouts?

Before answering this question, it is important to note that “capitalism” is a Marxist term. It gives the impression that the market is a nebulous force. This impersonal understanding can lead us to blame markets when things go wrong instead of exploring reasons that are harder to diagnose.

Pope John Paul II rejected the term, preferring “market economy,” “business economy” or “free economy.” He did so to illustrate that markets are networks of human relationships. This sheds light on the underlying moral nature of markets.

Markets are the combined activities of millions of individuals. They are not composed merely of some guys on Wall Street; they are made up by us. Like anything else run by humans, markets can fail. If we become overly speculative and convinced that prices can go nowhere but up — as happened in the Tulip Bubble in 1637, the dot.com bubble in 2000 and the recent housing bubble — sooner or later reality will set in.

Despite their failures, however, free markets have lifted more people out of poverty and helped create prosperity and peace better than any system.

In these days of financial turmoil, we often hear critics speaking about deregulation or “unbridled capitalism.” But try to think of one country where there are no regulations. For free markets to succeed, they require a framework built on rule of law, contracts and secure property rights.

The real question is what kind of regulation and what level of intervention we should choose.

Many contributing causes of this crisis were an overly invasive government. Federal regulators required banks to provide mortgages to customers who could not pay back the loans; the Federal Reserve manipulated the money supply, exacerbating the housing boom; and politicians promised bailouts that created incentives for irresponsible behavior.

How many of us, out of greed, gluttony or pride, used credit cards to buy things we did not need or could not afford? What about Wall Street bankers who took imprudent risks with clients’ money? Markets cannot succeed without a strong moral fabric among the citizenry.

Yet we again hear calls for increased regulation and government involvement.

If we regulate too much, we concentrate the power of markets in fewer and fewer hands. This has led to all sorts of evil and corruption. Socialist economies, cartels, oligarchies and union-controlled industries produce stagnation and create incentives for corruption. It is a false hope to believe regulation will make everything right.

It is likewise delusional to believe markets alone are enough. Our Founders taught us that without virtue political liberty could not long be sustained. The same holds true for economic liberty. And yet without economic liberty there can be no political liberty. Like liberty, the market must be moral, or it cannot exist.

Senate Bill 09-057 The Public School Financial Transparency Act

January 27, 2009

Colorado politics, and politicians… One would think that there were more pressing things that need to be addressed, but? Apparently not.

Please Support Senate Bill 09-057
The Public School Financial Transparency Act
The more transparent government is, the more accountable government is.
This bill will require our public schools to show their spending online. Taxpayers could see how their money is used. Today’s technology would make this extremely affordable. When people can easily find contracting or purchasing options that better cut costs, it might pay for itself many times over.
After all, most Coloradans want to see their public education tax dollars going to the classroom. How much better if we all could see it for ourselves!
This Wednesday, January 28th, the Senate Education Committee is hearing testimony on this bill. The hearing is scheduled to take place “upon adjournment” of the morning session of the entire general assembly. This isn’t a specific time, but 10:30 is a reasonable estimate of when the committee meeting will begin. If you can be there to provide testimony in favor of this bill, Libertarian Party member Amanda Teresi (of Liberty on the Rocks and the Independence Institute) is organizing speakers.

People interested in speaking will meet in the cafeteria, which is in the basement of the capitol.  If you can’t find us, call or text me (David K. Williams, Jr.) at 303-588-2731, I’ll find you. The Education Committee is scheduled to meet in Senate Committee Room 354. The staff at the capitol is helpful, and will point you in the right direction.
There is lots of paid parking around the capitol but I would suggest giving yourself time to find parking, or take publicly funded mass transit.  Also, SB 57 is the first bill on the list to be discussed, but they can change that at any time.  There will be pre-written testimonies prepared for people who would like to testify but don’t know what to say.  If people want to come but not testify, that is good too, we just want to show how many people support the issue.
If you can make it to capitol OR NOT, please contact the members of the Senate Education Committee and let tell them to support SB-57, the Public School Financial Transparency Act.(Don’t wait, send them an email right now!)
