a “pro-gun” patsy

May 28, 2014

You may have seen NAGR’s e-mail a few weeks ago where we publicly exposed Alan Gottlieb’s compromises of your Second Amendment rights.

And we called it what it is: endorsing gun control, and leading the fight for national gun registration.

This isn’t anything new.  Alan Gottlieb did the exact same thing last year during the post-Newtown, Connecticut tragedy battle in the U.S. Senate.

It amazed everyone at the time, but Alan Gottlieb proclaimed he helped write the Toomey-Manchin Universal Background Check bill.

You remember that legislation — it forced every firearm sale in America to go through the Brady system, which is, plain and simple, national gun registration.

What else do you call going through a government-mandated system to beg permission to practice what is supposed to be a right — with the records being kept by varying levels of government agents for later retrieval?

That’s gun registration.  And since it’s a federal bill in Congress, forcing all states to do it, it’s national.

National + Gun Registration = National Gun Registration.

But don’t take my word for it; take Alan Gottlieb’s word.

Here’s what was written in the Second Amendment Foundation’s (SAF) “The Gottlieb Tartaro Report” Issue 137, May, 2006:

Rabidly anti-gun Sen. FRANK LAUTENBERG (D-NJ) has introduced S. 843, “to establish background check procedures for gun shows,” which in fact is a massive gun registration program of incredibly dangerous scope. (highlight added)

Here, we agree with Alan Gottlieb; forcing all sales at gun shows to go through a Brady check is “a massive gun registration program.”  And yes, it’s incredibly dangerous.

Or look at the SAF report from Dec. 6, 2001, when Gottlieb wrote:

The fact is, Charles Schumer always envisioned the Brady Law as a gun registration scheme, and he has seized on this opportunity to lament that the NICS records are strictly off-limits for that kind of political skullduggery.

Well said.  It’s a registration scheme — and now Gottlieb himself is leading the charge to pass it.

The good news is that we killed Toomey-Manchin . . . for now.

But it was darn close.  Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, Dianne Feinstein, and Barack Obama nearly got their way and forced Brady Registration on every American.

To pass this gun control, they needed a “pro-gun” patsy to give them cover.

Enter Alan Gottlieb.

Had it passed — when Alan Gottlieb claimed he helped write it — we could have called that the “Gottlieb law,” forcing every private sale in America to go through Brady prior to transfer . . . and thus register their guns.

And rather than celebrate the victory over Toomey-Manchin, and build a bulwark against any further attempts, Alan Gottlieb’s response is that it’s inevitable, and we should support it.

Had he asked me, I would tell Alan Gottlieb to publicly apologize for playing such a prominent role in passing gun control, and be elated that it didn’t pass.

Now that he’s being called out for his compromises, Alan Gottlieb is using silly and childish antics, and even threatening to sue.

That might have worked with others in the past, but the truth is always a defense.

And all you have to do is watch either video to see that Alan Gottlieb isn’t fighting against universal background checks.

Given his fervor to pass national gun registration, we have to ask some questions:

What other gun controls does Alan Gottlieb think Americans should pass, since they are inevitable?

No, we won’t agree to his compromises.

And we won’t remain silent about them, either.

For Freedom,

P.S. The President of the Second Amendment Foundation Alan Gottlieb is banging the drums for a new expanded federal gun registration bill.  Alan Gottlieb says gun owners should “compromise” with the gun-grabbers.

We say “NO!” and stand ready to fight back against gun control at every opportunity.

NAGR: What the NRA should be! No compromise with your rights, ever!

November 12, 2013

While there are many Second Amendment support groups the most well known, and reviled by those that suffer from the mental illness hoplophobia really does very little for the day to day supporter of the Bill of Rights. That being the National Rifle Association. Please don’t get me wrong about the NRA. They are possibly the very first safety organization of any type in history, and it is doubtless that the firearm safety programs started by them have saved countless lives, as well as reduced severe injuries all around the world, and have served the vital function of providing a working template for virtually all safety programs.

Feared by many politicians, the NRA has clout. However, when it comes to politics? The NRA is a true failure. They refuse to fight the tough fights. Only getting into those in which the probability of success is high. Indeed, the refusal to actually get involved in the dirty work led to the formation of Gun Owners of America as well as others. Wyoming Gun Owners, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners and others like them get into the trenches and fight. Also, The National Association for Gun Rights has been getting results that have been quite impressive as of late. Please watch the video for more about NAGR, and donate what you can to each of the groups mentioned above.

Colorado now seeks to torpedo free speech: First it was the ability to defend yourself. Well, we did warn you.

May 2, 2013

We had to know this was coming sooner or later. A government that believes itself to be powerful enough to restrict the right of citizens to self-defense with firearms will sooner or later seek to torpedo free speech as well.

Invariably collectivist governments around the world prove the point. From the old Communist Soviet Union to Red China, from Hitler’s Germany to Castro’s Cuba, such regimes are convinced it is necessary not only to insure that their citizens are disarmed but that their right to criticize the government or to utter other forbidden ideas must be severely restricted.

The name of the game is centralized control. Government fears the freedom of the people. Thus, the people must be muzzled and deprived of their guns.

Colorado is the latest case in point.

Just weeks ago the Colorado legislature and governor, both of which are under the control of Democrats, passed highly restrictive gun control measures over the objections of millions of citizens, leading a major gun magazine manufacturer to promptly leave the state, taking its jobs with it. Sportsmen and hunters have vowed to boycott the state. Hunting and fishing are a multimillion dollar industry in Colorado, and the state government benefits handsomely from the activity.

But perhaps the thing that sticks in the craw of Colorado politicians the most is the vociferous verbal attacks they are receiving from citizens who astutely observe that the state has crossed a line that is totally unacceptable to freedom-loving citizens. Threats of recall elections have been rampant, and forces are now amassing to oust all Democrats from the legislature in the next election for their shocking overreach in trampling on the rights of citizens.

However, it is to be noted that the main instigator of the current attack on free speech is a Republican.

In addition, Colorado has become a target for nationwide civil disobedience as gun owners vow they will deliberately break the state’s new gun laws.

But instead of such outrage leading the politicians to back off their ill-conceived attacks on citizen rights, the pompous purveyors of prepotent despotism decided instead to muzzle the citizens, preventing them from advocating for Second Amendment rights.

One writer called the action “an unprecedented abuse of power.”

When the gun control bills were being considered in the Colorado legislature, Rep. Cheri Gerou, a Republican, burst forth in a tirade over her constituents’ views on guns. One of her targets was a representative of the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners Association, Joe Neville, who eloquently defended the legislator’s gun rights constituents. In retaliation Gerou filed a complaint against Neville and launched an investigation by an “anti-gun tribunal” into the gun owner group and Neville.

The full story of the confrontation instigated by Gerou can be found here.

This kind of behavior on the part of elected representatives who are supposed to represent all of their constituents cannot be tolerated. If her actions are sanctioned or overlooked, and if she is successful in silencing Neville and the gun owners group, then the forces of anti-freedom will win yet another battle.

Patriots beware.

Most elected officials would love nothing more…

October 12, 2012
Most elected officials would love nothing more than to take gun owners’ votes and then never hear from them again until the next election rolls around.

They think they’re MORE than capable of running our lives for us, after all. Voters like you and me just “get in the way.”

Well, I’m a State Representative who believes the opposite . . .

. . . which is why I’ve joined with Rocky Mountain Gun Owners to sponsor the Colorado Constitutional Carry Act in the upcoming Legislative Session.

I believe it’s time for you and me to send a loud and clear message to the General Assembly that the days of demanding gun owners’ votes and then doing nothing in return are OVER.

So won’t you please click here and sign the petition to your State Representative and State Senator urging them to vote and pass the Colorado Constitutional Carry Bill?

As you know, if passed, Constitutional Carry would restore the right of every law-abiding Colorado citizen to carry a gun to protect themselves and their families — WITHOUT going through a bunch of bureaucratic rigmarole!

In short, if you’re legally able to own a firearm, you’re legally able to carry it concealed for self-defense. Period.

This is the way it’s done in Alaska, Arizona, Vermont and Wyoming.

And despite the hand-wringing of the gun-grabbers, the news media and government bureaucrats, those states have not seen a rise in shoot-outs and vigilante justice since passing Constitutional Carry.

I know you’re not surprised.

When law-abiding citizens are able to protect themselves, criminals soon realize they had better start looking for another line of work.

After all, attacking a “victim” armed with a concealed firearm can often result in early “retirement!”

The fact is, the gun-grabbers’ overbearing and UNCONSTITUTIONAL “regulations” and “requirements” are meant to do nothing more than undermine the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens just like you and me.

After all, do CRIMINALS ask for government permission before they carry a concealed weapon?

Do CRIMINALS have to pay fees or take training classes?

Of course not.

But under current law in Colorado:*** Government officials can still deny you a concealed-carry permit;

All they have to do is claim they’re worried you MIGHT commit a crime in the future -– a power which will almost certainly be abused in certain areas.

*** Military veterans can be STRIPPED of the right to carry a concealed weapon;

Simply acknowledging mental stress to an anti-gun government psychologist upon returning from war could trigger the ban.

*** Colorado gun owners must pay a fee every five years, or have their “training renewed,” just to keep their permits;

Some estimates show these regulations cost law-abiding Colorado gun owners up to $3 million every year, which is why some “pro-gun” organizations (of whom many are firearms instructors) supported this provision in the past.

That’s why it’s vital you act today!

The good news is, Colorado Second Amendment supporters just like you have already proven we can create a grassroots firestorm.

Our job is to force the Legislature to pass Constitutional Carry when they come back to Denver.

No other group is fighting for the right to keep and bear arms in Colorado but Rocky Mountain Gun Owners . . .

. . . which is why I’m a member of RMGO myself.

But this fight won’t be easy.

Gun control groups are likely going to be pouring millions into Colorado to brow-beat weak-kneed politicians into DEFEATING Constitutional Carry.

You and I can’t let that happen.

That’s why clicking here and signing the petition is so important.

Over the next few months, my goal is to gather up to 100,000 petitions from Second Amendment supporters just like you so that we can FLOOD the Legislature with these petitions and show every elected official in Denver you and I mean business.

Then, using mail, email and phone banks, I plan to recruit an additional 50,000 Second Amendment supporters all across Colorado to help join in this fight.

And when the fight really begins to heat up, my hope is to run targeted newspaper and radio ads to help us get the votes to put us over the top.

Unfortunately, I’m afraid even all this won’t be enough.

If you and I want to DEFEAT the gun-grabbers’ anti-gun lobby, we must be prepared to push on every front.

None of these tactics will be cheap. So I must ask for your generous financial support, as well.

Mandatory begging for bucks link.

Thanks to politicians who claim to be pro-gun…

June 9, 2012

Constitutional Carry has won broad support from freedom-loving gun owners nationwide.

No citizen should have to beg the government for a permit before he or she can exercise their Constitutional right to bear arms.

Simply put, Constitutional Carry is true Right to Carry legislation. It’s the law in Vermont, Alaska, Arizona and Wyoming.

In 2011, the National Association for Gun Rights played a key role in passing Constitutional Carry in Wyoming. Citizens there may now exercise their God-given right to self-defense without restriction.

Constitutional Carry also passed both the State House and Senate in Montana with NAGR’s backing during the 2011 session, only to be vetoed by Montana’s NRA “A”-rated Governor Brian Schweitzer.

Unfortunately, this pattern of opposition from the institutional gun lobby and the politicians they support was replayed in multiple states throughout the 2012 Legislative season.

The National Association for Gun Rights with allied state-level gun rights groups and pro-gun forces nationwide introduced Constitutional Carry bills in 22 states this year.

Predictably, the left-leaning media and the anti-gun crowd immediately began predicting blood in the streets.

In reality, crime rates have only gone down in Constitutional Carry states.

Vermont is virtually surrounded by higher-crime states like New York and Massachusetts, yet Vermont’s crime rate has remained among the lowest in the nation for decades. Violent crime has also gone down in Alaska and Arizona since Constitutional Carry became law.

In the face of these facts, it is strange to see anti-gun politicians oppose Constitutional Carry with conjured images of Wild West shootouts.

But stranger still is the fact that NRA “A”-rated politicians in numerous states and even an NRA Board Member have joined the anti-gun crowd in opposing the Right to Carry.

In Iowa, NAGR’s boots-on-the-ground ally Iowa Gun Owners (IGO) introduced the bill in 2011 and came within 2 votes of passing it.

This year, NAGR and IGO led a strong fight, but the bill was killed thanks largely to the outrageous efforts of NRA Board Member and Iowa State Representative Clel Baudler.

NAGR ally South Dakota Gun Owners also provided vigorous grassroots support for their Constitutional Carry bill in South Dakota. Sponsored by pro-gun champion Rep. Don Kopp, the bill was stonewalled by the Legislative Leadership in the State House.

Rather than support the Right to Carry, South Dakota Speaker of the House Val Rausch and Speaker Pro Tem Brian Gosch cooked up a substitute bill.

Hailed as “Constitutional Carry” by numerous NRA “A”-rated and endorsed politicians, this bill would have encouraged police to harass and detain law-abiding gun owners for nothing more than possessing a legal handgun!

With NAGR’s assistance, Iowa Gun Owners and South Dakota Gun Owners are now working to hold accountable the anti-gun state legislators who opposed Constitutional Carry.

In Georgia, NAGR and Georgia Gun Owners introduced Constitutional Carry and immediately found strong support from gun owners.

But once again, NRA “A”-rated State Representative Ann Purcell blocked the bill. As chairwoman of the Public Safety Committee, Rep. Purcell refused even to allow a vote.

Thanks in part to the outcry raised by Georgia Gun Owners against her anti-gun obstructionism, Rep. Purcell has chosen not to seek reelection this year.

There are similar stories from all across the country.

NAGR has also focused resources on Tennesee, South Carolina, Colorado, New Hampshire, and Oklahoma, and is monitoring the battles in Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Rhode Island and Maine.

Thanks to politicians who claim to be pro-gun and to the political cover provided to them by the leaders of the institutional gun lobby, the battle for Constitutional Carry is over for this year in most of these states.

But no one expects to pass Constitutional Carry without a fight.

The National Association for Gun Rights is standing firm for true Right-to-Carry legislation.

By providing resources, support and direct assistance to dozens of pro-gun state-level allies, NAGR is working to hold accountable the politicians who opposed Constitutional Carry, regardless of the ratings they have received from the institutional gun lobby.

And Constitutional Carry will be back in the very next Legislative season.

For Freedom,

Dudley Brown
Executive Vice President

P.S. The National Association for Gun Rights is supported only through the generous contributions of members and supporters like you.

Please consider chipping in $10 or $20 to help NAGR take the fight to the gun-grabbers nationwide.

Should H.R. 308 reach the Senate…

April 19, 2012

If passed, H.R. 308 would outlaw the sale or transfer of firearm magazines with a capacity of more than ten rounds.

In fact, Congresswoman McCarthy’s bill would turn widows into instant FELONS if their late husbands possessed a 12-round magazine!

Without the petitions from pro-gun Americans like you, it is impossible for the National Association for Gun Rights to keep the pressure on fence-sitting members of Congress in order to defeat gun control.

So please, click here to sign your petition right away.

BUT… even with your petition, defeating this bill won’t be easy — it will take more than just National Association for Gun Rights members alone.

I need to reach out to millions of pro-gun Americans all over the country.

And that isn’t cheap.

So in addition to your signed petition, will you make a generous contribution of $75, $50 or $%%CF_HPC1% to reach more people?

If you didn’t read my letter from earlier this week, I’ve attached it below for your convenience!  It explains just how important it is we DEFEAT H.R. 308 immediately.

When it comes to RAMMING new gun control schemes into law, President Obama believes he has some unfinished business to attend to.

But instead of standing up and FIGHTING BACK, I’m afraid some House Republicans could prove all too willing to “cut a deal.”

That’s why it’s vital you sign the petition below IMMEDIATELY.

As you’ll see, this petition DEMANDS your Congressman and Senators vote NO on the gun-grabbers’ Magazine Gun Ban Bill (H.R. 308) — or any similar bill.

If passed, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy’s (D-NY) Magazine Ban Bill would OUTLAW the sale or transfer of firearm magazines with a capacity of more than ten rounds.

Already own a handgun, rifle or shotgun with a magazine that holds more than ten rounds?

You’re “legal” for now. But you can’t ever sell it, give it away or pass it down to your kids.

In fact, Congresswoman McCarthy’s bill would turn widows into instant FELONS if their late husbands possessed a 12-round magazine!
Worse, some Capitol Hill insiders are telling me — should H.R. 308 reach the Senate — gun-grabbers are preparing to load the Magazine Ban Bill down with dozens of amendments, including the following:

*** Mandatory waiting periods and expensive, drawn-out “psychological screenings” designed to force ALL law-abiding citizens to get government approval before purchasing a firearm;

*** A TOTAL ban on all private sales under the guise of “closing the gun-show loophole”;

*** A new so-called “Assault Weapons” Ban, targeting ALL semi-automatic rifles and shotguns.

That’s why I’m counting on your IMMEDIATE action.

You see, President Obama knows this fall’s Presidential campaign is going to be a knock-down, drag-out FIGHT.

But he also knows many grassroots Republicans aren’t exactly “enthusiastic” about their candidates.

So even with his approval ratings hovering around all-time lows, President Obama has a strong chance of winning another term — IF he can turn out his left-wing base this November.

That’s why, with gun control activists like Sarah Brady and Michael Bloomberg DEMANDING action, you can virtually guarantee President Obama is going to do everything in his power to RAM H.R. 308 into law.

And sadly, I’m afraid some House Republicans will fall in line . . .

Remember, after the Arizona tragedy how several high-profile Republicans like U.S. Senator Dick Lugar (IN), Dick Cheney and Homeland Security Chairman Peter King (NY) all began pushing for new gun control schemes?

If President Obama has the audacity to trot out a still-recovering Gabrielle Giffords before his pals in the anti-gun national media, do you really believe you can count on weak-kneed House Republicans to oppose H.R. 308?

Sure, some will. Perhaps even most House Republicans will vote to DEFEAT H.R. 308.

But President Obama knows he won’t need every Republican vote. He just needs a handful to pass the McCarthy Magazine Ban.

Not only that, but with more and more news reports saying anti-gun Democrats could gain control of the U.S. House this November, many House Republicans are going to be afraid of losing their seats.

Under the white-hot spotlight of anti-gun media scrutiny, more than a few could end up thinking their very political survival depends on selling out and voting to pass H.R. 308!

The bad news is, support for H.R. 308 is gaining steam. In the House, it already has 111 House cosponsors!

Should this bill reach the Senate, all bets will be off.

That’s why your signed petition is so critical.

You see, the only way you and I can WIN this fight is to PROVE to Congress that passing H.R. 308 WILL mean political pain at the polls this November.

In short, we’ll send the message to Congress that they can either vote to DEFEAT H.R. 308 — or they can begin looking for another job.

Since President Obama was first sworn in, you and I have defied the odds and have beaten back the very worst of the gun-grabbers’ schemes.

But McCarthy’s Magazine Ban could be our toughest test yet.

So please sign your petition along with your most generous contribution of $75, $50 or $25 IMMEDIATELY.

For liberty,

Dudley Brown
Executive Vice President

P.S. With Republicans less than enthusiastic about their presidential candidates, President Obama believes he can win reelection if he’s able to mobilize his left-wing base.

That’s made H.R. 308, Carolyn McCarthy’s Magazine Ban Bill, a TOP priority for President Obama. He MUST rally his anti-gun supporters.

If passed, this legislation would OUTLAW the sale or transfer of firearm magazines with a capacity of more than ten rounds, turning widows into instant FELONS if their late husbands possessed a 12-round magazine!

That’s why it’s vital you help STOP this dangerous scheme.

“Vast left-wing conspiracy”

April 14, 2012

Interesting piece from an email.

Remember back in the 1990s when Hillary accused conservatives of being a part of a “vast right-wing conspiracy”?

Well, her left-wing co-conspirators are back at again, this time, placing blame directly on you and me — gun rights activists.

As you have probably heard in recent days, “Stand Your Ground Laws” have been under attack across the nation.

Left-wing anti-gunners are on the prowl day and night seeking to slash and burn pro-gun laws in dozens of states.

For example, gun-grabbers have put so much pressure on Republican Governor Rick Scott of Florida that he wilted to the heat and established a commission that will surely recommend shredding “Stand Your Ground” in Florida.

So much for Rick Scott’s so-called “pro-gun” credentials.

But this “pressure” isn’t just coming from the usual suspects — billionaires Michael Bloomberg and George Soros, and Hillary Clinton — it’s coming from all directions, including from Big Labor bosses.

Put simply, Big Labor’s forced-union dues are a major driving force in this assault on our gun rights.

In a recent interview, AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Arlene Holt Baker placed the “blame” for pro-gun laws on (you guessed it) . . .

. . . “conservative, right-wing policies.

Of course, this shouldn’t be much of a surprise, considering the AFL-CIO is in the tank for anti-gun President Barack Obama and every other gun-grabber running for office.

The AFL-CIO’s Baker went on to say that “stand your ground legislation passed in Florida and . . . in a number of other states” was the work of a coalition of pro-gun legislators and groups from around the country.

If you want to watch the entire sickening video, please click on the image below. To save you some time, the highlights are at these marks: 0:20, 1:32, 1:50, 2:15 and 3:25.

You know as well as I do that YOU are responsible for passage of pro-gun legislation — calls, emails, faxes, petitions and post cards.

But these words should certainly be a wake-up call to ALL gun rights activists — there is another billionaire on the block who wants to destroy your gun rights — it’s name is Big Labor.

While none of this information is new to me (and it may not be new to you), you should know that Big Labor spends more than one billion dollars every election cycle to defeat pro-gun candidates for state legislature and Congress.

If a “conspiracy” truly does exist in American politics today, it’s not a “vast right-wing” one, it’s on the left.

You and I are at a very dangerous point in the fight to protect our gun rights.

With at least one Republican Governor (Florida’s Rick Scott) abandoning any pro-gun principles he may have had in regards to “Stand Your Ground,” there is no telling what gun-grab template this “vast left-wing conspiracy” is crafting at the moment.

If that template is successful in a pro-gun state like Florida, it could be coming to a state capitol near you sooner than you think . . .

. . . with billions of dollars to back it up.

It’s imperative that you stay viglante in the fight to defend our gun rights.

I will do everything in my power to keep you alerted.

Please take action if I ask you to do so in the future.

NAGR’s 2012 Executive Summary: New Threats

January 31, 2012

Here is NAGR’s 2012 Executive Summary:

*** Hillary’s UN Gun Ban AND the Obama administration’s Election-Year gun control push:

Hillary Clinton and the United Nations are putting the finishing touches on their “Small Arms Treaty” this summer, and President Obama is ready to push a new “Assault Weapons Ban,” a Magazine Ban and Bloomberg’s “Catch All Gun Control Scheme” in order to win left-wing support.

*** Dozens of CRUCIAL U.S. House and Senate races, with our gun rights hanging in the balance:

Holding the politicians accountable has NEVER been more important.  Not only must we defend true gun rights heroes like Congressman Paul Broun through our Political Action Committee, we also have the opportunity to hold accountable long-standing anti-gun Republicans like Senators Dick Lugar and Orrin Hatch.

*** Leading the fight for REAL Right-to-Carry in states all across the nation:

After passing Constitutional Carry in Wyoming in 2011, NAGR has a tremendous opportunity to move forward with this vital legislation in up to a dozen more states.  If we are successful in raising the resources, this could result in a rout of the gun-grabbers unlike anything seen in decades.

These threats and opportunities are why I’m hoping you will stand strong with your support for the National Association for Gun Rights and our battles ahead.

These threats and opportunities are why I’m hoping you will stand strong with your support for the National Association for Gun Rights and our battles ahead.

Your generous support will help pay for direct mail and online alerts to help turn up the heat on politicians.

And you’ll be paying for our hard-hitting radio, newspaper, internet and TV ad campaigns it will take to make each one of these efforts a resounding success, as well.

Election 2012: Which candidates really believe like those that send them to foggy bottom do?

January 8, 2012

We often see in candidates the populist notion, or action that shows them to be followers of the wind. Bill Clinton being the most famous of those that rule by polls. Polls can, and are twisted by those that put the damned things together. Like statistics, they can always be manipulated to show whatever bias the pollster wishes to convey to further their position. Be that the NRA (full disclosure I am a Life Member.) or NOW.

However, answering questioneres about a subject can provide insights into a candidate. What follows is from an email from a pro gun advocacy group, NAGR, with a link following so that you may join or donate to the cause should you choose to do so.

With the Iowa caucuses just a few days behind us, and with New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada choosing their Republican candidates soon, I wanted to write to you and give you a quick update on the NAGR Presidential Survey program.

As you know, NAGR has mailed every candidate for President an official NAGR Gun Rights Survey.

Ron Paul is the only remaining Republican candidate who has returned his survey 100% in favor of gun rights.

Over the last few weeks and months, I’ve asked you to call the campaigns of Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry to demand that each candidate return their gun rights survey 100% in favor of the Second Amendment.

Believe me, your calls worked. Repesentatives from each of those campaigns called NAGR offices, demanded we instruct our members and supporters to stop calling and to send them a survey.

Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry were hurt severely in Iowa because they stonewalled gun owners by refusing to return their surveys, and I think the longer that Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney ignore gun owners, the more it will hurt them as well.

Each candidate has the NAGR Presidential Survey in hand. However, we didn’t stop the calls, and we won’t. Each of the remaining candidates needs to know that gun owners have a powerful voice and we will assume that silence is a sign that they are hiding an anti-gun position.

I have serious concerns about Romney, Santorum, Gingrich and Perry. It’s their records that worry me.

Let me take a minute or two right now to remind you about the positions of the four Presidential candidates who have so far refused to return their National Association for Gun Rights Presidential Survey.

Mitt Romney:

So far Mitt Romney has refused to respond to his NAGR gun rights survey, perhaps because when Mitt Romney was Governor of ultra-liberal Massachusetts he signed a bill to ban an entire class of firearms.

Would he do the same thing — or even worse — as President of the United States? His record indicates that he would.

Mitt Romney supports the Brady Registration Act, mandatory 5-day waiting periods, mandatory firearms ID cards, the Federal Feinstein Gun Ban (so-called “assault weapons ban”) and he signed the Massachusetts Semi-Auto Ban in 2004.

He even went as far as to say that he supported Massachusetts’ tough anti-gun laws: “We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them… I won’t chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety.”

And to throw fuel on top of Mitt Romney’s anti-gun fire, he received the endorsement of John McCain this week, who himself has recorded promotional commercials for anti-gun groups hell-bent on restricting our Second Amendment rights.

Rick Santorum:

If you’ve watched any of the Presidential debates, you’ve noticed that Rick Santorum claims time and again to be a “fighter” who has “led on conservative issues.”

Rick Santorum’s record on the Second Amendment, however, tells a different story.

In the 90s, he voted to support the Lautenberg Gun Ban, which stripped law-abiding gun owners of their Second Amendment rights for life, simply because they spanked their children or did nothing more than grab a spouses wrist.

He voted for a bill in 1999 disguised as an attempt to increase penalties on drug traffickers with guns… but it also included a provision to require federal background checks at gun shows.

In 2000, Santorum voted to force pawn shops to require a background check on anyone coming into the store to sell a firearm.

And then he voted with gun-controlling Democrats Dianne Fienstein and Frank Lautenberg to mandate locks on handguns in 2005.

But worst of all, Rick Santorum has a storied history of bailing out anti-gun Republicans facing reelection.

Rick Santorum came to anti-gun Arlen Specter’s defense in 2004 when he was down in the polls against pro-gun Republican Pat Toomey. Specter won and continued to push for gun control during his years in the Senate.

He also supported and openly campaigned for anti-gun New Jersey governor, Christine Todd Whitman.

It certainly appears that Rick Santorum has no regrets about his past anti-gun record. Worse, it appears he’d be happy to continue along this path as President.

Newt Gingrich:

For those who have followed Newt Gingrich’s career, the revelation that he talks out of both sides of his mouth won’t be a surprise.

Despite claiming to be pro-gun, Newt Gingrich’s reign as Speaker was downright hostile to our Second Amendment rights.

Newt supports the Brady National Gun Registry, a national biometric thumbprint database for gun purchasers, the Lautenberg Gun Ban and the “Criminal Safezones Act.”

Newt doesn’t think the Brady Instant Gun Registry goes far enough — he wants thumbprints:

“I think we prefer to go to instant check on an immediate basis and try to accelerate implementing instant checks so that you could literally check by thumbprint… Instant check is a much better system than the Brady process.” — June 27, 1997

Gingrich may claim to be pro-gun . . .

But his record indicates otherwise, and his refusal to answer his NAGR survey should give any Second Amendment supporter cause for concern.

Rick Perry:

Texas Governor Rick Perry has received an earful from NAGR members over the past several months for refusing to return his Candidate Survey.

His strategy seems to be to tell gun owners “trust me” while keeping completely silent on what he would do about our gun rights if elected President.

Over the years, gun owners have learned that this is a failed strategy.

George H.W. Bush ran as a pro-gun candidate for President in 1988, but when elected, things changed.

First, he signed an Executive Order banning the importation of so-called “assault weapons.”

Not only that, but it was under President Bush that “Operation Triggerlock,” which dramatically increased funding and power for the BATFE, was implemented.

Of course, as Governor of Texas, Rick Perry did make some minor improvements in state law for gun owners.

It is, however, one thing to act pro-gun as Governor of a state like Texas and quite another to be a pro-gun President of the United States.

Please keep up the pressure on these four Presidential candidates who continue to stonewall gun owners.

Give each campaign a call and demand the candidates return their National Association for Gun Rights Presidential Survey — at once:

Mitt Romney: 857-288-3500

Rick Santorum: 603-518-5199

Newt Gingrich: 678-973-2306

Rick Perry: 855-887-5627

You and I know that we have the most anti-gun President in the history of our country right now in the Oval Office . . .

. . . but perhaps even more dangerous would be a Republican with a proven anti-gun history cutting backroom, anti-gun deals.

National Association for Gun Rights

Does money and praise make an endorsement?

September 8, 2010

Last week the National Rifle Association officially announced they were not endorsing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D – NV).

They also went out of their way to make it clear they were not endorsing Reid’s opponent, Republican Sharon Angle — who filled out the National Association for Gun Rights Federal Candidate Survey 100% pro-gun.  A typical Washington non-statement, statement.

The NRA’s “non-endorsement” statement brings up a number of important questions.

Does giving a candidate money not constitute a more-than-tacit endorsement? The NRA’s Federal PAC gave Harry Reid $4,950 this year, for his 2010 reelection campagin.

Does speaking glowingly of a candidate or politician during an election year not constitute an endorsement? In the June 2010 edition (page 16-18) of the NRA’s magazine, the American Rifleman, they featured an article highlighting the work Harry Reid has done with the NRA.

I firmly believe that actions speak louder than press releases.

In that spirit, our cartoonist outlined just what that the NRA’s “non-endorsement” really means.

Please feel to forward this cartoon to all of your gun owning friends and relatives.
