… To the shores of Somalia

November 18, 2008

Has the time come for a change in the Marine Corps Hymn? Piracy on the high seas has always been a problem. But, in recent history it was more like a gnat on a cows butt. Just not that big of a problem.

Enter those capitalistic souls in the beleaguered nation state called Somalia. Reputedly having ties to various terrorist organizations, as well as those that are just looking to make a few dollars the Somali pirates are morphing into international prominence.

Has the time come to send in the Marines? With some pretty lax, by normal standards, rules of engagement? Heck, Barack Obama could establish a legacy right off the bat that would put him squarely in the same sort of caliber as Thomas Jefferson. Not to mention save the economy of several nations. I certainly do not see George Bush as having the stones, to use a Brit phrase, to get this much needed task accomplished.

In the mean time piracy on the high seas has become a lucrative profession. Read about this up and coming lucrative profession here.

Brrr… brrr… it is so darn’d warm!

November 17, 2008

The faux scientist’s took another hit it seems. First the originator of the computer model that pronounced climate change as man made said the model was faulty, and gave faulty results. Then the actual statistics showed that no warming had happened. Then, poor Al Gore had to go into hiding because it was shown that his big pitch was more about lining his own, and his cronies pockets than science. Now this..? What is an eco chicken little freak to do?

The world has never seen such freezing heat

A surreal scientific blunder last week raised a huge question mark about the temperature records that underpin the worldwide alarm over global warming. On Monday, Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), which is run by Al Gore’s chief scientific ally, Dr James Hansen, and is one of four bodies responsible for monitoring global temperatures, announced that last month was the hottest October on record.

When has the earth not been either cooling or warming?

Israel, a thorn in our foot? Or in our very soul?

November 16, 2008

Israel is always on my mind. For one, or another reason. I myself love Israel having been there on several occasions. I love the courage of the people there. The sheer tenacity for life that the people possess after centuries of being flattened by so many other peoples from all over the world.

When things get really, really bad Israeli’s have much in common with Americans. After all, who the hell else gets so much flak just for being who, and what they are, than Israeli’s, or was that Americans..? Hell, I get so confused about those things.. After all, most Israeli’s are from the former Soviet Union, or Nazi Germany. Sort of like the Irish and Scot Irish in America. They are strangers in a desperate land. Hence, I think, that there is a kinship between the two nations.

I have met many Arabs as well as other Muslims while traveling in the mid east. I have met Jews in most parts of the world. Introduced individualy there have been many fine and just people from both groups. Then, there are those that are so stuck on the Ugly American theme that they cannot get their collective heads extricated from their asse’s. From both groups.

Who the hell has come to the aide of either group when the feces hits the rotating occilator device?

The United States of America. That is who. Call us what you want. Deride us at every opportunity. I simply do not care. I am an AMERICAN!

Read this, and just perhaps you will begin to get a glimmer about what I speak of…

I don’t carry a gun…

November 16, 2008

Some things never seem to change. Yet, others seem to go through metamorphism, grow, and just get better with age. Fine wine and Irish whiskey come to mind as well as tough old Boone and Crockett Bull Elk. Syd, over at Front sight Press takes this to new heights.

Hat tip to TexasFred for catching this!

Last year about this time, I wrote a piece called “I don’t carry a gun…” and it goes like this:

I don’t carry a gun…

November 13th, 2007 by Syd

… to kill people. I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don’t carry a gun to scare people. I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m paranoid. I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m evil. I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don’t carry a gun because I hate the government. I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m angry. I carry a gun so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don’t carry a gun because my sex organs are too small. I carry a gun because I want to continue to use those sex organs for the purpose for which they were intended for a good long time to come.

I don’t carry a gun because I want to shoot someone. I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don’t carry a gun because I’m a cowboy. I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

I don’t carry a gun to make me feel like a man. I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don’t carry a gun because I feel inadequate. I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

I don’t carry a gun because I love it. I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

The piece struck a nerve with a lot of people and it proved to be very popular. It was copied to blogs, websites and forums hundreds of times and it remains the most linked to and copied piece of writing on the blog. The reception of this piece has been deeply gratifying. I never objected to any copying or re-posting of the piece anywhere. I was glad to make the contribution to the cause.

Recently, people have begun to do something with it that is driving me nuts: they are changing a couple of words and presenting it without attribution, as if it were their own work. Believe it or not, I have actually received three different versions of it in e-mail this week, each one slightly modified but carrying the core of the original piece. I should be flattered, I guess, but I’m not.

What’s the problem with this? First of all, it is copyrighted material that I own. I could sue over this if I were the litigious kind. More importantly, this is a signature piece of creative work that I did, and it’s not right for people to change a few words and present it as their own or as an anonymous internet piece. It would be like taking Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven,” changing the name to “The Big Black Bird,” and circulating it as your own. Put yourself in the author’s place and I think you will see the problem.

These things take on a life of their own, and I know that there is no real way to put a stop to it. In many ways I am delighted that I created a “viral” idea. I would ask from those of you who are readers and friends of mine that when you receive one of these or see one posted on a forum, that you refer the sender back to this page so that they can see the way the piece was originally written, who wrote it, and how it should rightfully remain.

Thanks.

Hannity and Limbaugh to be kicked off the air

November 15, 2008

Wild eyed speculation? Or prescience? Granted, I have to wonder sometimes about things that respected members of the media say, especially when they go off the deep end. Yet, this may be more prophetic than any of us truly want to believe.

Do you believe that liberals already dominate the media?

Do you think biased coverage played a large part in the outcome of the presidential election?

If you think things were bad in that regard…

IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE ALLOW LIBERALS TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THEIR PLANS TO IMPOSE THE SO-CALLED FAIRNESS DOCTRINE AND SUCCEED IN SILENCING CONSERVATIVE TALK-RADIO HOSTS LIKE RUSH LIMBAUGH AND SEAN HANNITY AND LAURA INGRAHAM!

Do liberals actually believe that conservative opinions are pornography?

Are liberals so threatened that they’re plotting and planning right now, at this very minute, to silence conservative thoughts and opinions from the public airwaves?

You be the judge.

FOX News asked Senator Chuck Schumer if liberals in Congress will try to implement the so-called Fairness Doctrine – a measure specifically designed to shut down Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and conservative talk radio.

Schumer replied indignantly:

“Do you think we should allow people to put pornography on the air? Absolutely not. Particularly on television or radio.”

Huh? No, it’s NOT a joke! And he didn’t stop there.

Schumer nastily admonished decent Americans for some imagined hypocrisy:

“The very same people who don’t want the Fairness Doctrine want the FCC [Federal Communications Commission] to limit pornography on the air…. That’s not consistent.”

It’s almost beyond belief.

We couldn’t have made it up!

Is Schumer so unhinged that he’s not even capable of understanding the fundamental difference between smut and political expression?

Craig Parshall, general counsel for the National Religious Broadcasters said:

“I was stunned by Senator Schumer’s suggestion that by keeping filth off the air, the federal government has somehow become empowered to take over the control of legitimate programming content of broadcasters.”

But Parshall missed one very important point.

With control of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives, Schumer and his liberal colleagues are twisting the First Amendment’s guarantees of Freedom of Speech and of the Press – ALL TO SET THE STAGE TO SILENCE RUSH, HANNITY AND OTHERS.

If you’re a liberal, you can burn the flag, put four-letter-word bumper stickers on your car, commit lewd acts on-stage, play profane rap music loudly on your car radio, produce, rent and distribute the most disgusting filth in broad daylight and on the Internet in plain view of minors and even use taxpayer dollars to depict Jesus suspended in bodily waste.

But when it comes to shutting down conservative thoughts and opinions, now that they have grabbed the reins of power, liberals are making control over the content of speech a top priority!

They’re plotting and maneuvering behind the scenes to make it happen RIGHT NOW!

Peter Kirsanow writing in National Review Online tells us why this fight is URGENT:

“Imposition of some form of the Fairness Doctrine likely will be one of the Democrats’ agenda items for the first 100 days of the new administration. It’s important that conservatives begin working now to stop it.”

Kirsanow went on:

“Waiting until Inauguration Day to get geared up is too late. By that time the Fairness Doctrine Express will be at full steam- wavering Democrats will be pressed to support the new Democratic president, weak-kneed Republicans will want to display comity, the mainstream media will not be saddened to see talk radio annihilated and much of the public will be too enraptured by Obama’s Camelot inauguration to notice or care.”

Kirsanow is right.

There is not a moment to lose. If we take a stand now, we can defeat this threat to our civil liberties.

If we wait, it will be too late.
Use the hyperlink below and bombard President George W. Bush and the Republican Members of the Senate with your Blast Faxes. Demand that they stand firm against any attempt by liberals in Congress to effectively outlaw the First Amendment.

We must act now! Liberals in Congress may try to sneak the Fairness Doctrine into legislation any day now. Liberal pundits inside the Beltway and members of the elite media are already attempting to sell conservative Senators on the notion that their only chance for political survival is to display comity. Unless they hear from you now, they WILL believe it, as they have in the past.

We can win this fight. It only takes 40 Senators to stand firm . But if patriotic Americans do not speak up, we will lose this fight for our liberties.

All is not well in Mudville it seems…

November 15, 2008

Barack Obama won a landslide victory in the election. It appears though that he has a lot to overcome. Including some very angry Americans. It is no secret that I am no Obama fan. It’s also no secret that I could care less about his race. I mean, he’s a quarter black, quarter Arab, and half white. He was raised by whites. So what’s the big deal about race? Others that are looking at the anti Obama people have decided. That whether it is, or not about race that they will play the race card for all they can.Nothing new there as far as I can see. Race baiting has been going on for so long in academia that it was used as a model for misandry justification.

My point is that his proposed policies will destroy this nation. Not change it for some sort of “better” country. It will tear this country apart at the seems, and don’t be surprised if some sort of revolution takes place. There are more than a few people that are not just upset that he (Obama) won, they are full blown pissed.

What brought this posting on?

Second Hand Smoke

November 14, 2008

The nico Nazi’s are at it again I see.

Physician, Freedom Lover, says Second-Hand Smoke Science is Junk

I can say with confidence that second hand smoke may irritate some, but it does not kill. Those claiming thousands of deaths from second hand smoke to the Dallas City Council and the public are deceitful for a political goal.

I have been a Texan for 22 years, and a physician specializing in emergency medicine for 36 years. I am familiar with the public health science on second hand smoke.

Public health studies cited by the American Cancer Society and the Surgeon General claim thousands of deaths result from second-hand smoke. These are weak, cherry-picked studies. Their supporters compound the deceit by ignoring studies by the World Health Organization (Buffetta 1998 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute), Stranges, 2006 in Archives of Internal Medicine, and Enstrom 2003 in The British Medical Journalall of which show no effect from second-hand smoke.

In science, one study that disproves a scientific theory is more important than a pile of studies that are slightly positive. Anti-smoking advocates and fanatics ignore that basic rule and ignore any study they don’t like.

They are propagandists, not scientists.

The crusaders are willing to do and say anything about second hand smoke, including making public statements about thousands of deaths from second hand smoke. Those claims are diverse and duplicitous—they are lies. Second hand smoking, even for the spouse of a smoker is one cigarette or less per day—which has no effect. The second hand smoke scare is a phantom menace conjured up by the High Holy Church of Smoke Haters to support the anti-smoking crusade.

Smoking Bans violate the Texas tradition of minding your own business. If the City Council thinks it has a role in telling people how to live, they should get a Divinity Degree and find a congregation.  Folks in Dallas can easily avoid second hand smoke, and employment in a bar or restaurant is voluntary. Smoking is legal. Avoiding smoke is easy.

Gold Rush! Cash in while you can!

November 14, 2008

The continuing debate over the current financial crisis aside the dash for the latest government gold rush appears to be in full swing. Government policy started the crisis, not the so-called free market. Now, the government seeks to make matters worse while appearing to make life better. At least for those that have the ability to contribute the millions that it takes to stay in elected office.

When governments attempt to “fix” economies by meddling with the free markets that power them, these would-be market-driven economies become political footballs. Economic decisions that would have been fairly and justly arbitrated by unbiased, natural laws of economics become decided on purely political grounds. Markets lose stability in direct proportion to the extent of such meddling. This is certainly the case with the government “fix” known as TARP, or Troubled Asset Relief Program. The bailout package was originally crafted to relieve banks so that they would remain solvent, preventing further meltdown of the U.S. economy. But with $700 billion up for grabs, TARP’s original purpose was thrown under the bus in the gold rush that ensued. Now everyone wants in on the government’s largess, and markets have reacted accordingly. And why not? Why shouldn’t we all line up to “get ours” if the government is giving away “free” money? Sadly, this seems to be the new American corporate mindset.

Insurance giant AIG, for instance, is now slated to receive more than $150 billion in the largest single bailout allotment from TARP thus far. The government effectively nationalized AIG in the process, establishing a $40 billion stake in the world’s largest insurer. Eager to get in on the TARP lottery, American Express — that’s right, the credit card company — is apparently also now a “bank,” having been so blessed by the Federal Reserve. Evidently unaware of AMEX’s subtle approach, one draping the hat-in-hand recipient in “bank-like” trappings, U.S. automakers are pursuing more blunt-instrument strategies. Their game plan? Simply demand funds from Washington on the basis that, well, they need the cash, and everyone else seems to be getting an awful lot of it lately. Perfect.

The government has committed $290 billion so far without any oversight because Congress has yet to fill the positions it created. Somewhere in all of this thrash for cash is a lesson about the proper role of government in a free market economy. We just hope that this lesson hits home before The Great Depression, Part II does.

Eco-Fascist’s lose

November 14, 2008

The Black Crows got another one correct this past week when the Navy won a case that directly involved American national security. Largely based upon speculation whale activist’s had sued to stop the Navy from doing their job. That being the defense of the United States.

The United States Navy scored a victory this week in the U.S. Supreme Court in a battle against environmentalists and their accomplices in the Ninth Circuit Court. The question was whether the Navy could test sonar systems off the California coast in spite of alleged harm to whales and dolphins. The sonar is essential in detecting new “quiet” submarines deployed by China and North Korea. A district court in California had ruled that the Navy must cease such exercises in order to save the whales, and the Ninth Circuit Court agreed. The Bush administration had countered by exempting the Navy from the federal laws cited in the case, saying that national security trumped the whales. This week, the Supreme Court agreed. “We do not discount the importance of plaintiffs’ ecological, scientific and recreational interests in marine mammals. Those interests, however, are plainly outweighed by the Navy’s need to conduct realistic training exercises,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion. “We see no basis for jeopardizing national security.”

Unfortunately, the decision could be rendered moot by the incoming Obama administration, which would likely stop the exercises.

There has to be a reason that Greenpeace stays the hell out of the way of the U.S. Navy…

Profiles of valor: U.S. Army 1st Lt. Ashley Henderson Huff

November 14, 2008

In October, the Interior Ministry of the Kurdistan Regional Government honored a fallen American soldier with a statue at the opening of a police college in Erbil. U.S. Army 1st Lt. Ashley Henderson Huff of the 385th MP Battalion, based out of Fort Stewart, Georgia, was honored for her work toward establishing the new academy, which will accommodate up to 650 people. Huff had worked on behalf of Coalition Forces with the Interior Ministry to build the police academy, but she was killed by a suicide car bomber in Mosul in 2006. Interior Minister Sinjari said, “First Lieutenant Ashley Henderson Huff was a woman of courage and determination. We are honored to have worked with her. Her family and colleagues should be proud of what she did for her country and for the people of Iraq in the liberation of our country. Her statue will act not only as a remembrance of her but will also inspire our police cadets to live up to her standards of commitment and professionalism.”
